Maybe the United States can stop looking down with contempt at Castro and possibly learn a thing or two.
I agree. We need to ban citizens from having computers, or being able to mingle in the tourist areas.
The longevity of this man is amazing. JFK, Kruschev, Nixon, Ike, Reagan....Castro is still standing.
Must be that socialized medicine or is it photoshop?
Not one world leader today can match the exciting life and times of the Commandante Fidel Castro. His most endearing trait is that he is the mortal enemy of the republican party. He has elevated from slavery all of the poor of Cuba and has shown the world that it can be done when you rid yourself of US control. May he live forever ... at least in the minds of the people.
his mortal enemy is not the republican party. it's the u.s.
while he was in power for the past 50 years, he hated us during lbj, kennedy, carter, clinton, and obama as well.
doesn't his presence as a leader for cuba for so long tell you what kind of person or country they have there? imagine if we had the same leader for 50 years......
We surely couldn't be any worse off than we are now. Aggressive wars, homeless people, sick without help, education in a shambles, the population so dumb that they elected a disaster for president twice. Cuba has no aggressive wars, no homeless, better education by far than the US, free healthcare, and has done all of this under one leader. Maybe we should try it when our people get smart enough to vote.
He has no mortal enemies ... he is the mortal enemy of ... I can see that reading is not one of your strong points.
Fidel is a mentor of President Obama and we need all of the inspiration we can get right now..Very exciting news for the Obama admin.!
This is great news!!! We need Fidel, and Hugo both, to help guide Obama's policy. They are the true founders of the progressive movement, and Obama needs their help to make out country mirror theirs!!!
Michael Moore said in his movie that Cuba had a better health care system than the US. I guess he was right.
A little HGH and a fine cigar.
The BBC has got some recent video footage of him, he looks healthy.

With all the comments praising Fidel and Cuba's healthcare system, you'd think nobody in the world ever suspected a country of using old or retouched photos as propaganda in print. In an age when people communicate instantly via satellite, why are we so willing to settle for rumor when we could actually see him? And if Cuba is such a wonderful place, why are so many still risking their lives and freedom to escape to America?
Here's an idea... let's open the gates. Cubans who want to come to America are welcome. And all of you who are so enamored with Cuba can pack up and move. Have a nice life!
NObody said it's perfect.
It just has a BETTER HEALTH CARE SYSTEM THAN THE UNITED STATES because their GOVERNMENT made it a PRIORITY even though almost everyone is very poor. I know you would like to be able to make money off the Cuban people by selling them insurance policies - but don't whine about it.
Last I heard, Cuba has NO MEDICINE. I've seen hidden camera footage of Cuba's health care system and it wasn't pretty.
Why don't you ask those recently homeless people all over the US if they would like to go to a place where healthcare and education are free and everyone has enough to eat and a roof over their head. This has been accomplished in spite of the most powerful economic country in the world trying in every wat to bankrupt Cuba. Many of those who come to the US from Cuba are soon disillusioned want to return but cannot.
Damndit this is not even Socialist Government run healthcare. It is Communist government run healthcare.
We sure are a sorry lot trying to prop up the private insurance industry at a detriment to ourselves.
Even as we hear of the poverty and bad conditions in Cuba due to our too long blockage of the people, Fidel gets the same healthcare as all of the Cuban People at the same cost.
Why does anyone listen to the Reichwing Republic Party?
Cuba can trade with any other Country in the World. Why don't they? A Communist/Socialist controls the population by keeping them dirt poor. Don't let Fidels green fatigues fool you, he's a very wealthy man. Wealth he has accumulated at the expense of the Cuban people, I might add. The Man gets no sympathy, nor does he deserve any.
Latin American countries who have governments that "controls the population by keeping them dirt poor" have this nasty habit of a rising up by those same poor against their oppressors. Interestingly, even after nearly 50 years in power, the Communist government in Cuba has withstood internal strife, attempted assasinations, outright assaults, and a trade embargo designed to bring a small, regional country to it knees.
American imperailsm in all its glory, resources, "intelligence", and money got their as*** kicked OUT of Cuba the first 2 weeks of 1959 and haven't been back since.
That alone is a stunning victory against American Capitalism in the imperialist epoch. But the FACT that they have prevailed speaks volumes about the quality of life in Cuba, the brave Cuban people, and their leadership.
Those are FACTS that can't be denied
USA 37th
Cuba 39th
what costs a nickel in CUba costs $100 in the USA
Oh thank god...Isn't this the best news on HP in a long time!!!
Please, this just tells you about the people working at the w.h.o. Cuba has NO medicine, and they are "equal" to the US. What a Joke the w.h.o is. The Cubans get a nickels worth of health care, that is the truth.
This isn't surprising. Cuba has a better healthcare system than we do. Castro didn't have to sell his house to pay for it.
So does Nicaragua.
My wife just had her appendix removed here by a Cuban Doctor. We could have gone to the community hospital where the operation would have been free. We decided to go to a private clinic where we enjoyed a private room, our own nurse and all the medicine for 1000 dollars. Operation went very well. Incision 3 inches. Post Op no additional charge.
If Nicaragua, the second poorest country in the Americas, can do it why can't the USA? Answer:
GREED.
my friend had appendix surgery here recently. the doctor required $3000 for his 3 hour surgery. hospital overnight 12,000. anesthesiologist 1000.
doctors services seem ok. hospitals are where the robbery is.
I would never trust my life with a Cuban trained doctor. How hard would you study in med school knowing you would never see a pay check? Think about that. How competitive can that program be?
Maybe he can free that guy they just put in jail for making a video saying he was hungry and blamed the government.
I can't say I blame them for putting him in jail. He really should have blamed the US embargo.
So unless someone says what you think they should say, they belong in jail. I agree we should drop the embargo, but the country really should be able to feed itself, especially with all the low cost oil given them by Chavez.
