LOS ANGELES — The war effort by Quentin Tarantino and Brad Pitt has paid off as their history lesson "Inglourious Basterds" claimed victory at the box office with a $37.6 million debut.

It was Tarantino's best opening ever, exceeding the $25.1 million haul for 2004's "Kill Bill – Vol. 2." Overseas, "Inglourious Basterds" added $27.5 million in 22 countries, giving it a worldwide total of $65.1 million.

Released domestically by the Weinstein Co. and overseas by Universal, "Inglourious Basterds" features Pitt and an international ensemble in a sprawling tale of Jewish commandos and a plot to take out Nazi leaders at a movie premiere during World War II.

The film provided a much-needed hit for Harvey and Bob Weinstein, who have managed only lackluster receipts at their new outfit since departing Disney-owned Miramax four years ago.

At Miramax, the Weinsteins balanced prestige and profit with a string of Academy Awards triumphs such as "Shakespeare in Love" and "Chicago" and hits such as Tarantino's "Pulp Fiction" and the "Scary Movie" and "Scream" franchises.

"Tarantino helped build the house of Miramax. He's proving right now that he's helping to build the house of Weinstein," said Paul Dergarabedian, box-office analyst for Hollywood.com.

So far, the Weinstein Co. has been unable to reproduce that Miramax success, its lineup burdened by box-office underachievers such as last year's "Soul Men" and 2007's "Grindhouse," Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez's B-movie double-feature.

Harvey Weinstein said critics continually write off him and his brother, including a magazine piece in 2002 "saying we were the flavor of the '90s but we were kind of over in the new millennium."

Weeks later, he noted, Miramax scored 40 Oscar nominations, among them three of the five best-picture nominees, including eventual winner "Chicago."

Weinstein said his new company has a strong lineup ahead, including next weekend's horror sequel "Halloween II" along with "Chicago" director Rob Marshall's musical "Nine" and the post-apocalypse saga "The Road" late in the year.

Rodriguez, Tarantino's "Grindhouse" partner, did not fare so well with "Shorts," his Warner Bros. family comedy that debuted at No. 6 with just $6.6 million. The movie features William H. Macy, James Spader, Leslie Mann and a cast of kids in a series of loosely linked adventures centered on a magic rock that grants wishes.

Fox Atomic's comedy "Post Grad," with Alexis Bledel as a college graduate who moves back home with her eccentric family after she's unable to land her dream job, tanked with $2.8 million, coming in at No. 10.

The previous weekend's top movie, Sony's sci-fi thriller "District 9," slipped to second-place with $18.9 million. With a domestic total of $73.5 million, the movie is on its way to becoming a $100 million sleeper hit.

Hollywood's revenues were up for the third-straight weekend, a late-season surge that has helped the industry recover from a monthlong slide in receipts. Overall ticket sales were $134 million, up 27 percent compared to the same weekend last year.

The weekend put Hollywood back on track to break last summer's revenue record of $4.2 billion, though receipts this season are up only a fraction.

Factoring in higher ticket prices this year, movie attendance is running 3 percent below last summer's, according to Hollywood.com.

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Hollywood.com. Final figures will be released Monday.

1. "Inglourious Basterds," $37.6 million.

2. "District 9," $18.9 million.

3. "G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra," $12.5 million.

4. "The Time Traveler's Wife," $10 million.

5. "Julie & Julia," $9 million.

6. "Shorts," $6.6 million.

7. "G-Force," $4.2 million.

8. "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince," $3.5 million.

9. "The Ugly Truth," $2.9 million.

10. "Post Grad," $2.8 million.

Even if you disliked the movie, you have to at least appreciate the amazing first chapter.
Wow! It was a work of art. A little short film that can stand alone and win an oscar.
That scene alone should be enough to silence any critics. Tarantino creates art with film.

I really liked "INGLORIOUS BASTERDS.
It was Lurid and Freakin' Hilarious!
I feel it's Taratino's BEST film.

If Christoph Waltz doesn't get an Oscar nod and WIN, I'm gonna be pissed. Hans Landa is one of the greatest film villains EVER!!!

He's like a violent twist on both Captain Renault and Major Strasser from "CASABLANCA".

The dialogue in the film was great.
Very well written.

Although Pitt didn't appear in the film as much as most people would like, I think he served his purpose well. His role (IMO) was more than just a leader of a band of assassins, he embodied the ruthless collective personality of the American people. Tarantino shows us who we are through Aldo the Apache. We are the "Indians" and also the cowboys. Blend them together and you've got trouble.

Aldo refused to even TRY to disguise his LOUD Americanness. His American tendency to emphasize the wrong syllable in a foreign word and flatten the short "a" sound; (instead of Naht-zi he said Naaat-zi) was hilarious and familiar. That preening narcissistic, wide legged way he stood with his hands on his hips like he owns the place and his hilarious disrespect for other cultures and the refusal to try and disguise himself was distinctly American.

I agree, and I think that the Nazis' attitudes in the movie, reflect the most celebrated personality trait in American culture.

This is why I love QT. In a interview they asked him if he'd ever remake or adapt a book to a movie and he said no, because he likes taking a blank piece of paper and writing up a story and building up original characters. Which seems to be the opposite of what Hollywood is doing these days, where every other movie is either a remake of something (cartoon, comic book, TV show etc) or some d0mb horror movie. Its clear that Hollywood has run out of original ideas. Hollywood need more film makers like QT.

Amen. Maybe its fun for the kids today, but I'm tired of Hairspray, Footloose, Fame, Halloween, Texas Chain. Mass., The Hills Have Eyes, The Omen, Transformers etc.

The song "Dont You Forget About Me" by Simple Minds must have been about the 80s because people just wont let it go and FORGET ABOUT IT! Good grief!

Elmore Leonard's "Rum Punch" = Jackie Brown

He reworked it but it was an adaptation

This movie flat out sucked...
First of all it shouldn't have been called Inglorious Basterds considering they got like 20 mins. out of the the 2:45 verbal diarrhea fest...
The scenes were 10-15 mins too long with the smirky "J** killer" eating up about 2 hours and 20 mins of the entire movie with his ponderous dialogue going on and on and on.....In fact they should have named the movie after him considering he dominates the entire thing....

The movie was all about ADD stricken Q.T. trying to be an adult and it fails miserably. If you have a grip of time and love seeing things come from a mile away. This is for you....if you are expecting anything mildly like the trailers....pppfffttt save your jack.

..oh one more thing for you Brad Pitt fans...he's in it maybe for about 25 mins.

Obviously not a Tarantino fan eh? Not a WWII fan ? well Tarantino is the most genius director of his era much like Hitchcock was of his.

How many Lambs were in Silence of the Lambs?

How cold was the Big Chill?

You probably thought Spielburg screwed up by having the shark only show up here or there in Jaws too.

Considering the "J** killer" was actually the "J** hunter," I'm thinking it's your ADD that might be at issue. But, hey, everyone's entitled to an opinion, just as everyone else is entitled to politely counter said opinion with reason.

The movie was marketed around the "Inglorious Basterds"...every trailer, every tweet, every interview with Brad Pitt. They had NOTHING to do with the final outcome.
My Bad on the mean guys "nick name". Just saw the movie 12 hours ago and already forgot....it must had something to do with my lack of inspiration.

..just sayin. A HUGE lie in the marketing BUT it's classic Tarantino, just keep talking so pseudo-intellectuals think your "clever"...

The movie was marketed around the "Inglorious Basterds"...every interview, every tweet, every trailer. Unfortunately they had nothing to do with the movie. All they were was a foil for the "J** hunter" (my bad....that detail was beyond important...*yawn).

Personally I was completely let down. I was looking forward to a movie that appeared to be an appropriate revenge flick on the most evil nation in history with a group of men that "appeared" interesting.
I didn't expect 30 min sit down conversations that come to conclusion we can ALL see coming from a mile away.

The marketing was a all out LIE and it deserves the beating I'm giving it. All I'm saying is if anybody expects this movie to center around the "Inglorious Basterds"...don't bother. leave this one to the pseudo-intellects....

I walked out of the theater believing that I just saw one of the top 15 films of the last 10 years ! The art direction was flawless, the pacing, the acting from EVERYONE, the nervous scenes kept you sweating . I love film and I am rather hard to please from a " film as an Art" point of view. I was nearly giddy from the very first scene . BRAVO to all involved in the making of Quinton's best film to date. Hands down . This will be a classic . A Nazi fantasy !!!! ( on Ice )

"Inglorious Basterds" was a pleasant surprise....quite fulfilling movie, especially if you like to see Germans and Nazis getting their comeuppance. The audience applauded at a Sunday afternoon matinee......bode well for its #1 dominance!

Good one Brad (though you were a little pudged out in this movie).

My son saw it twice, my husband was annoyed by it - but glad to watch it, no other choice for the rational down the mall. I didn't mind it because I went into a comedy. One more episode from the 'Basterds' would have been good. Chop 45 mins

A film far and away more refreshing than most, not all, but most of the mind numbing films I see being released. I do agree the opening scene was classic cinema. The film might have had some slight faults, but it seems to me to be what cinema represents at it's finest.
