The most obvious question surrounding the Obamas' vacation in Martha's Vineyard is what will Michelle Obama wear? Should she step into the island's preppy fashion tradition? Will she don the ubiquitous Lilly Pulitzer prints? Plum TV's Guinevere Cramer gathers ideas from the island's boutique owners. Tell us what you think of them below in comments.

Pundit in my own mind

I like the idea that she obviously dresses for herself. The Martha's crowd all look the same with all the pink, green and navy stuff. So boring. Just because you own a boutique there, doesn't mean you have the flair to dress someone else.

Exactly.

.....mmmm, those plaid shorts ? Is madras "back" ? OMG but such had its practicalities......way back when/then.....LOL !!!

hmm. i live in Washington, DC, i'm professional and black and (sorry to say) have to agree w/ many of these comments. even trailblazers know that the best way to blaze a trail is to have your audience focus on your ideas, accomplishments and not your clothes. that said, in this town, the best way to reach said goal is to dress to blend in. classy doesn't have to mean dowdy.

Preppy look is so boring and dated. You see rich older women in those horrible outfits thinking they look spiffy and it looks bad. Get rid of the preppy look for good.

Michelle Obama is tall and statuesque and has a beautiful mature figure. She is brainy, composed and an excellent First Lady. The only objection I have as far as her clothing style is that she has been seen wearing cardigans that are too tight for her and then puts a belt around the outside of the cardigan, under her bustline. It looks tacky and too much like what a teenager would wear. It would be helpful for her to learn that there are occasions when you dress up and occasions when you dress down. She appears to know when to dress down (looked great sightseeing in Yellowstone) but made a fashion error when she failed to dress up to meet the Queen of England, by wearing aforementioned overly casual cardigan. For this she may need a clothes stylist.

Sorry, but Michelle baby, you need a fashion consultant badly!

Mudea would be perfect!

I am a staunch Democrat and admire the Frist Family, but I agree she needs a fashion consultant.
There is definitely something missing in her choice of clothes. I believe her Paris visit was a complete fashion disaster. When you compare her to the other First Ladies around the globe I believe she is the worst dressed of them all!!!!!!!
Can we all stop defending her clothes sense, and tell her the truth: that your fashion sense is terrible. These people in Martha's Vineyard is just trying to make her feel good. I love Michelle, but she does not dress like a first lady. And don't call me a hater because I am a staunch Democrat and wants them to succeed in all manner of ways.

constance, speak for yourself she is not compared with other first ladies this a new day "hello" he campaigned on change an that includes michelle she is not dressing according to your style she is quite comfy in her own skin also we are in a recession and this is called stimulating the economy in other words you have those who are going into the stores to purchase what is affordable. with that is a win win on all sides have you been to a mall lately, have you noticed the lack of shopper traffic cash registers are very quiet ,hopefully this will motivate some i would think even stevie wonder could see this for what it is.

The boutique owners are just trying to get their few minutes of fame in because the Obamas are coming to town. They're looking for a little PR for their businesses. That's about it, or at least that's what I got out of watching the video.

I think this is what will happen: Michelle will listen with great interest and make very intelligent, insightful, and enthusiastic comments about your ideas, then go off and follow her own ideas about what to wear, because, after all, this is not the end of the world.

First it Lilly Pulitzer whose clothes costs an arm and a leg for regular folks...
07:08 PM on 08/19/2009
And Lilli has been recycling the same fashion for years and years. they look a lot like the clothes I saw there in 1973.
12:38 AM on 08/20/2009
and are UGLY to boot...
05:24 PM on 08/18/2009
Excuse me Martha's Vineyard, I think you can all take styling advice from the First Lady rather than give it to her. What nerve. Our First Lady dresses just fine thank you.
01:31 PM on 08/19/2009
In my view, she is the world's worst dressed First Lady. Be real, check out the other First Ladies -- even of the poorest countries!!! Michelle needs some style education on what to and not to wear as First Lady. I am a Democrat!
02:34 PM on 08/19/2009
"style education"? Poor choice of words...thus you are hardly the one to criticize Mrs. Obama...don't like it...don't look...easy!
03:57 PM on 08/18/2009
I don't think in all my years I've seen so much information published about the 1st Lady's dress code. Is it that people are trying to make her into something she's NOT? Michelle is a striking woman, but she's certainly not the best informed 1st Lady we've had about what is appropriate dress.
05:20 PM on 08/18/2009
What?!
05:27 PM on 08/18/2009
Mrs. Obama dresses stunningly and according to her body shape. She is not a flat chested skinny no curve blonde.

I love Lilly Pulitzer: nice, bright colors that are flattering on every complexion. LP is really the easiest thing to wear if you have a few shells and cardis, pants, skirts, and shorts. A little goes a long way.

The downside is that people will assume you're conservative.

Having said that, I hope MO will bring a little "change" to MV. She should wear what she likes.
05:39 PM on 08/18/2009
Having been on the "vineyard" for many years I can only say, I am happy Mrs. Obama does not pay attention to the "style" pundits that would like to control the way she dresses. It's funny but I never heard anyone suggest that Laura Bush loose a few pound and ditch the glitter pastel lipstick nor did they suggest to Barbara Bush that she have a neck lift and put some color in her hair.

Nothing like having a "girl" in the White House to "handle." It's more than 100 days, she aint gonna change for yah, she's a proud black American woman. Leave her the he ll alone!!!
09:36 PM on 08/18/2009
MSM and pundits always like to give Repugs and their wives the benefit of the doubt. If she's well dressed, she's considered "elegant." If she's casual, she's considered "all -American and unpretentious. "

But God forbid a Dem should be stylish! Then she's clueless and vapid. And God forbid a Dem not be fashion conscious. Then she's a slob.

She already does colors and patterns perfectly. I'm sure she'll be totally appropriate and stay true to her personal style. She does need to find a new casual hair style....that top knot is okaaaaay....
05:58 PM on 08/18/2009
don't you just love it when she and Sasha rock that knot? makes me giggle everytime I see them.
