Grassley Reverses Course: No Death Panels In Bill

First Posted: 09/23/09 06:12 AM ET Updated: 05/25/11 02:55 PM ET

Grassley

Senator Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) acknowledged on Sunday that the claims he made two weeks ago -- that Democratic health care legislation would allow the government to "pull the plug on grandma" -- did not reflect the language of the bills.

In an appearance on CBS' "Face the Nation," the Iowa Republican admitted that the current legislation being considered by Congress didn't include the infamous death panel provision that would allow the government to determine who should live or die.

"I know the Pelosi bill doesn't intend to do that," said Grassley. "It won't do that," he added later.

Grassley's admission concludes several weeks of speculation as to why the senator, one of three key Republicans negotiating a bipartisan health care bill, would latch on to the infamous myth. The White House insisted that it still wanted to work with Grassley even after he made his remarks. But on Capitol Hill and outside of government, Democrats were furious that the key GOP point person for a bipartisan bill was deploying such toxic rhetoric.

But if Grassley's initial statement seemed bizarre, his explanation for making the remark was equally curious. The Iowa Republican said he was merely trying to quell concerns of constituents who had read about death panels on the internet and grew scared when they heard talk of increased government involvement in the health care system.

"I was responding to a question at my town hall meetings," he told host Bob Schieffer. "I let my constituents set the agenda. A person that asked me that question was reading from language that they got off of the internet. It scared my constituents. And the specific language I used was language that the president had used at Portsmouth. And I thought that if he used the language, then if I responded exactly the same way, that I had an opposite concern about not using end-of-life counseling for saving money, then I was answering and relieving the fears that my constituents had."

"And from that standpoint, remember, you're talking about this issue being connected with a government-run program which a public option would take you with, you would get into the issue of saving money, and put these three things together and you are scaring a lot of people," he added. "I know the Pelosi bill doesn't intend to do that. But that's where it leads people to."

Touching of the bizarreness of the whole segment, earlier in the program it was Grassley who was accusing the White House of damaging health care negotiations by sending mixed messages on its beliefs and preferences.

"It would help if we did not get conflicting views from the White House," he said.

Pathetic. He knew the truth a month ago, and chose not to defend the truth when confonted with the lies and distortions his constiuents believed from radio blowhards and "the internets." Shameful.

I saw that interview. Grassley looked and sounded like a tortured liar. The Moderator should retire. I couldn't believe he let Grassley ramble on, trying not to admit that he stood before a crowd of citizens and willfully told a malicious lie.

By stressing this bipartisan nonsense, the Dems will utlimately share the goodwill they'll receive for reforming health care with the Republicans. Why would they do that?

The Republicans know that real health care reform will kill them and their political philosophy forever. Ram it through without them and kill the conservative ideology in one fell swoop.

"I bear no responsibility for the stupid things that I say or the stupid things that I do. It is the fault of the liberal media, the internet, the left, the gays, the illegal aliens, terrorists, Muslims and all the other un-American, unpatriotic people out there. I did not say the things you saw and heard me saying on that tape. It was my doppleganger who happens to actually be a liberal socialist. Do you honestly think that I would be dumb enough to answer my constituents questions with lies and misleading information to propogate fear and confusion when there could possibly be someone taping the event?? I'm a Senator for crying out loud. I'm one of the leaders in this country. Give me more credit than that, would ya?"

You can't blame Grassley for desperately lying to the public. Imagine if health care passed and actually worked well during Obama's first four years! The Democrats would take credit for a huge service to America & the GOP would be exposed as working only for the industry.

And that would be bad because......because........

Well, I'm sure that Rush could explain why it would be bad.

Our System:
1. got a job? keep it. get health coverage with that job? kill to keep it.
2. don't get sick and lose your job for it because if you do you're screwed.
3. when the job you nearly killed for is offshored to assure even higher profits yet for the shareholders or the proprietor, just take it in stride. after all nobody's holding a gun to your head and forcing you to forego that college degree. besides, I hear that homelessness is a great character builder.
4. if you don't earn enough to pay your bills and contribute heavily to political campaigns of both parties you're a deadbeat so get over being invisible and without the slightest power to influence your situation. you just don't rate high enough to be bothered with by those ever so busy politicians. After all they have real patriotic constituents to represent.
5. if you have existing health issues, don't lose what coverage you have because you'll never get health insurance again at any price. that means you're going to die a slow and miserable death because polite society is done with your sorry a$$ and doesn't give a da#n about you.
See, it's all very easy to understand how these things really work. now, go outside and play. I thank Senators Charles Grassley (Republican, Iowa) and Joe Lieberman (Independent, CT) for doing so much to help clarify this issue for me. Looking forward to meeting with you when I too become destitute.

LOLOLOL, Yeah, I already told him that. Personally, I don't think dodering old people should be in a position to legislate for us. There is way too much of it, and it really should stop. They do NOT have the interests of those who are younger at heart, they are living in the past, (for the most part), and have lost all contact with current and future realities.

It is too easy for bitter old men, who can't p@*s to send young men and women to war, and too hard for them to imagine a future where they aren't in control.

Term limits ought to have been about people over 75 serving in politics. Need I remind you of John McCain and his VP choice, or the more than 11 times he addressed his rallies at "MY FELLOW PRISONERS!!!!!" I couldn't beleive the media let that slip, it was disgraceful that he even pretended to be a viable candidate!

Grassley is doing 70 - 80% election margins. He is popular in Iowa. Iowa is a good state - good people. He was selected to do the heavy lifting for the other republicans who were not winning with those high margins. I think all these guys are FOR reform, but they can't SAY they are - they haven't got much going for them as it is. If they let the Dems win easy - they will maybe have LESS power. SO.... he is not a very good actor. He got both feet planted in his mouth. He is a moderate republican. If he switches to the Dems, maybe he donesn't win the elections at all. Hey!...welcome to the future!

Wow! I'm a freedom loving Aussie and I find this paranoia over decent pubic health care amazing.

We've had it for almost 30 years.

I've expounded on this in many of Huffo's threads but let me simply say... America you deserve better, do not believe the Conservative lies.

NB: It took two goes in my country to get universal Medicare established. The Conservatives got rid of it when they got voted back in. The Labor Party re-established it at the next election after that. And although they have undermined it every time they got back into power the Conservatives don't dare try to get rid of it again. What I am getting at here is you have to push HARD for it- it's NOT going to happen through bi-partisanship.

Is this guy reflective of the people who reside in his state? If so I need to quit using corn products. How do you know if Grassley is telling a lie? His lips move.

Quite using corn anyway. Read "The Omnivore's Dilemma" to find out why. As for Sen. Ghastly, his shelf life has expired and it's time to throw him out.

Grassley claims that he was just "answering and relieving the fears that my constituents had."

How exactly does his quote below accomplish that?

"There is some fear because in the House bill, there is counseling for end-of-life," Grassley said. "And from that standpoint, you have every right to fear.
