Obamas' Date Night In Oak Bluffs

The Obamas got a chance to hit the town for a date night in Oak Bluffs on Martha's Vineyard on Tuesday evening.

The First Couple went out for dinner at The Sweet Life, which the Washington Post referred to as "a fancy little restaurant":

The Obamas finally arrived in time for 7:30 p.m. reservations at the restaurant. Earlier, he had spent about 90 minutes at the home of his friend and adviser, Valerie Jarrett.

On their last trip to the Vineyard, the Obamas dined at the same restaurant, which apparently is a favorite of Chelsea Clinton, reports the Telegraph.

How is it appropriate to take a vacation in this economic depression of ours? People are living in tents in some places in the US. Jobs are vanishing. How can the leader of the free world, be so insensitive to the millions of Americans who are struggling to eat, pay bills, and eek out a decent existence? I guess it is only during a campaign cycle when Americans matter because they can vote, in-between, we are left to our own devices, surviving not living. It is scandalous how our political leaders get away with so much, in Europe they would be ashamed to show their faces. But I guess that's what makes America great, no shame, no gain.

Stop wasting time posting drivel and go volunteer somewhere. Tutor a poor inner city kid, help the homeless, etc..do something to help your country instead of bitterly and jealously ranting about someone taking vacation with their family.

This is the first non-working vacation that President Obama has had and his two children deserve a vacation with their father and mother in the summertime.
The Obamas are paying for the rental home with THEIR OWN MONEY - money that they can do with as they please.
A rested president is a much better decision maker than an over worked one!

I understand why people can get slightly annoyed with the play-by-play... however, this is the 1st Family of The United States... and to be honest, this kind of coverage in unparalleled for local businesses... it can boost local economies that may be hurting... covering these 'outings' is more than frivolity, it has economic impact.

I am all for having a good time. But how is it appropriate for the President to go vacation with the elites in Martha's Vineyard but its not okay for Corporate Non-Public People to go to resorts, collect bonuses, or fly on private jets. It seems to me that there is a subtle double-standard to the Presidents discrimination of the rich and wealthy. He surrounds himself with the wealthy yet scorns them for showing off their wealth, which means spending it, but he is allowed to partake in the finer things in yuppy America. He tells Corporate America to stop flying private jets, but he takes Air Force one to vacation. He dines at fancy restaurants and wears nice clothes, but we the people, should act more low-key and be respectful of others impoverished lives. We are living in a depression of sorts, houses are being lost, jobs disappearing, no new jobs arriving, climate is acting weirder every year, health care is a mess, yet where oh where "Is The Fierce Urgency of Now"? Apparently, in Washington you don't have to get anything done to go on a vacation. Your job performance is measured in speeches and ideas not actual progress. I don't think Obama is a progressive, I think he's just another elitist like Bush.

Do you want to pay for all the security that would be necessary if they did like 'real people' and went to Disneyland, taking a room in a local motel? Be real: unless you are wealthy and already own huge estates, the only SAFE place for our president to go are onesthat are going to be rather elite and protected. ------------------- I, for one, am glad that he is takng a vacation (to the extent that he is). He works damn hard, dealing with very big and contentious issues. Geez. I am a person who doesn't make all that much. While I would say, sure the restaurant prices were higher than I might spend, they aren't much higher than some of the good restaurant prices here in blue collar Buffalo NY. So as some posts have suggested, I wouldn't call the restaurant elitest.

ya know i am sick of hearing about all their vacations and date night, it is really starting to annoy me, my parents who are on social security, are not going to get a cost of living raise until 2012, and they would like to know how this president is going to streamline medicare?

The is the first real vacation (non-working vacation- that the president has taken. I believe his two kids deserve to have this one-week vacation just like most other kids do in the summer time.

Btw, by getting the uninsured insured and keeping them out of the ER with non-emergencies will help everyone's insurance premiums from going up.

If people are not working, they are covered under Medicaid ... so they have insurance. It is the middle class that cannot afford insurance. The data do not support your assertions. Premiums are out of control. It is estimated that they will increase over 10% this year, well ahead of inflation. By the way, did you skip English class?

The reason your parents aren't getting a cost of living raise is because we are experiencing a period of deflation. Like it or not, the same indices that are used to determine when a COLA increase is warranted currently indicates one is not warranted. Live with it. Yes there will be an increase in the Medicare drug benefit resulting in a slight increase to those deductions, but lets face it, the average medicare receipient will receive every thing they paid in medicare deductions in over their working lifetime, during their first year on medicare. So they need to be mindful that it's US, their children who are footing the tab for their benefits, and stop complaining so much. So far the elderly and prisoners are the only ones in this country who are entitled to health care benefits.
