Ang Lee's Movies: Which Is Your Favorite? (PHOTOS, POLL)

Huffington Post     First Posted: 09/29/09 06:12 AM ET   Updated: 05/25/11 02:55 PM ET

'Taking Woodstock,' Ang Lee's loving portrait of the behind-the-scenes buildup to the 1969 music festival, opened Friday. Unsurprisingly, it looks like nothing he has done before.

You can see pictures from the 'Taking Woodstock' premiere here.

Lee's remarkably peripatetic career has resulted in movies that, Eastern or Western, period or contemporary, are sensitive, sweet and never redundant. Which is your favorite?

Run with the Devil is an excellent movie, and its obscurity is a great injustice. It is the only new approach to the Civil War since "The Birth of a Nation". Please try to find it and watch it. You will be glad you did.

Ride With The Devil is a favorite of mine. From the scenery, to the dialogue and dialects, he seemed to capture the place and time. It felt genuine.

The Ice Storm is such an amazing movie with such an amazing cast. One of my favorites,

I just noticed something . . . doing a gay movie can be fatal. First, River Phoenix does "My Own Private Idaho", and then Heath Ledger does "Brokeback Mountain".

Robin Williams, of "The Birdcage" fame, narrowly escaped death recently.

If I was Sean Penn, I'd buy a rabbit's foot.

It wasn't a doing a "gay movie" as much as it was doing drugs that killed River and Heath. In robin's case, it was his heart, not the movie.

I hope you were being silly when you made this statement. You can't be serious.

Thanks, Roger Ebert, for causing me to rent The Wedding Banquet and bringing Ang Lee to my attention. I'd have to say Crouching Tiger is my favorite, but it's close among several, including Brokeback and S&S.

Hulk + Crouching Tiger Hidden Draggon for me

Lee's Hulks was leagues better than the crap from last year

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon #1 , Sense and Sensibility #2, and Brokeback Mountain #3 - I haven't seen the others, so I can't judge those. But I own those three on DVD. Watch them all the time.

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon is my #1, with Brokeback Mountain #2. The performance by Heath Ledger in Brokeback was fantastic and never did materialize to hinder his too short career. The homophobes seriously derided Ang Lee for making that film but I consider it a triumph. I believe Ang Lee's personal journey directly affects his film direction and does nothing but improve it! He is a terrific director!

Ang Lee's movies are so overpowered by his massive egotism, they're altogether worth avoiding.

He does have a really good cinematographer working for him, though.

Pretty pictures, godawfully heavyhanded messaging.

do you want fries with that?

I'm with you. Overrated. Brokeback mountain was ruined by the heavy, heavy overmessaging. Gay cowboys. Great, we got it. He knew hollywood would love it and they took the bait hook line and sinker. Most over rated film of its time. Crouching tiger was also a disappointment.

I thought it was just me on Brokeback. I think part of it was you couldn't not like the movie without being accused of being homophobic. To me it was just a sappy melodramatic love story. I guess its good that gay men get to be in sappy melodramatic love story movies now as well as hetero couples but it was still pretty boring. I thought crouching dragon was kind of cool though. And I also agree the cinematography is what gives his movies such a distinctive feel but you need more than that to make a great movie.

Eat, Drink, Man, Woman, followed by Sense and Sensibility, and then Lust, Caution. This is strictly a matter of personal preference. The man is great.

"Brokeback Mountain"

Seriously, how can you top that?

Unbelievably horrible, sorry.

Not a fan.

It isn't one of my favorites, but obviously a lot of people loved it. I didn't care for Crouching Tiger, either, but that is just me, again. Some people like chocolate, some people like vanilla - it's all a matter of taste, I guess.

"Crouching Tiger", the "Eat, Drink, Man, Woman" (which has also been made into the excellent "Tortilla Soup" changing the locale from Taiwan to Mexican-Americans in an American city).

I love Ang Lee! He's a skilled storyteller, has a very diverse repertoire, and consistently directs wonderful films. Said of "The Ice Storm": "Rick Moody, the author of the novel was so pleased with the film he sobbed through the end credits." (source: IMDb.com). Wow! That's says it all.

"Storyteller" is apt. He's more than a director and his range is amazingly vast.
