Walmart, CVS, Best Buy, GMAC Among 8 Major Companies To Pull Ads From Glenn Beck Show

Huffington Post   First Posted: 9/17/09 Updated: 5/25/11

Walmart, Best Buy, CVS, and GMAC are among eight major advertisers that have confirmed pulling their advertising from Fox News' "Glenn Beck" program in light of his comments that President Obama is a racist.

The advertisers did not pull their spots from Fox News, but rather requested that their ads do not air during Beck's 5PM program.

The advertisers in the latest round of pull-out from Beck's show and their statements to ColorOfChange.org:

  • Allergan (maker of Restasis): "We reviewed our commercial schedule, and based on your feedback, we've put any programming featuring Glenn Beck on our "do not air" list. This means that you will no longer see any Restasis ads during programming featuring Glenn Beck. Thanks again for bringing this to our attention."
  • Ally Bank (a unit of GMAC Financial Services): "Ally advertises on a broad spectrum of programs to reach our potential customers. Our advertising is not an endorsement of editorial content on any program. We have ceased to advertise on the Glenn Beck program."
  • Best Buy
  • Broadview Security: "Given the considerations, we have requested of Fox News not to include us in the rotation that would have our commercials running on Glenn Beck's show."
  • CVS: "While advertising on Fox is part of our communication plan, we had not requested time on Glenn Beck's show specifically. We have instructed our advertising agency to inform Fox to ensure Glenn Beck's program is not part of our advertising plan."
  • Re-Bath: "...We are no longer airing our commercials on the Glenn Beck Show..."
  • Travelocity: "We did not specifically place our ad on the show. We buy ads in bulk and then they are placed somewhat randomly. However, we have now specifically asked that our ads do not appear during this show."
  • Wal-Mart: "Walmart today confirmed the retailer pulled ads from the Glenn Beck show on August 3rd,"

These companies join a growing list of advertisers to pull their ads from Beck's show, including ConAgra, GEICO, Lawyers.com, Men's Wearhouse, Procter & Gamble, Progressive Insurance, RadioShack, Roche, SC Johnson, Sanofi-Aventis, Sargento, and State Farm Insurance.

I saw The Scooter Store is still on Beck today. It is also in my hometown and they had a bomb scare Wednesday.

AP reporter David Bauder reported that "33 Fox advertisers", and he includes WalMart and Clorox "directed that their commercials not air on Beck's show". In an email to DefendGlenn, Bauder claims he "spoke to several of the companies", yet if he had contacted ALL of them, as have we, he would have discovered that all but 11 have DENIED the claims of Color of Change, including WalMart, Clorox, Best Buy, and SC Johnson.

Bauder, laughably, even quotes CoC Executive Director James Rucker as calling Glenn Beck Fox's "toxic asset". This is the same group who echoed Kanye West's disgusting statement after Katrina that President Bush "gave troops permission to go down (to New Orleans) to shoot" Black people. Rucker started selling t-shirts 2 days later on ColorofChange.org's website which read "Kanye was Right". Who is the race-baiting "toxic" party here? If a right-leaning group had associated itself with such repulsive hate-speech, it would long ago have been dismissed as a racist hate group. Yet Bauder uses Rucker as his SOLE source on this so-called boycott. Incredible.

Bauder is now on vacation, "until Aug. 31" we are told, which might explain why the piece was rushed to web without the rigorous sourcing one would expect from a professional "journalist".

Why is it so hard for liberals to stick to the facts?

The one who compromises is the one who wants his goal as much as the next person and is ready to give up something to get it. A real non-compromiser is the one who changes the rules in the middle of the game. The one that calls cheater when he knows he's losing fairly. The one that calls names to distract his opponent. The cheater! If I lose in something I will say good job to my competitor and work harder for my next competition. Who's cheating today? All is not fair in love and war. Not when we lose our mores, laws, inhibitions, decency and even our humanity.

What I don't believe in is cheating. We as a country are brought up to recognize it and demonize it. It's not right to loosen the bolts on your competitors bike so you have a better chance. It's not "American" to stack the odds in your favor, attempt to change the outcome and steal someone's chance at their pursuit of happiness. I don't believe in steroids. I don't believe in insider trading. I don't believe in racism, yes racism is cheating. Call it what you will, but cheating, and we all know what it smells like, is still cheating. And this is what the right wing conservatives are planning, doing and accomplishing. They are stacking the deck in their favor. Going beyond what we all consider fair competition and using any and all tactics to further their goals. Yes, because they will lose power or money or both. I'm sure I will be called a sore loser, but I'm not losing, I will be called a cry baby, but I'm not crying. I will certainly be called a sissy, but I will compete in any fair fight, only an idiot would fight for a lost cause, a really lost cause. (e.g. If I said that drunk driving is OK) I will be called the uncompromising one, but the person who compromises is always the one who knows he will lose.

This competitive nature is just that, our nature. Good and good. How do we do that? Do we set up a set of laws and rules and enforce these rules so we all have an equal chance to reach our potential. Doesn't is sound good to say, "Ok boy lets see what you got", or "give it your best shot". Isn't this how we all have a chance to do our best and shine and feel proud?Sure isn't that the best way. In fact it is the best way and I think it is what our founding fathers were thinking about when they guided us to this path. I respect that and welcome the challenge as most of us would.

The more they do and the less they are reprimanded or denounced or even disciplined, the more they will do the next time. Human nature. Starts when you're a child and never goes away. And in some cultures encouraged. America is one of those. Actually most democracies have this credo as well as most socialist nations. There is a certain freedom in knowing we have this capacity under the law. Some people take it to the extreme, like taking a gun to a political rally, really beyond the norm. But the majority know where to draw the line and most of us respect that line. This would work great in a perfect society but we are, sometimes to our detriment, only human. It's human nature for each of us to puzzle our way out of our cages, to be the best that we can be, for each of us to be true to ourselves and stand up for what we believe.

We all do the same thing. Unfortunately, there are people who will still refuse to recognize the change as a good alternative. And invariably, these persons ultimately have a personal stake in their refusal. Maybe the person is the one that came up with the previous policy and feels slighted, but more than likely you find that the change will either cause a reduction in power for the dissident of even more likely a reduction in financial return. What do these people do? If they are a single individual they will probably just complain and if no one responds, will suck it up or leave. If there are more than one individual, they will seek each other out and voice their dissatisfaction. Yet again, such a normal response to a perceived slight or demotion. I would do the same. But, If there are enough like minded people they will get louder, the will start to feed off of each other's emotions. They will start to act out unconsciously to see what they can get away with.

This all sounds like a conspiracy and I know it's not but it only takes an innocent suggestion like, "Darn it, If only there were more people like me on the school board I could accomplish more things for my children or have more influence on what is taught". "Yeah, you should run for a position on the school board and stand up for what we believe in". Innocent isn't it? Innocent and normal, we would all do the same thing. The only problem is when a large majority believes one way it's much easier for them to disregard others' views. Most of us have probably seen this action at work. On the job, where everyone is use to doing something one way and to get them to change takes a boss's decree. Thus, the birth of employee suggestion boxes. Again, innocent and normal.

They are quite intelligent and have an agenda completely unlike ours. I have always given them the benefit of the doubt, but the attack on Obama was the final clincher for me. For the first time they are afraid and look what they are doing. Going on the frontal attack with all kinds of stupid, and from all sides, instead of picking at the fringe. I'm literally watching a verbal stoning. And because of this, for the first time since I can remember I have hope. Let's not get overconfident and loosen our fragile grasp for a better future. I want to believe that people who believe Glenn Beck are a minority but I don't know. I really don't know. And I never will.

I am a democrat and believe that the right wing conservatives are all selfish and greedy jerks. But we cannot begin to underestimate them. They have populated the media, schools, law firms, courts and political stations. They have subsumed insurance companies and energy production. They are eating away at our military and have contracted mercenaries protecting our diplomats and statesmen. They have a hold on our CIA and probably our FBI. They certainly control the NSA. Have I missed anything? Could they have accomplished all of this without being strategists?

Fedupwithgovernment: I agree. FOX is the only company not to wallow in Obamamania before the election, & to do any factual presentation of his background with leftist groups. BHO was a lawyer for ACORN: Fact! That ought to give some insight. As a Kent State U grad from the 60s, I tell you that SDS & Weathermen are terrorist organizations. IMO, ACORN is soft terror ; Same with Black Panthers & Farrakhan's group. There is a longtime, concerted effort from former communists to take-over & radically change the type of govt. in USA... for looters, criminals, gangsters, black nationalists, etc. Maybe SOME liberals are unaware of it, or some members, but they are the same radicals from the 60s. I like America the way it is, its culture of independence, its values of self-reliance, its history of world defense & generosity. These virtues are twisted into vices by the communists who want control for themselves; they want to steal it from those who have it, the US taxpayer-citizens, to distribute to those they consider "worthy" due to perceived "social injustice". Ha! My family has been in the USA for only 2 generations. We have educated ourselves, worked & saved & have prospered. Many others continue to do this nowadays. There is no excuse for others who make unwise lifestyle choices & who deserve their individual consequences of those choices. Those people are not VICTIMS of the rest of us & I'm tired of hearing they are & we all should

When are you sheep going to wake up and understand that the global elite use these shills on television to create racial conflicts. Obama and Bush are cousins and are two wings of the same bird. Mr. Van Jones why don't you speak out against our own govt. who injected african americans with syphillus in the Tuskegee experiment? Why don't you talk about Dr. Boyd Graves who has documents to prove that the AIDS virus was engineered for population control in the African american population? Mr. Jones, cut your ties from the New World Order.
