Dramatic Iceberg Collapses (VIDEO)

Huffington Post     First Posted: 09/27/09 06:12 AM ET   Updated: 05/25/11 02:55 PM ET

What could be more shocking then to see an iceberg melt before your eyes? We here at HuffPost Green realized that our story on Rick Sanchez's video of a collapsing iceberg in Greenland was just the tip of the iceberg in our increasingly warming world. Check out our slideshow of melting icebergs that were miraculously captured on video.

Watch this incredible raw footage of an iceberg collapse in Battle Harbour, Labrador, Canada.

It appears that "Greenland" has a number of possible derivations. From Wikipedia:

After settling there, he [Erik the Red] named the land Grœnland ("Greenland") in the hope the pleasant name would attract settlers.... Greenland was also called Gruntland ("Ground-land") and Engronelant (or Engroneland) on early maps. Whether green is an erroneous transcription of grunt ("ground"), which refers to shallow bays, or vice versa, is not known. The southern portion of Greenland (not covered by glacier) is indeed very green in the summer and was probably even greener in Erik's time during the Medieval Warm Period. The theory currently held to be most likely is that the etymological origin of 'Greenland' is "Hronland", which means "Land of the Whales" in ancient Norse. The waters around Greenland's southern tip are indeed full of whales. The words 'Hron' and 'Groen' sound alike, and when transcribed into Latin characters it is highly possible that the Icelandic Saga was changed from the original. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greenland

It seems old Erick did not deceive potential settlers. If he had, the first boatloads would have immediately sailed home and spread the word that Erick had duped them. End of scheme.

So...aren't icebergs SUPPOSED to melt?
11:43 AM on 08/31/2009
yep, but apparently they are melting faster, and refreezing slower than before

What was it that sank the oceanliner, the Titanic? Oh, it was an iceberg, a titanic iceberg. Just how in the world did that iceberg ever find its way into the north Atlantic Ocean? And what month did it probably launch itself into the ocean?

Using the logic of the global warming alarmists, we need to burn MORE fossil fuels and cut down MORE trees to warm things back up so we don't starve.

We've been seeing film of icebergs collapsing for a good thirty years, now. One of these, no matter how dramatic, is not necessarily a sign of global warming.
01:15 AM on 08/28/2009
Wow, if that doesn't convince people, nothing will. That ice melted, alright.

By the way, why was this frozen place ever named "Greenland?"

Be veg to stop climate change since livestock production is the main cause.

Dont confuse factory farming with local sustainable production of animal products. I used to group them all together and realized later how many positive benefits come from sustainably raising grass fed animals (manure, soil enrichment, processing of organic matter into compost, etc).

Just saying...they are not the same.

And anyways, deforestation is a much more serious cause. Plant trees and you can do no wrong.

And a huge driver of deforestation is raising animals for meat.
