Oh please people stop saying our companion animals aren't "green" because they use up resources. Do they use up resources the way our children do? Please, they aren't using oil and gasoline and water the way people do, it's a bogus argument to say that. Okay, so they have a little flatulence, not any more than Uncle Al or Granny Annie. In fact they help sooth our souls, calm us down and they certainly help handicapped children, the elderly, etc., cope and become part of the real world. They do so much good, don't use that specious argument. They are under our guardianship and we are the ones who can cut down on the resources for ourselves, our children and our pets. It's up to us, we can all live in this world together.
Come on, what would we do without pets?
Pets aren't green! At the heart of the green concept is conservation of resources -- you know, things we use in the course of living. Having a pet has nothing to do with conservation of resources -- having a pet requires an expenditure of resources.
Why is this story in the "Green" section? It is more applicable to "Living".
And besides, dog flatulence is, like bovine flatulence, a global warming PROBLEM, not a solution.

A pet population uses resources, the same as any other population - heating, cooling, transportation, medicine. Almost all pet food is mostly animal products that are the product of industrialized animal husbandry or industrialized fishing, and the food also has to be stored and shipped. All animal waste has to be disposed, usually through sewage systems or garbage collection, which also uses resources. Sodium bentonite, the primary ingredient in clumping cat litter, is obtained through strip mining. It's a long list.
People like pets but they're not "green" by any stretch.
