I visited here to poke fun, but I must admit when I had my wisdom teeth pulled at 23 I recall to this day how badly it messed me up. That was 32 years ago. No psych hold, though. Back then they would let you lay cured up on the floor wimpering

True. I had wisdom teeth pulled not quite two years ago. I looked like a chipmunk and I couldn't eat well for a while, but psychologically, I was okay. But I couldn't imagine having wisdom teeth pulled and then working long hours on the job.

I've got the perfect excuse for just about every embarrassing situation: drunken car crash, caught with transvestite prostitute, rehab stint, etc.

It's basically completely unverifiable, it's easy to dodge any deeper questions into it ("it's too painful to talk about", or "he/she was a private person, and out of respect to the family . . . "), and everybody relates to grief.

Ok, it might not work for getting caught with a transvestite prostitute, but for all other embarrassing situations, it's gold!

Why does she need to come up with an excuse?? Why is it still considered embarassing to be hospitalized for a mental health problem? If she were hospitalized for any other type of illness no excuses would be necessary. Stigma abouds.

A person can only be put on a psychiatric hold (referred to as a "5150") for very specific reasons. These include being a danger to self (being suicidal), a danger to others (homicidal), or gravely disabled (unable to manage basic care for oneself). As much as these celebrities would like us to believe their spin, a person is not ever placed on a psychiatric hold for "exhaustion" or any of the other currently popular euphemisms.

A person who is placed on a 5150 needs professional help and this should not be dismissed lightly. Ms Barton has a well documented history as "a party girl" and for many people, excessive use of drugs and alcohol can lead to a mental and physical breakdown, suicidal ideation, or the inability to care for oneself. I have no idea what Ms Barton's actually psychological status is, but I am getting very tired of the excuses celebrities (and their spinmeisters) produce after a psychiatric hospitalization. Although they are entitled to their privacy, other young girls get the wrong idea and begin to see these hospitalizations in a romanticized way. These are not the lovely sanitoriums in the Swiss Alps from movies in times past -- psychiatric hospitals usually smell bad and have people at all levels of mental decompensation.

It would be very refreshing to hear one of these so-called role models actually tell it like it is rather than as they wish it could be.
