nytimes.com:

British officials said the people arrested could be part of an organized group that operated a network of companies trading large volumes of the permits. The officials did not name those arrested. The agency said the fraud was carried out by companies in the network that bought the carbon permits outside of Britain without paying Value Added Tax, a levy known as V.A.T.

President Obama will suffer far greater political damage if he pushes cap & trade, than he has experienced in the health care debate. The difference is that so much of the criticism of his health initiative is based on lies and manipulation. On the global warming side, however, his critics are highly regarded scientists with the greater weight of scientific research on their side, and not easily dismissed. The people will learn of the shaky science on which the President rests his policy and the increased costs they will be asked to pay in the dead of winter to stop global "warming." The program will never get out of Congress, the uproar will be so great. The damage will be far-reaching and permanent.

Wishful thinking. The scientists against AGW will be demogouged and trivialized. Scientists live on government funding, those going against the tide of AGW will dry up.

i appreciate your observation about how money has corrupted the debate. But those who oppose AGW have been growing louder, and braver and producing a lot of new research which shows the gaps and errors in AGW theory. As the earth continues to cool, and as skepticism grows about cap & trade, time is on the side of the AGW - opposed scientists.

Sorry, bird, the facts - the scientific facts - are not on your side. In short, you're wrong.

Heck, even McCain knows the truth better than you - why not look up his comments from just yesterday (or, at least reported here on HufPo yesterday)?

The whole carbon trading set of regulations is a much bigger fraud designed by special interests. The idiotic carbon trading should be replaced by a simple policy shift from "coal clunkers" to clean nuclear, wind or other source of clean energy.

The whole idea of "carbon trading" is insane. Somehow Al Gore and other scam artists have convinced really s t u p i d people that carbon dioxide, ya know, something we all exhale, has some sort of monetary value. Then there are other s t u p i d people who will buy into that notion and then get charged with tax fraud.

Al Gore is the P.T. Barnum of our time.

At least the oil industry delivers a product that people want and need. These scamsters just "make money" for themselves on our backs through high energy prices. They will not do anything about pollution.
US version of cap and trade will enrich more Goldman Sachs types and get in the way of progress when good green technologies appear on the market. In order to protect their gravy train they will do anything including lobbying the government to suppress them and buying the patents so that they will not be used.
We all know the banksters get their way in Washington.

The government is creating a new, more powerful status quo to replace the existing status quo.

I've been skeptical of it too. It seems to me these pollution credits will be yet more Monopoly money for Wall Street, but I've never been able to see how they would finance all these Green investments that we want.

I've been pretty skeptical of the concept. Just make companies reduce pollution at the source and there's no question. End of story.

Coming soon to a country near you.

More benefits for Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley courtesy of Waxman and Pelosi. No benefits to environment or economy.

Figures this is the "way" for American industry too -- lots of opportunity for lavish lifestyles based upon fraud and pollution. Calling such people pigs does a huge disservice to those noble farm animals.

The whole carbon credit market is one big racket. This isn't surprising.
