PHILADELPHIA — A remorseful Michael Vick wants a second chance and vowed to crusade for animal rights with the Philadelphia Eagles – and knows he won't be easily forgiven by fans.

"I know I've done some terrible things, made a horrible mistake. Now I want to be part of the solution and not the problem," Vick said Friday, referring to his conviction for his role in running a dogfighting ring.

Vick was introduced by the Eagles a day after signing a one-year deal for $1.6 million with a team option for a second year for $5.2 million. None of the money is guaranteed, so the Eagles face no financial risk if Vick does not make the team.

Vick, dressed in a gray pinstriped suit, was flanked by Eagles coach Andy Reid and mentor Tony Dungy.

"I really got the sense he wanted to do some great things," Dungy said. "He wanted to be a positive role model for young people. He wanted to get back to his family."

Vick has been out of action since 2006. The former Atlanta Falcons star served 18 months of a 23-month sentence in federal prison.

He also was suspended indefinitely by the NFL.

"For the life of me, I can't understand why I was involved in such pointless activity," Vick said. "Why did I risk so much at the pinnacle of my career?"

The turnout at the Eagles practice facility Friday was the largest in years, with more than 100 media members and nearly two dozen cameras there to hear Vick. Vick spoke softly during the 26-minute news conference, saying he felt remorse even as he was involved in dogfighting.

"There was a point in my life where I felt it was wrong and I knew it was wrong," he said. "To this day I have to live with that shame and that embarrassment."

Vick, who said he wants to be the "best ambassador to the NFL and community," said he hoped to play in a regular season game soon. He asked for a second chance, but expected he won't be easily forgiven by fans or the general public.

The signing drew fire from a local animal rescue group.

Bill Smith, founder of Main Line Animal Rescue in the Philadelphia suburbs, said the group will be renting three billboards near the Eagles' stadium blasting the signing of Vick.

Smith said he was stunned while listening to Vick at the news conference.

"I'm really shocked that he's coming to Philadelphia," Smith said. "He kept talking about second chances. His dogs didn't have a second chance. ... There are a lot of people out there who deserve second chances more than Michael Vick."

The Philadelphia Daily News blasted the decision in headlines for Friday's edition, with a front-page headline blaring "Hide Your Dogs" and "What Are They Thinking?" on the back.

A national group said it would be watching to see whether Vick lives up to his pledge.

Ed Sayres, president of the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, said in a statement that the group "expects Mr. Vick to express remorse for his actions, as well as display more compassion and sound judgment this time around than he did during his previous tenure with the NFL. We hope that Mr. Vick uses his stature for the betterment of the community and the advancement of the issue of animal cruelty."

Vick knows he might never be forgiven by some people.

"I understand to a certain degree, but our country is a country of second chances," he said. "I paid my debt to society. I spent two years in prison. ... That was a humbling experience. I can't explain how deeply hurt and how sorry I was."

Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie said he did serious "soul searching" regarding Vick. The owner said he met with Vick for hours and is convinced he can become a force in stopping animal cruelty.

"I needed to see a lot of self hatred in order to approve this," Lurie said.

But Lurie said if Vick is not proactive in working with the community and the humane society, then his signing will be a "terrible decision."

"There's no third chances and we know that. If it isn't fulfilled the way we expect it to be, then it will be the end," Lurie said.

Commissioner Roger Goodell conditionally lifted Vick's suspension on July 27, allowing him to sign with a team, practice and play in the last two preseason games. Once the season begins, Vick can participate in all team activities except games, and Goodell said he would consider Vick for full reinstatement by Week 6 (Oct. 18-19) at the latest.

"I have said several times in recent weeks that I want Michael to be one of the NFL's success stories as an individual and as a football player," Goodell said. "I believe he can accomplish both goals with the Eagles organization, which has done an outstanding job in the community and on the field these last 15 years under the direction of owner Jeffrey Lurie. I know the Eagles will provide strong support but, ultimately, Michaels success is up to him and the decisions he makes."

The Eagles reached the NFC championship game last season, but are still looking for their elusive first Super Bowl victory.

Vick thanked Reid and Eagles ownership for taking a gamble on him. He also personally thanked McNabb for lobbying the team on his behalf.

"I'm glad that coach Reid and the rest of the organization stepped forward," Vick said. "I'm glad I got the opportunity and the second chance. I won't disappoint."

Asked if some Eagles fans will be angry that the team signed Vick, Reid said, "Not everybody agrees with every decision. I expect the public to have some questions initially."

Reid said he hopes fans will trust that the team did its homework on the 29-year-old Vick and signed him because the team believes the quarterback is a changed man who is ready to return to football.

The Falcons released a statement that said Vick is going "to a first-class organization" and will receive great support from Lurie, Reid, McNabb and team president Joe Banner.

"Michael has been given a good opportunity to restart his career in the NFL, and we wish him well," the statement said.

Vick, who said he has no more pets, said he planned to actively work in the community and the humane society to prove he can help more animals than he's hurt.

Vick will practice with the Eagles on Saturday.

"I'm ready to go," he said.

Reid called Vick "one of the greatest quarterbacks" in the league two years ago. With McNabb firmly entrenched as the starter, Vick will have to look at playing another position.

The most likely scenario would be for the Eagles to use Vick in a variation of the Wildcat offense that the Miami Dolphins made popular last season. Vick also is familiar with the West Coast offense, though he ran a different version with Atlanta than the one Philadelphia uses.

Reid did not specifically address how he would use Vick.

"I will say, though, that he will contribute," Reid said. "You can ask defensive coordinators on other teams if they're worried about that."

For the record, Tony Dungy is anti-gay -- he is hardly the pillar of morality as far as I am concerned -- his being a mentor to a dog-killer means nothing to me.

Can you people just say I DON'T WANT THAT n^&(()) playing football , i want him to suffer like all those other N&*() WHO COMMIT CRIMES in America so he never get a job feed his family and be able to reconstruct his life into something normal. If you animal lovers and opponets of Black Althletes would say that instead of hiding behind dogs then I would respect your racism. But people who aren't honest about their hatred for Black Males don't do that they need a symbol and Vick and Tony Dungy, so America is forgiving society only if you win an Oscar nearly 30 years after raping a 13 y.o. girl in 1978.

your comment is extremely offensive. race has nothing to do with this. you are not doing any good putting vitriol like this out there. i am well aware that ra cism is running rampant these days and has gotten worse since our election of Obama, but race plays no role here.

Offensive in terms of what? Pointing out the racistnimplications in people's statements on here that keeps referring to NFL players as thugs and felons despite the fact that the majority aren't felons. Yeah, race has nothing to do with it. NFL players get fined for show boating or having an "attitude problem" after a touch down and hockey players can knock all of their damn teeth out for fighting. How many nights of baseball where there wasn't a brawl. We love those things though.

I have seen much more racially offensive language by many of you PETA supporters and Micheal Vick opponets than by any defenders of Micheal Vick, all we have said is he did his time and deserves to make a living if a NFL wants him. But since you people are playing the "RACE CARD" topside up by calling the majority of Black Althetes "Thugs", Criminals, Immoral and every other racial slur I think one good race card deserves another.

offensive....try being a native american, african american or latino in this country called amereeka. With your train of thought, race had nothing do do with the way these groups were treated either? your statement claiming Eric's comment is "extremely offensive" offends the Hades out of me. Out of touch. Perhaps a little info on privilege will help you long. plealse visit www.timwise.org

Just so you know, even though I've been against Vick in this thread--the last time I was on HP was to defend our president who I staunchly support from all the Town Hallers coming unhinged.

What happened to this man was sickening. There is a difference between animals and human beings. The US governments non response to Katrina victims is one of the must in humane things ever done in the history of this country. No one went to jail for the imcompetence of Katrina.

And HUD made it damn near impossible for folks to go back to their dwellings which allowed the city to claim those dwellings and use it for there own land redevelopment purposes. People are allowed back into their homes everywhere else in this countries after natural disasters, but nope, not these people who happen to be black and poor.

Yes it does. These animal fanatics are more concerned about the ethical treatment of animals rather than the ethical treatment of human beings. One person said that the dogs need us for survival. True, so if you are not concerned about the human condition, then guess what, the lives of the domesticated animals in this country are going to be harsh. You are going to have more people who are trying to scrape by every day using animals as a source of profit. However rich people do that too.

No one is arguing that there is no difference between humans and animals.

No one is arguing that Katrina was not a tragedy.

What I will argue is that Vick's punishment did not fit the crime.

Tanyars5 and you other Vick apologists -- many of you only support Vick because (a) he is black and "we always got to support our peeps", (b) you are a sports nut with low morals, (c) you don't think much of dogs, or (d) some combination of a, b and c. Before you accuse me of being racist or a morally superior dog-lover, I plead guilty to one of the two charges. I do love dogs -- they are God's creatures, a detail that is lost on many of you unfeeling folks posting here. As a black man, I call it like I see it -- wrong is wrong, regardless of a person's color. As the insensitive crowds cheer on Vick (which you will do, especially if he contributes to Philly winning), I just want you to think about all the dogs that were cruelly killed, maimed and tortured. Does it make you feel good? Does your tired "give him a second chance" mantra erase all that he did? Would you be so supportive if someone hurt one of your family members or friends, went to jail? Yeah, I thought so........

There are differences between humans and animals. Humans are capable of rational thought and premeditated cruelty, animals are not. Humans are able to plan for foreseen disasters and take appropriate self-preserving actions, animals are not. Both Vick and W. should be incarcerated for the rest of their respective lives.

Professional sports people are looked up to by little kids everywhere. What kind of an example does this guy demonstrate? There are some things that you just don't forgive, and putting a thug on a team doesn't help matters at all. He made his choices, so now let him live with the consequences.

That's where parents step in. These players are not perfect just because you sign them to a multimillion dollar contract. That's when your parenting comes in. My role model was my mother and father because they had sense enough to teach me what is right and wrong and the consequences of bad actions using important figures as examples. Not hard to do. Maybe you should pry your children away from the tv more often instead of letting it raise them in your absence. I honestly believe that most children aren't looking at as much news a we adults are, so most of this is mainly our problem. Kids are actually more resilient than adults.

And I guess there is an assumption that no one has learned form Vick's actions. Every black child I've mentored knows not to do what Vick did. One six year old child said this: "Never mess with white people's animals." And that is a lesson that I didn't have to teach. He learned from what this society through the media was telling him, just like a little black girl learns what is more beautiful, and chooses the white doll over the black doll. Children very aware of what is going on.
