Washington Post:

The Obama administration has secured commitments from nearly a dozen countries willing to accept detainees from Guantanamo Bay and is increasingly confident about its ability to transfer a large majority of the prisoners who have been cleared for release, according to U.S. and foreign officials.

Unfortunately it won't. Because people would rather see a negative headline for them to jump on the Obama bashing bandwagon.

Gee, its so hard to prosecute your paid-for prisoners, even when you go so far as to torture other men to give false evidence against the poor souls you bought for $5000 apiece...even when you go so far as to bribe others to lie against your paid-for prisoners. Can't a brute get a break?
Oh, and there is that other little snag, dang...you can't use evidence obtained by torture...oh woe is the plight of the propagandist machine against "the worst of the worst" who turned out to be poor sheep herders and innocents who've had to be let go because they were INNOCENT.
Bush/Cheney owe these men, big time.

When did he say he would get us out of Afghanistan ? I only heard him say Iraq, but we would send more troops to Afghanistan -understandably.

closing Gitmo is a good first step.

next, I want to see diplomatic relations with Cuba reestablished and Guantanamo repatriated.

I have never understood the problem with gitmo. I you are going to hold prisoners does it really matter where?

the big problem is that it's located on the island of Cuba. if we're going to hold prisoners, I believe *we* should them. we have plenty other places, which should have been used in the first place, except it wouldn't have been able to hide them there like Cheney did.

the second problem is the way it was used with these prisoners: it was a de facto limbo, with no charges, no trials, no redress... basically, we used it as a *kennel*. for *humans*.

the third problem is we shouldn't be still there. we're operating under a treaty from 1934, which supplanted one following the Spanish-American war - and both of them virtually say we're allowed to intervene in Cuba whenever we want, for whatever reason. Cuba doesn't recognize it - and why should they??? so it's an embarrassing vestige of US imperialism.

Gitmo is still open? I thought the media noted Obama closed in on day 1?
Will we still be reading this same story a year from now?

I think gitmo was an island paradise compared to what they deserved. Send em back to their home countries to be tortured.

Where is the progress on prosecuting war criminals like Nancy Pelosi who FUNDED the torture??? OR the CIA who lied to congress. On or the other. I want someone in Jail... preferably Nancy.

Why do you think the Administration isn't prosecuting the war criminals??? If the CIA lied to Congress, {which is a serious crime} why aren't they prosecuting the CIA agents???

Nancy & Congress is MORE culpable in this than Bush, Cheney or the CIA agents who actually did the torture. Nancy & Congress FUNDED the torture. There wouldn't BE any torture if Congress did not fund it.

I am not spewing hate, I am spewing the truth.

Yet Morning Joe spent some time this morning equating the conduct of the right-wing fomenters of violence and lies with that of those who point out the dangers to the republic of such conduct, thus perpetuating the popular journalistic myth that every issue has two (and only two) equally valid arguments, and encouraging an ignorant "a pox on both their houses" cynicism in those (like Joe) too feeble-minded to make analytical distinctions.

Some journalists have gone to the trouble of researching the affiliations of those showing up where the President is speaking, and make no mistake about it -- they are dangerous people. They belong to hate-groups and bizarre right-wing "militias" of the sort Tim McVeigh was associated with. Tolerating the open display of guns in the vicinity of a presidential appearance is INSANE.

Good article. Just the facts. Glad to hear progress is being made with other countries. Let's get some prosecutions under way. Certainly the Obama Administration can do better than just the (3) prosecutions it took the Bush Administration nearly (6) years to handle. That was ridiculous.
