NEW YORK — Check your Twitter: Oprah Winfrey has some news.

The talk show host tweeted Monday that her first new book club pick in a year will be announced Friday, Sept. 18. In her announcement, Winfrey stated she had "never made a selection like `this.'"

The week of Sept. 14 could be a record-breaker for the publishing industry. It starts that Monday with the release of Sen. Ted Kennedy's "True Compass," followed the next day by Dan Brown's "The Lost Symbol" and capped by Winfrey's choice, which almost surely will sell hundreds of thousands of copies.

Winfrey's most recent pick was David Wroblewski's "The Story of Edgar Sawtelle." It was a word-of-mouth hit last summer and became a blockbuster in the fall after Winfrey endorsed it.

Just to put Oprah's legacy in perspective.................
This is, all told, a glorified weather woman, who got her own show,
built a huge fan base of at home moms who hang on her every single
animated reaction to anything, parlayed her money to make a lot more,
employing many smart, savvy writers, hired great publicists, made more money.

Now, getting bored, has become a full flledged, self absorbed twitter.
Plenty off them, for example Ashton Kutcher, and Puff Diddy Combs.

Truth be told, Oprah's famous, rich, but not terribly bright.
History has proved you can be powerful, rich, and gosh darn stupid, too.

For example, remember President George W. Bush?

Actually Oprah’s an absolutely brilliant woman as evidenced by the fact that she has completely dominated one of the most competitive & improvisational fields there is for 23 years, & in the process became both the richest & most philanthropic African American of all time & the most influential woman in the world. She may have a large staff now, but she started with a shoestring budget & a staff consisting of only 2 girls & a gay guy. It was only after raking in the highest ratings in television history that she was able to acquire a large staff & based on her continued success, she obviously made a very long series of brilliant hiring decisions. She also revolutionized American culture with her unique touchy-feely therapeutic style. A true original thinker. She created confessional culture & the tabloid talk show genre she popularized in the 1980s did more to make gays mainstream than any other 20th century development according to a Yale study. Later she would reinvent herself with a book club that made literature accessible to the masses, she would continue to shatter barriers for blacks and overweight women, & would even play a decisive role in the election of the first black president:

If this woman’s not a complete & total genius, she does the best imitation of one I have ever witnessed.

Sorry , but I respectably disagree.
Power and money don't necessarily equate to brains, much less brilliance.
Right place, at the right time, when woman and blacks were finally being
given a long overdue window and opportunity for achievement, was when
Oprah came on the scene. and capitalized on this, the new doors were open.

I have yet to see this original thinking. I agree, she is indeed a novel invention.
As far as the book club, I am in my fifties, and recall book club access to all as
far back as the sixties, way before Oprah ever was heard of.
Touchy-feely therapeutic style I honestly don't follow you, not joking.
Unless you are speaking of Dr. Phil, Dr. Oz, or a parade of therapists on the air.

Regarding dominance and riches through daytime TV, Judge Judy became very
powerful and rich through airing small claims courts to a TV audience.

When it comes to selling and sensationalizing little issues, she is tops at that.

She has helped President Obama's cause, but a decisive role? That's facetious.
President Obama's astute brilliance and understanding did that, all by himself.

Obama was the far wiser choice for President despite prejudices, his intelligence
and ability to reason and multi-task, after the incompetence of Bush was clear.

Excuse me, moderator, but what's up?
Where are my responses to "It had to be said's" gone ballistic over Oprah's insults?

You posted he response to me, so why not post my keen observation in response?
If anyone cares to read it, just go to G-guys's comments, and my answer.

Since you , for some odd reason, FAILED to post it.

I can't imagine that Oprah would actually pick it, but Kathy Griffin's book comes out around this time. It would be quite a coup if her efforts paid off...even if it's a joke. It would actually raise my opinion of Oprah a bit...proving that she has some sense of humor about herself.

Well, she's consistent. The incredible walking, talking, twittering human billboard.
Oprah's always tweeting about something. Sorry if I sound a bit cynical.

How were any of us surviving the last year, without Oprah's guidance, on what we should read?
Thank goodness she will be announcing her much awaited book pick.
The world holds it's breath, for this heralded proclamation!

You'll be happy to know that this, and all her "professional book reader choices",
are available for purchase at {surprise} Oprah's own book club, at a considerable fee. Yippee!!!!

"Sorry if I sound a bit cynical."

Why apologize if you don't mean it?? Actually, you don't sound cynical as much as you sound resentful. So tell me, which do you resent more . . . that she has unparalleled influence on women worldwide, or that even without making a dime off of her Book Club she still has more money now than you ever will??

OK. Not sorry.
It is of my opinion that the woman preys on gullible, naive people, who likely would
follow her anywhere, including off a cliff. We know she's rich. There's lots of rich people.

Her fan base, her show, her magazine {who else places themselves on every cover
of EVERY magazine}, her pompous guidance as "book expert" telling you what you
really should read, down to her self-absorbed but inevitable love of "twitter world",
is all a billboard luring of the bored housewives, targeting the weak-minded, IMO.

Sounds like you have a target on your back, compliments of Oprah.
Looking forward to her next "Dr. Oz" appearance on her show?
You know, the guy that leave the hospital in his surgical scrubs, runs to Oprah's
show, and then returns to the hospital. How obtuse is that?

Wanna buy the Brooklyn bridge? I'll give you a good price.

She doesn't "prey" on anyone. Predators are usually after something; as I told you before, she has more than you (or any other person) could give her. She needs not a thing from you.

If you knew anything of her that was based in FACT, you would know she has an avid love of books /literature. That's simply who she is and she shares that with her audience. As for her magazine, well, she IS an entertainer /entrepreneur (among other noteworthy titles) and as it is HER magazine, who ELSE would be on the cover?! You?? LOL . . . Maybe on a issue of "B!tter, Upt!ght, Resentful Men's Quarterly."

No, there's no target. Just a woman who admires Oprah and celebrates her success. Also a woman who read your post and detected more than a hint of spite.

The woman knows how to make money that's for sure. She's shallow and everything she does is self-serving but she knows how to make money.

How is giving over $306 million of her own hard earned money to charity shallow & self-serving? How is risking her own popularity to campaign to help elect the first black president (and one who intended to riase taxes on the rich like her) who was way behind in the polls at the time, shallow & self-serving? I can't think of anyone else in history who has climbed out of such adversity to give more of their own hard earned money to charity than Oprah & you describe her as shallow & self-serving? I don't think you'd describe a white male philanthropist that way.

A book like 'this' before. What could that mean?
The Bible?
The Dictionary?
A 4th Grade Social Studies book?
Maybe making a statement in some way?

What is sad is that Oprah helped Obama get elected with major concert like visibility. On health care it would be nice if Oprah went to the mat, the same way to get a good bill passed.

She's been great friends with Eunice's daughter. She didn't know MJ outside of one interview 15 years ago. For years Oprah said that if Eunice ever ran for president, Oprah would quite her job to campaign for her.

Michael Jackson's service was a cheesey spectacle, an embarassment.
The woman didn't know Michael Jackson other than an interview more than a dozen years prior.

On the other hand, Eunice Kennedy Shriver's funeral mass was private, by invitation only, for legitimate friends and family of Mrs. Shriver and her family... and Oprah was invited.

However, given the level of your posting, you might want to reconsider your abandonment of reading as a hobby.
