Obama

President Barack Obama guaranteed on Thursday that health care reform will be achieved, and he stuck by the public option as his preferred choice for revamping the insurance market.

In an interview with Philadelphia-based radio talk show host and MSNBC analyst Michael Smerconish, Obama continued to talk about his desire to bring Republican lawmakers on board. He also chastised, ever so slightly, the press and progressives for getting "a little excited" in their suspicions that he was abandoning the public plan. "Our position hasn't changed," he said.

Obama's most powerful moment, however, may have come when he addressed a caller who had supported his 2008 campaign but was concerned that the president's knees were "buckling" when it came to getting health care reform passed.

"I guarantee you," he told the caller, "we are going to get health care reform done. And I know that there are a lot of people out there who have been hand wringing and folks in the press are following every little twist and turn of the legislative process. You know, passing a big bill like this is always messy. FDR was called a socialist when he passed Social Security. JFK and Lyndon Johnson, they were both accused of a government takeover of health care, when they passed Medicare. This is the process we go through because understandably, the American people have a long tradition of being suspicious of government, until the government actually does something that helps them, and then they don't want anybody messing with whatever gets set up. And I'm confident we're going to get it done."

Obama and his Democratic allies are making a renewed push to bolster public opinion behind his health care agenda. On Wednesday, Obama hosted a call with religious leaders who backed his proposal. Later on Thursday, he is hosting an open strategy session with his campaign arm - Organizing for America - to discuss the political landscape surrounding the health care debate.

Through it all, he has stuck to a familiar script: health care reform needs to expand coverage, lower costs, and increase competition. A public option, Obama said on Thursday, is the best vehicle for achieving these goals. But no one should be "obligated to go into a public plan."

On Thursday, Obama showed a certain amount of frustration with the GOP, but he did little to indicate he was willing to give up on recruiting bipartisan support.

"As far as negotiations with Republicans, my attitude has always been, let's see if we can get this done with some consensus," he said. "I would love to have more Republicans engaged and involved in this process. I think, early on, a decision was made, by the Republican leadership that said, look, 'let's not give them a victory. Maybe we can have a replay of 1993, '94 when Clinton came in, he failed on health care and then we won in the midterm elections and we got the majority. And I think there are some folks who are taking a page out of that playbook."

"But this shouldn't be a political issue," he added. "This is an issue for the American people. There are a bunch of Republicans out there who have been working very constructively. One of them, [Sen.] Olympia Snowe in Maine, she's been dedicated on this. [Sens.] Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) and Mike Enzi (R-Wyo.) are others. They've been meeting in the Senate Finance Committee. I want to give them a chance to work through these processes and we're happy to make sensible compromises. What we're not willing to do is give up on the core principle."

Charles Krauthammer called Michael Smerconish a "Faux Conservative." So apparently he isn't welcome into the Republican party either. That big tent is getting to look a lot like a pup tent. And I thought is was interesting that he used the word "Faux." He must be reading some of these postings.

I am a proud, grateful recipient of government sponsored, "socialized" medicine; and I LOVE IT. The clinic in my area is open Saturday and Sunday, and in times of need, I have been able to just walk-in and see a doctor. The offices are more than adequate, as is the care. I haven't seen any of the MD's driving Rolls Royce's, which tells me, that they are primarily concerned with practicing medicine and healing the sick, than they are with living obscenely lavish lifestyles. There is one problem however, that I have noticed; the excessive number of children from families who cannot possibly support them, who our society can no longer afford to indulge. If the government places limits on childbirth, EVERYONE in our society will be able to afford excellent health care. Families who disregard these recommendations should be fined, not rewarded. (Maybe gays should get a stipend for NOT having children, or for adopting the ones that straight people reproduce indiscrimately).

Thanks for the link. I applaud your fifteen minutes of fame too. I thought your question to the president was a legitimate concern and I am glad that you asked the question.

I kept my mouth shut in 2006 when I felt compelled to purchase DRUG insurance. I didn't scream and yell. I was almost scared to breathe for fear of being called unpatriotic. Well, guess what, the DRUG premiums ALONE have increased 66.4% in 3 years to $468 yr. (double that for two). BUT, I am beginning to feel very PATRIOTIC.

It's not really over yet. Hopefully the outcome:

Asses kicked, names taken by President Obama.

Everyone in the country knows bipartisanship is so much lip service, because everyone in the country knows the Repubs. have continuously stated, and shown, that they won't work together with the Dems. Their strategy - force compromises under the threat of not going along with ANYTHING, then, when all of the compromises have been made, then not going along with ANYTHING.

I hope: Obama realizes this, is still calling for cooperation and good-faith bargaining. Then, when it doesn't materialize, as stated above, then go ahead with that last statement: "What we're not willing to do is give up on the core principle." If that happens, 36 more years of unraveling of the conservative religious/industrial complex. Here's hoping!

How about a boxing analogy.
Obama comes out of the corner during round one with a few weak left jabs and a bit of dancing, circling the ring. Then he retreats to the ropes, for no apparent reason, using the rope-a-dope technique. His opponent, manages to land a some hard right hands but it is difficult to determine whether any damage was inflicted except for the low blows, which the referee ignores.
It becomes obvious by the middle rounds, that Obama missed some good opportunities to score points mostly because of weak counterpunches and the impression that his timing is off (many are waiting for the big right hand or at least a good combination). The crowd grows impatient and begins to chant "sting like a bee!" There is still time to turn the judges score cards around. It's a close fight by all indications and certainly closer that it needs to be. Now Obama will have to really fight hard and smart. He may need a knockout to win. His fans hope he trained enough to gain a second wind and finish the fight strong.

*sigh* Folks...this is exactly how Obama became President. He ki//z his opponents with kindness which gives him license to move more aggressively after they fail to support his agenda. People are losing it. I just can't get nervous until I see the final bill. Such nervous nellies on the left AND the right! Difference is they SHOULD be nervous on the right. Healthcare WILL be reformed, and reformed in a way that is going to do more than just pacify the left. If it doesn't happen, then we can have heart failure. It's all speculative nonsense until then.

suntime I'm a Fan of suntime I'm a fan of this user permalink Maybe if your group insurance had out of state competition which is not allowed, your premiums might be cheaper. How about medical savings accounts? How about tort reform? What's so bad about those idea? Oh I forgot, the Dems hate that loss of control. That's the key about this fiasco health care plan, the Dems just want to control your life.

These people don't care about the issue...many of them don't understand it, which is why they make such handy pawns for the disgruntled right.

I voted for Obama and will continue to support Obama, but he needs to stop acting as if people can't comprehend what he is saying. Remember when Obama said the public option was very important to reform, but now it is a small piece of the whole thing. Now he says are positioned hasn't changed, but it has and everybody can see it. Now i know plenty of people will say he's a super genius, but he's not. Obama is a regular person and is trying to do politics as usual along with the Dems and Repubs. They will lose nothing if nothing gets passed, they will still have their plans in place either way. So if he wants support, first stop trying to act like people didn't hear you correctly, second pick a side and go with it. So, left and middle keep holding his feet to the fire.
