Rachel Maddow

MSNBC's Rachel Maddow will make her first appearance on "Meet the Press" Sunday when she joins the panel for a discussion on health care.

Maddow will join former House Majority Leader Rep. Dick Armey (R-TX), Sen. Tom Coburn (R-OK), and former Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle (D-SD) for an in-depth look at the health care debate. Daschle now serves as an informal adviser to the White House, while Armey now runs FreedomWorks, which has been organizing protesters at the health care town halls.

"Joining me for a special hour Sunday on the health care debate is @maddow. I'mlooking foward to it," moderator David Gregory tweeted.

The invitation to "Meet the Press" is a big move for an MSNBC host — Joe Scarborough recently joined Gregory for a discussion on conservatism, but neither Keith Olbermann nor Chris Matthews has ever appeared on the show.

The make-up of this panel is quite telling, but what does it actually say?

Across the political divide you have Daschle and Armaey,
two former legislative leaders facing off from comparatively
similar backgrounds and experiences.

Then you have Tom Coburn, "C" Street Evangelical firebrand
for the dark-side Rethuglicans, presently in Congress facing off
against not his equivalent on the Democratic side, but instead
he is pitted against arguably the wonkiest wonkette in TV today.

Don't get me wrong, I am not being derisive to Rachel;
quite the contrary. Rather What I mean to intone is the lack
of leadership in the Democratic Congress to put the appropriate
Democratic equivalent from their own party on the other side
of the table, to take on Coburn.

Thank God for Rachel.

This would be an entirely different discussion if Rachel was leading the questioning. David is dropping the lines of questioning, and thereby the rebuttals, way too prematurely.

Well I had wondered why they didn't give that show to her in the FIRST PLACE.

I am actually surprised how well Tom Daschle is doing. He left his Casper Milquetoast persona at home. Rachel is doing well also, but they seem to be wedging her out a bit, and I do think she should be a little more forceful in calling bulsh*t on Coburn and Armey.

Between Armey's stuttering, red-faced hubris and angry, childish attempts at 'got'cha' (none too subtly directed right at Rachel), things are looking pretty sad for the Publican't team..go, Rachel, go! ;) ...

Go Rachel.

Now that Rachel provides little if any critical commentary of the barbaric occupation of Iraq and escalation in Afghanistan because she thinks it's OK if Obama kills and maims as opposed to Bush, and now that Rachel maintains a continuous cheerleading section on her show for war with Iran over what may or may not have been a stolen election but virtually ignores the coup in Honduras in which US-trained goons and thugs, with behind-the-scenes assistance from some close to the US government, overthrew a legally elected government with which the US disagreed politically, she has earned the right to appear on Meet the Press.

You OBVIOUSLY are not a regular watcher of Rachel's show, otherwise you would not make the statement you just made. The fact that she may not be making as much of a frontal assault as you may want her to do on the wars, has less to do with what she has stated as her positions in the past, than it has to do with the high profile of the Health-Care debate today.

There are few talking heads in the media today who have been more vociferously opposed the continued efforts in Iraq and Afghanistan, as she has been. Further, she has repeatedly gone where few talkers have gone, relative to the importance of Pakistan, in the overall military equation and also questioning Obama's plans for Afghanistan and questioning it's overall viability and wisdom.

So in short, you're all wet in your evaluation of Dr. Maddow.

And Yes;I am a HUGE fan of hers.

This is a bad move for Gregory. After hearing Rachel, veiwers will be asking themselves, "Why isn't she the host instead of this bozo?"

Rachel appearance on MTP will secure ratings for MTP I am sure. If she was not appearing on MTP, believe me I would not watch. David Gregory does not do his homework, he is so bias and the "gotcha" questions/games is all he plays. Since Tim Russert passed, I stopped watching MTP after one viewing with David Gregory. Really, NBC could do better with Lawrence O'Donnell.

Rachel Maddow just got Armey fired from his board gig that funded his Freedom Group, this is what you call truth to power.

I'm not sure this is such a bad thing for him. He is now free to continue his fearmongering and ly/ng without the constraints of his affiliation to this firm.

When he's done, he'll get another job. Probably right back where he was. It is the way of DC. Big money. Big influence.

I will be watching intently because Rachel will have her say. I remember her debut was as an analyst on DG's Road to the White House.

Rachel is my favorite. Quick thinker, witty, smart and unconventional, because she is not schooled in Washington speak. She is prepared and doesn't let anyone spew their nonsense without just the right amount of push back. And, yet, she is respectful of her guests.

No politician should expect her to be another media wh.or.e, though. They enter at their own peril.

It is why she is going to succeed. Others need to take note. She is setting the tone for the future of tv reporting. Investigative reporting. Real reporting. The way it used to be done by the real pros.

Rachel will do great. Dick will try to tp pull his bad politician self-righteous BS, but I think the one who will be quietest is Coburn. Don't fogret Rachel busted not only Dick and FreedomeWorks, she busted "C-Street" and Coburn is way elevated in the C-Street hierachy. I just want to see of Daschle has the guts to stay on the "Correct" path with Rachel. Otherwise, it is a a very unfair line-up. Rachel has the intellect and research, so it will be hard for those dogs to wag her.

Rachel, I wish you the best - we are rooting for you! Mind over misinformation.

MTP is sinking fast ...so NBC is pulling a fast one....need to get more ratings so adding RM...how lame. Gregory is a p/r/i/ck in capital letters. He is a rethug tool and needs to be fired. he is not a moderator, nor a political analysts....a few weeks ago it was reported that ABC's This Week with George S beat out MTP. This is a ploy - don't fall for it...I love Rachel too but believe it...she won't get to defend Democrats during this time slot...it is a ploy....don't watch..let MTP sink until they get a better host/moderator

Why fire him- just don't watch his lame show. I watch Chris Mathews at 10 and Bob Schieffer at 10:30. I don't watch George Stephanopolous either- with his all republican + 1 token liberal panel. Seriously- how much can any human take of George Will?

About MTP - Rachel is going to be on her own because Tom Daschle works for the health care industry so he is not objective.

****I will tune in to see Rachel Maddow, and THAT is the only reason!****

Maddow has proven to be very well prepared when it comes to interviewing her guests so much so that guests very rarely get away with slipping a falsehood under her radar without her notice.

The fact that she is very respectful and almost never speaks over her guests often disarms them even when they are arware of the fact that she is trying to pry a truth out of them that they are hesiant to reveal. This tactic when it fails to achieve the intended results still manages to undescore the dishonesty/hypocracy of some of these guests.

Even when politley lets them off the hook after a lenghty struggle this same gesture is self eveident.

In short, if she can demonstrate a willingness to continually engage liberals in a like manner ( and this lefty thinks she can) she should be considered as a worthy replacement to David Gregory as she seems to be more Russert-like than Gregory.
