The New Yorker has hired Amelia Lester, most recently an editor at the Paris Review, as their new managing editor.

Despite the astonishment, it's not as rare as you would think that very young people gain prestigious editorships in magazines. Look at Jane Pratt, Atoosa Rubenstein, Andrew Sullivan, Peter Beinart and several others who got editorships in their 20's. Ross Douthat just got his own column in the NYT at 29.
Generally these jobs chew people up and spit them out, so whether they last or not is another issue.

Why do people assume that she is not qualified? She sounds qualified, and she probably is not getting the salary of someone with more years of experience.
I have learned after decades of working with others that years of experience does not confirm expertise.
Why is it "envy" to mention that as a wh y te female she is the beneficiary of Affirm ative Action? She is not as qual ified as other out of work journalists (there are many). If she were black would there not be 1000 posts on this website about AA?

Um I would think to get that position one would need at least 10-15 yrs of solid experience. Maybe even more, well print media is on it's last limb so I guess they can try something new.

Hoping it's not true, as I just re-subscribed after years of hating the "new" New Yorker. Apparently the same virus that has been destroying Hollywood for the last two decades has infected the literary world as well. Sigh.

The New Yorker used to be my favorite magazine. I read it cover to cover in the nineties. They had a big shakeup that led to some people quitting in protest - something about appealing more to the mass populace. It has never been the same since, but I still subscribe and read it some, not like before.
The cartoon contest which was supposed to get lots of average people interested is just silly.
I expect things to go downhill from here. It's very sad.
I'm sure mom or dad is someone of prominence. Most people work a lifetime to achieve what she was handed at 26.
This is my suspicion, as well. Nepotism is alive and well in America, after all.

This is the kind of crap that's going on where I work. Inexperienced know-nothings who kowtow to authority put in charge of seasoned workers. Predictably, everyone suffers under their mismanagement.
Cancelled my subscription this afternoon. A 26-year-old with no life experience isn't an editor, it's a bad joke. What happened to their board to let this happen?

Editor is just a title. Managing editor especially is a lot of grunt work. It's not as glamorous as you would think. Good luck to her.
