Vicki Kennedy

Ted Kennedy married Victoria Anne Reggie in 1992. Kennedy and his closest friends called his decision to ask her out "the smartest move of his life." From the New York Times:

The senator proposed to her in January 1992 at a performance of "La Boheme" at the Metropolitan Opera in New York -- a love of opera was a passion they shared. They married that July at his home in McLean, Va., in front of about 30 family members.

And that was the beginning of the extraordinary relationship -- a love story as well as a political partnership -- that would define the final years of Kennedy's life, both personally and professionally. It brought him a happiness, his friends said, that had long eluded him, seeing him through until the end, and even now, as Vicki Kennedy presides at the first of his public memorials in Boston and prepares for his burial at Arlington National Cemetery.

Vicki Kennedy also had a savvy political mind that was a valuable asset for her husband, the Times writes:

Mrs. Kennedy was instrumental in the campaign's creation of a series of devastating advertisements that challenged Mr. Romney's proclamations about his record as a venture capitalist in creating jobs in recession-battered Massachusetts. The spots focused on the workers at the Ampad stationery factory in Marion, Ind., where Mr. Romney's company, Bain Capital, had eliminated jobs, reduced wages and discarded the union contract.

Two of the late Ted Kennedy's best friends in the Senate said on Sunday that the Massachusetts senator's widow, Victoria Kennedy, would make a great replacement for him.

"She is a very brilliant lawyer," said Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) on CNN's State of the Union. "She's a very solid individual. She certainly made a difference in Ted's life, let me tell you. And I have nothing but respect for her."

Sen. Chris Dodd (D-Conn.) echoed that sentiment:

"We talk frequently. Whatever Vicki wants to do, I'm in her corner," said Dodd. "She knows that. She has expressed to me her own reluctance to do that. But she could change her mind. And if she did I'm for it. I think she'd be great, I think Orrin's right, she brings talent and ability to it... we can certainly use her in the Senate. But leave it up to her. She has a lot on her mind right now. And, frankly, I leave it up to her decision-making process."

Vicki Kennedy has reportedly said she doesn't want to succeed her late husband, though observers say the seat is hers should she change her mind. From Time Magazine:

The question is what Vicki wants. Victoria Reggie Kennedy, the Senator's widely admired widow, is from a Louisiana political family. She has stayed out of Massachusetts politics, and word leaked during the Senator's illness that she wasn't interested in succeeding him. But she would be an overwhelming favorite for the seat if she wanted it, and until she publicly makes her wishes clear, nothing will be clear.

Massachusetts governor Deval Patrick, who may get a chance to appoint a temporary successor, said on Friday that Vicki Kennedy would not be a candidate.

"She is not interested," he said, according to the Associated Press. "She is grieving the loss of her husband and the leader of that extraordinary family."

Why not one of Ted's grandchildren, which would keep this "Camelot" nonsense going even longer?!Long live monarchy in Massachusetts!

You're not even in the right branch-- a monarch is an executive.

The only Kennedy to be elected to the executive branch was Jack.

Bobby served IN the executive branch as AG, but then entered the legislative branch as Senator.

Ted spent his entire career in the legislative branch-- where he was elected many times because here in Massachusetts, the people generally liked the job he was doing. (And you should have seen some of the people the GOP ran against him).

Whether or not the law is changed for a temporary appointment, we the people of Massachusetts (not anywhere else) will be choosing a new Senator on January 19, 2010.

You are obviously upset about the fact that the Kennedys are popular here in Massachusetts. To which I can only reply-- tough luck.

Unlesss you are from Massachusetts, you have NO SAY in the matter.

See to your own Senators and Reps-- we don't tell you who to choose-- please extend the same courtesy to us.

Oh My God ! if she changes her mind and accepts the position just the short period of time before a succesor can be named or elected, the Republicans would loose their minds ! that would be a hoot to watch ! the total melt down. Please Vicky ! ! ! change your mind and take the position just for a little while.

If she is from the same Reggie family, from Crowley in Acadia Parish Louisiana, that I just read about then I can understand her not wanting to fill his seat. It seems that family has had its share of controversy also. Though we are sad to see Senator Kennedy pass away it is somewhat of a relief that all the drama is finally over. Let's move on. If his seat is to be filled do it with someone else.

Hey Liberals ( who cares what republicans think) something is not right about this. Why are some of the worst corporate tools in the universe (NYT, dodd and orrin hatch for example) pushing her forward all of the sudden? Does anyone think the insurance industry has something to do with it?

We have read the article. She is not interested. But a woman can change her mind. I hope she changes her mind and rightfully take her deceased husband's place in the Senate.

What do you mean by "rightfully." No woman has the automatic "right" to take over her husband's elected office if he dies. There is no such entitlement.

She has no "right" to her husband's seat. Point out to me where it says that in the Constitution. As it is, the politicians are already trying to bend Massachusetts law. I am not a citizen of Massachusetts, and neither are these politicians making the suggestion. You may be one, but it is up to the state of Massachusetts, starting with the governor, and no one else to decide what they are going to do.

Actually, it is up to the Legislature to change the law-- the governor has already said he would sign such a law if it were passed.

I DO live in Mass., and want to be fully represented during the next five months.

However, I take Mrs. Kennedy at her word when she says she is not interested.

I've indicated elsewhere that former Governor Dukakis would be a good choice (in representing the wishes of the citizens)

Either way, there WILL be an election early next year-- and we will be able to make our choice then.

So far there has been little discussion about who would even run.

LEAVE HER ALONE!! This beautiful, gracious lady just lost her husband and her love, she needs time to grieve his loss and come to terms with it. I think it's shameful the MSM has been gnawing at this question like a dog with a bone with the help of these stupid, insensitive Senators. Let it go.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 09:40 PM on 08/30/2009

Rightfully? What's up with that? The woman is a lawyer, has done not one thing, other than marry Ted Kennedy, all the whilst her Daddy directed from the sidelines. Yes, I'm sure she loved Ted dearly, but....

She can live her life to her own liking, but being appointed a Senator, not so much!

She's a Kennedy. I suspect those of you who feel otherwise must be single of not married for any length of time. I'm surprised all the Bible-thumper aren't spealing up about this. I guess Barbara Bush and Laura Bush aren't Bushes. I guess Cindy McCain is not a McCain nor Mrs Hatch a Hatch. I agree this is up to the voters of MA. I say go for a win, change the law. The GOP wouldn't hesitate to do the same thing. I'd bet the farm on it.

Fine. TEMPORARY replacement. We can all be sure she would vote as her husband would have.

Could we draft her? I really wish she'd fill in. Let her finish his term, then let the voters decide.

Yes he really did rob the cradle. I'm quite certain this brainy young woman who graduated summa cum laude from Tulane Law University and after practicing law for 18 years had no clue that this man was robbing her from her cradle.

Stupid b@stard.

I believe 5 months is too long to be without a senator. After hearing Teddy Jr. talk about his Dad at the funeral, I think he should run for office and I hope Dukakis becomes the temporary.

I find it odd that many in the public seem to want to push certain people into public office, who, indeed, may have NO desire for same. Meanwhile, that pix of Vicky ain't so great---now, really----stop insulting her by showing------on other hand, maybe that's the plan---

You probably wouldn't look so great either after what she has been going through, especially the last two days of non-stop mourning.

Nah, it's time for a change. I live here, I've voted for Ted Kennedy six times, I applaud his service & respect his family, but this is not a hereditary post.

In case you haven't noticed, you are going to get change-- one way or the other.

no matter who ends up as our next Senator, he or she will have nowhere near the clout or prestige (or senority) of the late Senator.

There is no way Sen. Kennedy can be "replaced"-- only succeeded.

The argument seems to be that a) being a Kennedy is a prerequisite for a MA Senate seat or b) being a Kennedy is a bar to having an MA Senate seat.

Me, I'll trust the people of MA to know their own best interests and vote for the best representative they are offered regardless of name.

According to everyone who knew Ted and Vicki personally, felt that their marriage was a good one. It certainly seems that way in observing the last 2 or 3 days. I also read that they planned and discussed everything that culminated in the last 3 days as the nation watched. So, I feel certain they discussed the possibility of Vicki filling his place in the senate.

I wish she would be offered and would accept the appointment. She is probably better equipped to know exactly what Ted Kennedy wanted for health care. The country needs her as an extension of her husband on this issue alone. Perhaps the reason they had such a good relationship is because they were of like mind and shared feelings about their country and their priorities. She looks strong to me.

There is no appointment; the succession law in Massachusetts requires a special election to fill the seat. Just before his death, Sen. Kennedy sent a letter to the Governor and legislative leaders asking them to change the succession law to allow for an appointment. In his letter Kennedy said that he supported the current succession law, which gives voters the power to fill a US Senate vacancy, but the state and country need two Massachusetts senators.

“I strongly support that law and the principle that the people should elect their senator,’’ Kennedy wrote. “I also believe it is vital for this Commonwealth to have two voices speaking for the needs of its citizens and two votes in the Senate during the approximately five months between a vacancy and an election.’

The current succession law was only enacted in 2004--so it's not steeped in tradition.

If it's consistent with what she wants to do at this difficult time in her life, surely there is some way to get her visible and talking about this, even if she's not a Senator. I think undoubtedly Mass. will change the law and appoint an automatic vote, but there are other ways for her to be visible and vocal about this if that's what she wants to do.

I'd like to see her run for the office. My understanding is that being the interim stand-in precludes that possibility. Maybe Ted Jr. would be a good stand-in. I hope the Kennedys continue to serve the American people in the Senate (or any other office, for that matter) for as long as there is a Kennedy family.

I don't think that will happen here in Mass. because of the popularity of the Kennedys.

Any GOP ad would backfire and hurt them --badly-- here.

The ad would not be for the benefit of Mass. It would be for the parts of the country (NC, VA, IN, FL) where the president won when he should not have. Kennedy bashing by GOP is a winner in many other parts of the country.
