New Jobless Claims Rise Unexpectedly To 576K

WASHINGTON -- The number of first-time claims for unemployment benefits rose unexpectedly for the second straight week, a sign that jobs remain scarce even as other data show the economy is stabilizing.

The Labor Department said Thursday the number of new jobless claims rose to a seasonally adjusted 576,000 last week, from a revised figure of 561,000. Wall Street economists expected a drop to 550,000, according to a survey by Thomson Reuters.

Economists closely watch initial claims, which are considered a gauge of layoffs and an indication of companies' willingness to hire new workers.

The figures are volatile, and had been trending down, after remaining above 600,000 for most of this year. The new report indicates that the labor market is still weak. In a healthy economy, initial claims are usually around 325,000 or below.

The four-week average of initial claims, which smooths out fluctuations, rose for the second straight week to 570,000.

The number of people remaining on the benefit rolls dropped by 2,000 to 6.24 million. Analysts had expected a slight decline. The continuing claims figures lag initial claims by a week.

When federal emergency programs are included, the total number of jobless benefit recipients was 9.18 million in the week that ended Aug. 1, the most recent data available. That was down from 9.25 million in the previous week. Congress has added up to 53 extra weeks of benefits on top of the 26 typically provided by the states.

The large number of people remaining on the rolls is an indication that unemployed workers are having a hard time finding new jobs.

Still, layoffs have slowed recently. The department said earlier this month that companies cut 247,000 jobs in July, a large amount but still the smallest number in almost a year.

The unemployment rate dipped to 9.4 percent in July from 9.5 percent, its first drop in 15 months. But many private economists and the Federal Reserve think the rates could top 10 percent by next year.

The recession, which began in December 2007 and is the longest since World War II, has eliminated a net total of 6.7 million jobs.

More job cuts were announced this week. Bethesda, Md.-based defense contractor Lockheed Martin Corp. said it will eliminate about 800 jobs in its space systems division, and San Francisco-based video and audio conferencing company Polycom Inc. said it will cut 3 percent of its 2,600 person work force.

Among the states, Tennessee had the largest increase in claims with 2,525 for the week ended Aug. 8, which it attributed to more layoffs in the transportation equipment, industrial machinery, and rubber and plastics industries. The next largest increases were in North Carolina, Wisconsin, Georgia and Washington.

California reported the largest drop in claims of 5,635, which it attributed to fewer layoffs in the construction, trade and service industries. Michigan, Ohio, Kentucky and Delaware had the next largest decreases.

I want , and what we should all demand is to put a FREEZE on work visas!!!!! The alphabet soup of work visas. I wounder how many employers have taken advantage of the downturn in the economy and when they get ready to hire I wonder how many jobs will be filled by non Americans. I myself am a Naturalized Citizen of this country and arrived as a child in 1962. I have always felt part of this Great Nation and cannot beleive what is happening! We are in a sinking ship and we cannot take any more on board.

Yes, work visas are another way for the rich to squeeze down salaries for those of us who actually work.

The reported 0.1% decline in the unemployment rate in July while 247,000 jobs were being lost was due to a statistical assessment that 1,000,000 Americans left the workforce between May and August. Had these workers remained in the workforce (or not removed by the BLS accountants) the unemployment rate would have been 10% in July. Also, this ignores the average increase of 125,000 people per month that is a natural demographic. If you sometimes think things are actually worse than they say you’re right!

The U6 (The unemploment series used up until the1990's) is somewhere around 16%.

Shadowstats is calculating the real unemploment rate to around 21%.

There is nothing unexpected about this news. I understand that it is healthy to look for some positive signs with the economy but it looks like the economy is still in a downfall. Nothing seems to have really changed and I am not sure what will change this downward spiral.

What I find interesting is how hard it was to find this story on Huffingtonpost. I suppose it is not very newsworthy anymore.

"The Venus Project is a veritable blue-print for the genesis of a new world civilization, one that is based on human concern and environmental reclamation.

The plans for The Venus Project offer society a broader spectrum of choices based on the scientific possibilities directed toward a new era of peace and sustainability for all. Through the implementation of a resource-based economy, and a multitude of innovative and environmentally friendly technologies directly applied to the social system, The Venus Project proposals will dramatically reduce crime, poverty, hunger, homelessness, and many other pressing problems that are common throughout the world today.

One of the cornerstones of the organization's findings is the fact that many of the dysfunctional behaviors of today's society stem directly from the dehumanizing environment of a monetary system. In addition, automation has resulted in the technological replacement of human labor by machines and eventually most people will not have the purchasing power to buy the goods and services turned out.

The Venus Project proposes a social system in which automation and technology would be intelligently integrated into an overall social design where the primary function would be to maximize the quality of life rather than profits. This project also introduces a set of workable and practical values.

I hear you, something. It's starting to get out of hand. 2 social classes and 2 set of rules. Middle class is fading away.

It warms my heart to read authentic intelligent understanding of what's going on around me (us). Finally a few truly understand.

Corporate America now owns ALL of the message American hear day to day. And they ensure the message is a lie that benefits them. The elite with bank accounts offshore. Not the employees. The slaves. The little people.

Thank you WeMustSpeakOut and flamenfiddle.

Slavery was never abolished, it was just more equally distributed! Indeed we are slaves to our government and our businesses.

Workplace suicides surged 28 percent last year, the Labor Department said Thursday, as experts said anxious workers watched colleagues depart in a rash of layoffs and dealt with survivor's guilt.

"Unexpected," to the liars in the MSM, Wall Street, and Captiol Hill who keep telling the American people every other week that "the recession is over" only to have to cover up their ignorance with double-speak when "unexpected" numbers pop up and evaporate their Kool-Aid.

Third "unexpected" story of the week.

Is this nation's business analysts consistent or what!!
12:21 PM on 08/20/2009
But of course, the recession is over. Bad is the new good!

Obama has already failed his presidency. I just don't see an FDR or Truman who demanded change and rolled up the sleeves instead of strolling on the beach. Working Americans are struggling each and every day while this president wants to negotiate. I am tired of it. It just seems he is a straw man for the financial crime syndicate.

Not unexpected by me...this is just the beginning...

For 60% of America at least this will be a long deep depression...!

unexpectedly? On what planet do these people live?

... most of the time.

There is nothing unexpected about this. Companies have to look forward on whether to invest in their business and the business environment looks hostile especially with the likes of Congress looking for more tax revenue by any means necessary and doing congressional witch hunts into business. Also regulations.

No sense investing in your business with friends like this and if they need some work done they will hire independent contractors to fill the void not long term employees.

The real headlineshould read. "Unemployment claims increased as expected"

Why was it a surprise, the people in the "real" world know they and their neighbors are hurting, there seems to be no reprise in sight. Cost of living is rising while salaries are in free-fall, if you are lucky enough to keep your job. We now earn what we did 10 years ago, yep, that's going to make us start spending!

You are correct, pay cuts, bonuses halted, pay increases halted....cost of living on the rise! And yes, that is for the fortunate ones to retain their job, save for Wall Street and the Banks. On a bright note, they being Wall Street and the Banks seem to be fairing very well! Imagine that, those that created this mess are the first to receive government assistance and the first to see an end in sight! What a joke!
