Mail Online:

It may look like a piece of honeycomb, but this lattice-shaped image is the first ever close-up view of a single molecule.

Scientists from IBM used an atomic force microscope (AFM) to reveal the chemical bonds within a molecule.

The GOP, not satisfied with photographic evidence, have insisted on seeing the molecule's birth certificate as proof.

I am just fascinated with that picture. Looking at inner space is just as fascinating as looking at outer space!

Quite amazing. An inverse universe in itself. And, what if they one day discover mini people living down there amongst the quarks and gluons .. having the same lib vs pub squabbles that we have here above ground. Partisan unrest is universal it seems. Imagine a sub-atomic version of Glenn. A guark?

I have imagined that sense I was a teen. I'm now 40 and I still daydream about that. It can turn in to mind meltdown.

Pretty cool, no doubt. The only thing I find sad about it is that IBM is the ones who did it. I don't like how that company treats their workers or the fact that so many of their US-based employees have been laid off and replaced with foreigners. Kudos on the accomplishment, I just wish someone else had done it.

I used to work for IBM as an operating system kernel developer. They had me train a guy in Bangalore as my "assistant", then they laid me off and brought him over on an H1-B. They also wanted me to cover up design flaws by issuing patches that wouldn't really fix the problem and telling customers they would, and they pushed me out the door while I was spreading ideas for a redesign around the office.

Just goes to show, whenever someone asks someone else to act dishonestly, they'll eventually be on the receiving end of dishonest or dishonorable behavior by the same individual, or company in this case. You know the saying: What goes around comes around.

Unfortunately, what we see on the Jay Leno show is more reflective of our young than I like. Our education and commitment to our young is not good in that we are so profit driven. We don't even want to eliminate that concern so that folks who are scientist can focus on developing technology. We spend weeks determining which coverage we should have while at work. We also are continuously looking at our investments to insure we don't lose our savings. We are just too profit driven. Sorry for the negative.

I truly as orgasmic over the picture of the Pentacene molecule. The spell checker doesn't like the word, which is to my point of we have no interest in basic science in our society.

Good day for science. Space Shuttle Discovery celebrated her 25th birthday today by docking with the International Space Station to deliver 8,000 pounds of experiment racks to finally achieve full scientific productivity aboard the 700-ton orbital outpost.

NASA has also produced a document summarizing all the science that has already been done on the ISS while it was being built, despite the multi-year construction delay and minimal two-person crew following the Columbia disaster:

http://forum.nasaspaceflight.com/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=18453.0;attach=161443

Now with a full-time crew of six and three fully-equipped laboratory modules, the ISS is shifting into high gear to fulfill its promise.

We live in a world where for too many people, life is little more than the pursuit of money. It's nice to know that at least some people acknowledge the essential part of the human condition that is the pursuit of truth.

Molecular structures like protiens, but not an individual molecule. There are ways to determine spin and such as a way to figure out structure and rotation states. but it isn't the same as an actual photo graph. This is the smallest they have gone so far.

molecules have been imaged before.

This is finer resolution, with less measurement caused aberration, than ever before, which is cool, But oversold.

I'm only a historian, so I can't say much about the science involved. We have made a great deal of progress in science and technology in my lifetime, but much less in solving social, political and economic problems. All that is lagging far behind all these fantastic developments that allow us to see planets in other solar systems and are also making big leaps in understanding the microscopic universe.

That's what has always impressed me, how uneven progress is in this world.
