BOSTON — Sen. Edward M. Kennedy began his final journey Thursday, first past landmark after landmark bearing his family's famous name and then to his slain brother's presidential library where mourners lined up by the thousands to bid farewell to him and an American political dynasty.

Crowds assembled along the 70-mile route that snaked from the family's compound in Hyannis Port to the John F. Kennedy Library and Museum, where his body lay in repose. More than 20,000 people waited in line to file past his closed casket and mark the end of a national political chapter that was equal parts triumph and tragedy.

Kennedy's widow, Vicki, who greeted well-wishers filing past the casket, said the outpouring was deeply moving for the family.

"I just want to thank them so much for coming this evening and showing love and support for my husband," she said. "It's a tremendous solace to all our family."

For many, it was hard to untangle Kennedy's larger-than-life role as statesman from his role as neighbor and local celebrity, whether he was taking a turn conducting the Boston Pops or throwing out the first pitch for the Red Sox.

"It was Teddy's home team. It just seemed appropriate to leave him the cap," said James Jenner, 28, placing a Sox cap he was wearing near the entrance to the library. "It symbolizes everything that he loved about his home state and everything he was outside the Senate."

The motorcade started in Hyannis Port, at the Cape Cod home where Kennedy's family held a private Mass. Eighty-five relatives traveled in the motorcade. They passed several sites that were significant to the senator, including St. Stephen's Church, where his mother, Rose, was baptized and her funeral Mass celebrated, and a Boston park he helped create that was named for his mother.

Among those making the trip were Kennedy's nieces Caroline, daughter of former President John F. Kennedy, and Maria Shriver, daughter of his late sister Eunice; and his son Patrick Kennedy, a Rhode Island congressman.

Mourners crowded the end of the barricaded road leading to the family compound before the motorcade departed.

Virginia Cain, 54, said she walked 2 miles from her summer home in Centerville so she could watch the procession and witness history.

"I can remember where I was when President Kennedy died, and I'll remember where I was when the senator left Hyannis Port," she said.

A bouquet of white and yellow lilies lay on the lawn of David Nylin's vacation rental near the Kennedy home, where a U.S. flag flew at half-staff in Kennedy's honor. Nylin, 38, said people had been stopping near his house to leave flowers since Kennedy died late Tuesday.

"The Kennedys and Hyannis and the Cape, they just kind of go hand in hand," he said.

On Main Street in downtown Hyannis, flags, flowers and personal notes lay at the base of a flagpole outside the John F. Kennedy Museum, where about two dozen people gathered.

Someone had placed an old Kennedy campaign sign with a new inscription: "God bless Ted, the last was first," referring to his ascension to political greatness after his two older brothers were assassinated.

Several enlarged photos showed events in Kennedy's life – meeting with Martin Luther King Jr., reading to a school girl. A rosary hung over a picture of Kennedy standing in his office.

Echoes of the Kennedy history were hard to miss as the motorcade traveled through the city.

Vicki Kennedy put her hand over her heart as the procession passed St. Stephen's. A crowd that had gathered there applauded, and niece Caroline and other family members acknowledged them with a wave from their cars.

"When a member of the Kennedy family passes, it's like family. It feels like family," said Jeanne Pagano, 54, who was on the sidewalk outside the church. "I really loved the man and the family. I loved them."

The motorcade also crossed the Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy Greenway, a park created by the Big Dig highway project, which Kennedy helped shepherd through the Senate. It paused at Faneuil Hall, where the historic bell rang 47 times – once for each of Kennedy's years in the Senate.

The procession also passed the Massachusetts Statehouse – with it life-size statue of John F. Kennedy, accessible to tourists Thursday for the first time since just after the Sept. 11 attacks – and a nearby building where Kennedy opened his first office as an assistant district attorney and where John Kennedy lived while running for Congress in 1946.

After passing the John F. Kennedy Federal Building in the city's Government Center complex, the motorcade headed to the library, where Kennedy's body will remain until his Saturday funeral.

Scott Howe, 46, and his 15-year-old son, Austin, from Laurel, Md., were among those gathering outside the library.

"He seemed to really care about his constituents," Scott Howe said. "The Kennedy family – despite the money they had, had a big streak of altruism."

The family planned an invitation-only private memorial service for Friday evening at the library.

All the living presidents were expected to attend the funeral Mass on Saturday at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Basilica – commonly known as the Mission Church – in Boston's working-class Mission Hill neighborhood. President Barack Obama is scheduled to deliver the eulogy.

Shortly before the Mass, 44 sitting senators and 10 former senators will be among a group of about 100 dignitaries who will pay their respects to Kennedy at the library before making their way to the church.

Included in the group is former Sen. Birch Bayh of Indiana, who pulled Kennedy from the wreckage of a small plane that crashed near Springfield, Mass., in June 1964. The pilot and a legislative aide were killed, and Kennedy suffered a broken back that caused him pain the rest of his life.

"The Impossible Dream," Kennedy's favorite song, from the musical "Man of La Mancha," will be played at one of the services, according to the person familiar with the arrangements.

The city may soon have one more Kennedy landmark. Planning is already under way for a building to house a new Edward M. Kennedy Institute for the Senate.

Kennedy will be buried Saturday evening near his assassinated brothers – former President Kennedy and former Sen. Robert F. Kennedy – at Arlington National Cemetery in northern Virginia.

I am not ready to say good-bye to the Kennedys. We have had them for 5 decades, this generation, that is. The loss is personal to all of us because what they did effected all of us, personally. I love them. I think that those in this next generation are probably thinking about taking the next step. I wish that Caroline would reconsider, and I would like to see Joe. But, there is a video that I came across of all of the next generation's possibilities and there are several whom I was not aware of. I hope that they do some hard thinking about their involvement, I hope that the love that is showed to them will encourage them. I am just not ready to have no Kennedy's in politics.

I can see the Democrats exploiting Senator Kennedy's death to push the healthcare bill down everyones throats. It's going to be worse than the Paul Wellstone memorial that turned into a political rally.

The democrats will not be exploiting Senator Kennedy's death if they now ramp up their cause. They will be honoring his life.

And speaking of exploitation, gee, seems to me every republican for the last 9 years could have had the middle name of 9/11. George 9/11 Bush, Dick 9/11/ Cheney, Donald 9/11 Rumsfield, John 9/11 McCain...and so on and so forth.

We'll see what Americans are most grateful to in the end. The "exploitation" of Senator Kennedy to achieve a country where health care is not the privilege of the well to do, or the exploitation of 9/11 to achieve a useless war that was sloppily executed and sapped our budget at the same time it allowed the real trouble in Afghanistan to boil over the top of the cauldron.

Sorry, but we were planning on ramming it through before he died.

And exploit his death to push health care through? I'm sure he wouldn't have it any other way! He would die for everyone to have, "Affordable, Quality health care!", since it was "The cause of my life!"

Good heavens, of course we will! Ted is the author of nationalized health care. Dodd said that he and Ted would be out on Ted's boat and Ted would be pounding on the boat, speaking loudly about how all people deserve to have healthcare. Dodd said the he told Teddy that it was just him there and he was in agreement! He cared from the bottom of his heart and we are going to carry the torch for him! Yes, he is the leader now. If he can die knowing that his death helped to get it passed, he would be happy forever, because he would know that he helped millions.........millions of people.

Sure, we are going to use his death. If you believe in a God, you might want to think about His timing in this......ya think that MAYBE God wants this to pass, too? hmmmmmmmmmmm?

Seeing some in the media, some posters here offering links to petitions, and hearing the Speaker of the House and Bob Byrd in the Senate come out and try to exploit Senator Kennedy's death by using it as a "sympathy push" for a very unpopular healthcare bill is shameful. It's very poor taste, no question about it. Kennedy would have died 10 months ago had he not had a great deal of wealth and influence to choose his own entire team of doctors. Had he been forced into the option Pelosi wants to force on other people, he'd not have made it past Spring. Kennedy's situation was not characteristic of the bill, so don't attiribute it to Kennedy's cause. This is a like a family who loses a dad, and when the kid grows restless and doesn't behave like the widow mom wants, it's like her telling the poor kid....if your father was alive and you acted like this, he'd be very sad. The bill needs to pass or fail on its own merits. Leave Kennedy's death out of it. What is most appropriate is for a national "Buy the Needy Healthcare Fund" in his name, with the liberal democrats leading the push. You will always get more contributions that way than by forcing people to give.

The fact is that after the death of JFK, Lyndon Johnson seized the opportunity of tremendous sympathy to push through tons of significant civil rights legislation. It might not have passed as quickly as it did had it not been for JFK's horrible death. So I say, Yes....use whatever means possible to pass health care legislation. It is not exploitation---it is the best way possible to honor the life of Ted Kennedy.

Watching the c-span coverage of the public viewing one cannot help but see Sen .Kennedy's impact on the lives of every cross section of Americans. They represent every ethnicity and all social classes... the true melting pot of America. If I was in Boston I would have to go...An amazing voice of the people laid to rest, it is a privilege for me to be part of the Kennedy's generation. One can only hope that the Kennedy Family with their sense of public service will stay active in politics and keep to their ideal belief that social justice is a right for every American.

I was surprised to see his interview with Roger Mudd today. He showed he was only human when he asnwered to the question: "Why do you want to be President?" After the third time, he said "becuase America has more any other natural resources than any other country". I about busted a gut. That was about the stupidest thing any politician ever said. Again, it did show he's human. And of course, as the liberal standard bearer, you gotta admit that's dumber then anything the liberals ever accused Palin or W saying. This country has not only lost a great Senator, they have lost a great man. He was the patriarch of the Kennedy family and I know he will be sorely missed by everyone. He was always there when needed by a neice or nephew. He was my senator and I will miss him. We have crossed paths and the last time was at Fanuiel Hall. He was an approachable person and very kind to people he met. He was indeed the "Lion of the Senate". Personally, I will miss him but I know he is in a better place. May you rest in peace, Senator Kennedy. You have certainly earned it. Thank you so much for all the years of service you gave representing Massachusettes.

It's important to remember Senator Kennedy for what he was, and not make him larger in death than he was in life, He was after all, an accomplished Senator and lawyer, who was admired by his constituents. Fellow liberals admitted he had some flaws, and when a liberal says that, it's pretty bad, After all, Kennedy was a drunk, reckless womanizer and selfish arrogant elitist who was responsible for the death of someone due soley to his selfish overindulgence. He assassinated the character of many who crossed him, so much that Bill Clinton was terrified of crossing Kennedy. But he was a devoted family man and someone who was very gererous in offering up other people's money to help what he called the working American. We'll see just how generous he was when and if he leaves his fortune to those he sates are less fortunate. If he doesn't, his life will be for naught. May Ted Kennedy rest in peace and may God be with his family.

I truly wish the senator would be remembered for finally distributing the vast Kennedy holdings to those less fortunate than them. One surely did, Eunice, for those with physical & mental disabilities she was a tireless hero, her family continues to devote time and resources to a that. I will remember the senator for exactly what SpecOpsGuy1963 wrote.
