NEW YORK — A New York City lawmaker wants to see Michael Jackson honored at a subway station where the star made the music video for "Bad."

Councilwoman Letitia James wants a plaque placed at Brooklyn's Hoyt-Schermerhorn station – or to have "Jackson" added to the station's name.

Metropolitan Transportation Authority spokesman Kevin Ortiz said Monday it's unlikely. James, undeterred, plans a petition drive.

Jackson, who died June 25, shot the Martin Scorsese-directed music video at the downtown Brooklyn station in 1987.

Ortiz says the MTA prohibits station plaques. The agency is developing naming-rights guidelines.

Let's wait an appropriate amount of YEARS before anything is renamed after Michael Jackson. He wasn't Mother Theresa, for goodness sake.

This is the kind of reckless disregard and hatred that killed Michael Jackson.

This is a very bad idea to name anything after a junkie, and that was MJ. Only difference between MJ and a unknown person dying from drug use, money!!! And the power of the family to push for someone to blame other then MJ.

Before his death from overdose of prescription medications administered by physicians, would you have justified your position by calling him a pedophile instead?

There is always a reason to not name things after folks when you systematically set out to ruin their reputation and life for years. This too will pass because many of the individuals being so critical of MJJ have all kind of skeletons in their closets including excessive plastic surgery, drug use RX and street, illicit relationships, secret relationships, sexual anomalies, bulimics & purgers, overeaters, alcoholics, etc.. etc...

Tokyo would probably do it before anyone over here would.

Sad but true.

That's because too many people here are sheeple when it comes to listening to the MSM. Doing one's own research on the cases and looking for unbiased articles on the matter doesn't hurt. But that's too much effort for these people.

You immediately ruin everything sensible in your comment by using the beyond-played-out term 'sheeple'. Seriously, why do people still think that's clever?

Every other country will do something except the hypocritical, FAKE & FALSE moral majority, lying citizens and government officals in the USA.
WOW! WE CAN GET SOMETHING DONE BY BANDING TOGETHER AND DEMANDING VIA SIGNATURES ETC FOR WHATEVER MEMORIAL(s) WE WANT FOR MJJ.

Though it's certainly trivial, I'm sure Councilwoman James also devotes her time to other business. Renaming the station wouldn't make sense unless one of the streets (Hoyt or Schermerhorn) where it's located is also renamed; all other stations have descriptive names and tomake an exception here would just confuse riders unfamiliar with the system. That said, as a former resident of Brooklyn who lived near this station and used it almost daily, I think a plaque would be appropriate and wouldn't take food out of the mouths of the city's poor. The city certainly spends far more money on far more asinine projects. This isn't, incidentally, the station's only association with Jackson; it's also used in the film "The Wiz," for which a scene was shot there in 1977. And I think many of the people living in the Gowanus Projects, who also use this station, would appreciate a modest monument to a cultural icon.

Wicked. The LA coroner has just ruled his death a homicide. That is sad of course, but as his cuz, I am delighted for the kids that there is more to the tragedy than an accidental OD. FYI all New Yorkers, Spike Lee is throwing a birthday party for Mike on Saturday from noon to 5 in Prospect Park. Be there or be very square.

As a New Yoker and former Brooklynite I think it's a great idea and I support it. We don't have subway stations named after people yet, so why not begin with Michael Jackson.

It would also bring
much needed cash

Very nice idea to place a plaque at the station. It seems a very fitting and appropriate honor.

While I think MJ was a great entertainer, this is a ridiculous idea. New Yorkers, which I am, could care less about renaming a subway, putting up a plaque... Councilwoman Letitia James should be focusing on unemployment, budget issues, crime, increasing public services and etc. This action and her continued work on it shows that she is a desperate politician trying to drum up "exposure". In the end, it will bite her in the rear. Wake up and help the people of New York vs. helping your popularity.

I'm disappointed because the thing I love the most about NY & NY is their resilience, diversity, sensitivity, and your NY citizens' ability to bounce back while dealing with more than one project
at a time such as unemployment, education, budget issues, re-namimg or adding a name to subways. You will have the millions upon millions of MJJ's fans coming from all over the world to
visit the subway, Harlem's Apollo Theater, Carnegie Hall, and Madison Square Garden, etc. that
MJJ performed and frequented will bring in and positive activity & money to the city.
Council woman James work showed that she gets the big picture, innovation, creativity, and, while honoring a history making American Entertainer.

No comment on Michael Jackson, but it is just a TERRIBLE idea to start re-naming sub-way stations for celebrities, or worse yet, politicians, or maybe even corporate sponsors. Put up plague.

She even suggested a plaque. But why not the MTA is already strapped for money and all they keep doing is taking more money out of us straphangers.

That would be a great way to honor MJ and I'm for it. Funny how no one condemns naming anything Frank Sinatra Way when he had ties to the mob.

Yes, it amuses me how many terrible people that have many shrines/areas dedicated in there name, and how people against this scream "MJ was a pedophile!!!" Can't take these people seriously unless they actually did their research and read up on the cases instead of being sheeple and listening to whatever MSM tells them.
