Kyrgyzstan Presidential Election

nytimes.com:

KOSH-KORGON, Kyrgyzstan " The three men were locals who were said to have once crossed into nearby Afghanistan to wage war alongside the Taliban. They then returned, militant wayfarers apparently bent on inciting an Afghan-style insurgency in this tinderbox of a valley in Central Asia. By late June, they were holed up in a house here, stockpiling Kalashnikov rifles and watching pirated DVDs of martial arts movies.

If people were honest and would admit they didn't know if there was a supreme being or not, this could be a productive and interesting line of thought. But as long as people claim to things they obviously do not we will have these situations.

What do you expect - you push, they push! Over nine years of pushing has resulted in stalemate. The energy spent to "fix" these issues can't always be kinetic.

I meet a couple of Iraqi's here in the U.S. and they are glad those nut cases are getting their rear kicked one said they try to rule with hate and fear everywhere they go.

That had a familiar ring to it here at home.

Please stop linking to the NYT until they remove the requirement for logging in to read their content.

It is very annoying to click a story and find their login page instead of information.

From what I've understood there is no separation of church and state in Islam. So naturally it will create trouble.

Any system of belief, no matter how inherently well-intentioned -- can be used to control and exploit people. And that includes "godless" communism.

Trouble seems to require that a certain percentage of the population consider the government corrupt before the fundamentalists are able to gain any traction.

The governments ARE corrupt and the resulting poverty, desperation, and ignorance of the public makes the message offered by the fundies that much more credible.

At that point all you need is a precipitating event. In this case, the government shooting hundreds of protesters.

I'm not sure that Islam has anything to do with it. Seems to me it could be any religion, and almost any corrupt government.

"Methinks the West should try a different approach."
And the Muslims East, the Muslim East, should YOU take different approach to combat the very members of your societies engaged in global Jihads ?!
No? Easier to blame everything on the so called West, habib.

Interesting how one reads about these stories and how M...u....sl...!ims seem to dominate them everywhere: nigeria, kenya, somalia, egypt, south thailand, south Philippines, indonesia, middle east, iran, afghanistan, pakistan, india, europe etc.

Hmm, is it us who misunderstand them or is it them; violent backward fanatics. *rolls eyes*

Just keep on repeating. The West is to blame. This is way one doesn't have to actively engage with the internal issues bedeviling Islamic societies. Additional benefit: One can pay zakat to support various Jihadis against the "evil" West with easy conscience.. Even while living in the West and enjoying its benefits, mind you.

Hmmm. You missed a few places! And Middle East covers Egypt and Iran already.

There's no need for understanding. There would be no misunderstanding if you were not over there, eh? *rolls eyes back*

Islamic fanaticism is nothing new. No we should not have invaded, but most of the violence in Iraq was Muslim on Muslim. {Which is why we should not have invaded, it's people settling centuries old grudges.}

Well, most people are not willing to say things that gets them called bigoted and prejudiced. Even if all they are doing is putting 2 and 2 together. Eventually people will understand that all that the situation will not change no matter how many times we bow and extend our arms to them. Hopefully it will not be too late.

It is strange that we live in a Western world where simply pointing out the obvious and calling things by the name and way they are is seen as bigoted and prejudiced.
