When Sean Penn and Robin Wright Penn attended the 2009 Academy Awards together in February, the couple -- whose 13-year marriage had its share of ups and downs over the past two years -- seemed to be on-again.

But six months later, the reconciliation ended with Wright filing for divorce Aug. 12. According to the legal papers in Marin County, Calif., the estranged couple "agreed to division of all property" and "[shared] custody" of son Hopper Jack, 16. They also have a daughter together, Dylan, 18.

Hey folks, I know these people, personally. It's not like we're close or anything, but we share some political concerns and I have spent an evening at their house recently discussing politics... They don't deserve this. And, I've seen something of their relationship, up close and personal and, frankly, it's none of OUR business. Whatever I might say would be just my opinion and while perhaps more directly informed than, say, People Magazine's, it's still an opinion, and just like sphincters, everybody's got one and most of them stink.

Having a couple of good roles and doing something nice for others doesn't always make you a nice person, nor does it improve your relationships. Character isn't developed by deciding who not to punch or by wearing the mask of a miserable anorexic. Marriage takes a lot of effort on both sides. If they can't work it out, maybe they'd be happier being split. Then they can each meet someone else on the next set, fall madly in love and start the process all over again!
