I Like ItI Don’t Like It
Valerie Jarrett

One year ago at the Netroots Nation conference in Austin, Texas the mood of the crowd was one of excitement and elation over the possibility of a Barack Obama presidency.

A year later, with that possibility achieved, a sense of cynicism has begun to creep in. On Saturday morning, one of the president's closest advisers, Valerie Jarrett addressed the Netroots Nation conference in Pittsburgh. And while attendees were largely supportive throughout the question and answer session, the reception was warm at best. The defining moment, in fact, came when Jarrett was hissed and heckled.

Roughly midway through the session, Jarrett was pressed to explain why the President was "continuing so many of [Bush's] policies many of which he criticized as candidate Obama." Knowing the mood and makeup of the audience - largely progressive activists from across the country - she acknowledged off the bat that it was "a fair question." But from there, things grew a bit rough.

Jarrett defended the work Obama has done outlawing torture, and releasing Office of Legal Counsel memos detailing how such interrogation practices came to be. At that point, a protester in the audience screamed out a question about why the White House was trying to keep additional photographs of detainee abuse from becoming public.

"I heard somebody shout out about the pictures," Jarrett replied. "Everybody knows what's in those pictures. And this is where it gets very delicate and I know it is a touchy subject for this audience. But what he is trying to balance as president, is keeping us safe, not giving ammunition to people who already have ample ammunition from what they've seen before to be adverse to us."

More shouts and protests followed. "I can't hear you," Jarrett said. "You know what you've got to do? You've got to figure out a way to get your question on here [pointing to the computer on stage that was receiving emails from questioners]. We are not going to have shout outs from the audience."

The moderator agreed. "This is not a town hall meeting like that," said Baratunde Thurston, of Jack and Jill Politics and The Onion. The crowd got the reference to the boisterous demonstrators at health care town halls. But they didn't stop. From the back of the room, someone shouted a question about why the private security contractor, Blackwater, was still being paid for work overseas.

"Well we are certainly trying to get rid of the no bid contracts," said Jarrett. "He has been very clear about that."

A group of individuals sitting at a table off to the side started hissing. "I hear the frustration and I hear the kind of hissing," said Jarrett. "I hear you. Settle down over there, settle down."

"I'm asking you to trust [the President]," she pleaded. "And I know that's hard. Because I know how pure you are to the cause. But he also has to keep in mind that he has to keep those folks safe."

At that point the protests ended. It was a minor glitch in an otherwise smooth, albeit little news making, a four minute portion of an hour-and-fifteen minute long event. Still, it provided something of a window into the small but mounting frustrations the progressive community has with the president they helped elect.

Ironically, when it came to policy questions, Jarrett hit all the right notes for the audience. On a public option for insurance coverage, which progressives hold near to their hearts, she insisted that it was and remains a philosophical commitment for the president.

"Let me be very clear and I talked to the president yesterday about this, knowing I was coming here," said Jarrett. "The president wants the public option, he has made that clear everywhere he has gone."

On Don't Ask Don't Tell and the Defense of Marriage Act - two places in which the administration has taken some heat from its more liberal backers - Jarrett was firm in saying the White House wanted both laws repealed.

"He believes that DADT is wrong and he attempts to seek repeal in Congress," she said. "He believes the DOMA discriminates."

In fact, the only other place Jarrett got tripped up was when the topic, once again, turned from policy to politics. Asked by Thurston why the administration didn't push back hard against Blue Dog Democrats for not backing the president's health care agenda, Jarrett tried to play diplomat rather than offer the type of aggressive, red meat response that the crowd wanted to hear.

"I know that obviously that hit a note here," she said. "And, I know that there is a lot of frustration here and around the country. I'm telling you, I'm convinced this President has it right... He is not one to punish or do any of the things that perhaps you want to do in a moment of spontaneity or a moment of anger. But he is going to count on you. He is going to count on the American people to put the pressure on their elected representatives because that is the way the system works the best. It doesn't work the best when he decides to punish them from the Oval [Office]."

The crowd clapped softly. "Not quite as much applause [as the question got]," Jarrett said. "But trust me, this will work."

I for one do not doubt Obama's intentions.

What Valerie Jarrett does not seem to understand is that we want HIM to put some pressure on our elected representatives. That's why we elected him.

I hate to say it, but it seems Obama has played us for a bunch of fools. I now don't believe that he ever intended to make most of the changes he so vigorously promised during his campaign. It is irrelevant that he has only been in for 6 months. He is not even trying, and look how his wildest supporters have just faded away-listen to their silence in the wake of the town hall fiascos. They know, whether they can bring themselves to admit it or not. His highest priority is kissing up to conservatives so he can claim to be the great healer-St. George slaying the partisan dragon. In so doing he will squander every opportunity we ever had (and believe me it won't come again anytime soon) for real progressive change. But, then, as I said, he never really cared much about all that anyway. He is much, much more conservative than he portrays himself, but he had to look progressive otherwise the progressive wing of the democratic party would have supported Hillary rather than him. Now, how I regret not doing so myself. After the republicans totally screw him over by not supporting anything he proposes, and he loses his progressive support by continuing to allow himself to be screwed over, he will be toast. That is, unless an aryan nation patriot doesn't get him first.

This gossip rag reporter is making much ado about nothing. Over at DU,

Stein declares:

""The defining moment, in fact, came when Jarrett was hissed and heckled...
I was there, and it was hardly the defining moment. Only a couple of people shouted anything during the 75 minutes she was answering questions, they were largely regarded as freaks and anomalies, she answered the Blackwater queston, and Jarrett said of the scattered booing as she closed, “go ahead and boo if you feel passionate about something, but keep coming to the table.”"

Mr. JA was a political reporter for many years and is a bear about accuracy.
You can take his version to the bank versus Sam Stein's.

And over at the HIll it's become "Obama picks fight with left on health reform"
http://thehill.com/leading-the-news/obama-picks-public-option-fight-with-liberals-2009-08-16.html

Honestly Mr. Stein, you aren't helping the cause for reform. Journalism like this is deserving of a place like E! or Entertainment Weekly, where you can report on the salacious details of all the news that's NOT.
This kind of content is why I come back to huffpo less and less.

So far, Ms. Jarrett, it's been all talk and no action. This is a representative democracy and I worked hard to get Obama elected to do things as president that I can't do as a citizen. A lot of other people did, too. His hand is on the levers and he is doing the Republicans bidding, like he's going to get a thank-you note from them? Who do I have to vote for to end these stupid wars? Who do I have to vote for to bring a jobs program to this country instead of a continuation of Reagan's failed trickle down theories. Wall Street fat cats got fatter under Bush and they are getting fatter under Obama. And now health care reform is going to hand the industry that already has a sweetheart deal and even sweeter package. Trust Obama, you say. Yeah, I could do that. Or I could trust my lying eyes. When is Gitmo really going to close? When are the troops coming home? When are those banks going to lend some of the money the federal government gave them instead of use it to pay truly outrageous bonuses to people who did not earn them?

This is my fear too, though I also believe that the voice of the left must be heard to balance the loud voices of the right.

In general I agree with the aspirations of the left and would love to have them implemented right away - It is frustrating how everything takes so much time. But we should also celebrate as much as possible the victories that this administration accomplishes for us or there will be nothing but negative rhetoric coming from both the left and the right.

Obama is our president, and as he is our best hope in these crazy times, we should promote the positive while reminding him of the direction we want for our country.

I know this is late to the thread - but you'll get a notice! - please share just _some_ of these accomplishments and victories - just a few.

I can't think of a single one.

But I can recite page after page of failures.

Here are just a few: He took Sibelius out from where she was stopping King Coal in its tracks to take a job that should have gone to Dr. Dean - and she's been a failure at it of late while everything he says on the subject is spot on. Meanwhile, while coal was stopped from doing mountain top removal to get at coal, Obama let them resume.

There's this in.sane idea about indefinite detention, so unamerican you can hardly think it could ever happen - detaining people without access to courts, without charge, basically forever? What about habeus corpus?! DISASTER.

Then there's the Tsongas forrest.

Taking single-payer off the table before there's even been any discussion?! That's called capitulation.

...And this is just the beginning of a very long list! Where's just ONE victory?
.

President Obama has been in office less than a year. Please give him more time. It takes time to undo 8 years of the Bush debackle.

Regarding healthhcare The President must govern from the center. He realized that he didn't have the votes to push through a public opposition. Remember he can't do it alone and many of his party members were not backing him on the public oppsition part. So, please give him a break like I say he's only been in Office 7 months.

So thousands may leave the Democratic party if so where are you going to go to the Republicans? Those bunch of racist don't want you.

Please support Obama he's the only answer.

The problem is Obama does not get any of his activist support from the center. If he keeps going there, he has to find his own activists there. It is a political reality. The more he goes there, the more will drop from the base for letting them down. Obama is giving blood to vampires.

I have worked for HR 676, I have settled for a strong public option... Dean draws the line there, he is credible when he states co-ops won't work.

It does not take time. It takes prosecutions.
And I believe you mean "public option" when you write "public opposition."
Based on your spelling and grammar, I suspect you may be a Republican troll.

no I will not support Obama, I will support a Party and candidate that supports and advances my views and agenda for a better progressive America.

Obama doesn't have the leadership, cojones and backbone to command and control the narrative, the WH and the Congressional Democratic caucuses.

we need a new Party for the 2012 elections.

Everyone knows that. Everyone also knows that a new administration sets its own tone out of the gate, and (for the most part) is thereafter limited by that for its whole term. An administration does have to move deliberately, and consistently, but it has to MOVE. It can't wake up next year and decide to start doing the right thing on issues that it ignored this year. That would (correctly) be attacked as lack of consistency in governance, and make the right goals harder to achieve.

We keep hearing that the ship of state turns slowly. President Obama hasn't turned the wheel by a single degree on many important issues. That limits his ability to turn the ship downstream.

We all know that it will take a long time to correct the excesses of the last eight years, but if the president doesn't even try, it will take forever.

If he knew that the votes weren't there, then he should not have raised the issue. As it stands, he may do more harm than good. I'm tired of hearing about him being in office just for a short time. With the challenges he has confronted came unprecedented opportunities to enact real and lasting change, and he has squandered every one.

Obama never signed on to the complete laundry list of "correct" positions
developed in the progressive community. Like it or not there is a diversity of opinions
among the American people, they are represented in the government at all levels, and
Obama promised to ride a middle course. He's not gonna be comfortable pushing security/war
policies radically different from the pre-existing practices.

My feelings re Pres Obama and his agenda. 1. I support him/agenda 2. it is very sad to watch people that said they voted for him, but within this short span have been at the ever-ready to severely withdraw that support because he has not curve toward their reasons for voting for him ( support vs voting)? Many are sounding a high pitched alarm and going on the cable networks to add to the noise of the media personalities whose only interest is to keep their jobs in the media. I think everyone who really support him and his agenda should find more creative ways of bring attention to their views, and not chance your stripes when the going gets tough. I am trying really hard personally not to let all the crappy stuff in, because that is not good, right now he needs his true supporters more than ever. There is a lot of distractions being thrown about, (racial provocations are very heavily in the mix, as are class wedges, pure hatred , etc.) many distrust him for just being an intelligent speaker, just because of his calm . Some say stay off the networks others feel he needs to talk more. Imagine what miracles are expected of him ,period. I like Hillary's statement when she said if he walked on water, some would respond " he can't swim" My prayers are with the Pres. and his family, there is life after the White House

Jarrett must have been taken by surprise. Truth is for the last 6 months progressives have watched patiently as Obama has compromised on key issues like the public option. He and his justice department have steadfastly refused prosecute anyone for the use of torture or the release of those pictures that depict torture. His record on DADT is not stellar to say the least.

Oh yeah. That will set the crazies off. Do you have any idea how many of those asshats in Congress & the Senate are getting kickbacks and consulting fees for special contractors over in Iraq. They'd shoot the President down in the hallway for that. Prosecuting them? Nope. That is for the global community to do. This is how it could work and the American public can still save face. If we allow the global community to exact their justice then the rest of the world will see we're trying to work with them. The sad part about it is the only people they will get will be Cheney, Rove & McCain. See what happens when you're all over the media claiming you approved "enhanced interrogation" techniques. They can dress it up anyway they want, it's still torture and since a female General and a few lower enlisted soldiers fell on their sword for the cause, our former leaders should too. But, they can't touch Bush because he wrote himself a "get out of jail free" clause in the Patriot Act. Nixon all over again.

Remember, the President can only do so much. He's not like Bush telling you he's going to do what he wants to do and damn the Senate & Congress. He's trying to get them to meet and work for the betterment of us all, not just themselves.
