Wall Street Journal:

Jane Angelich used to joke about her husband, Mark, going bald. Then with one faulty flick of the wrist, she made it happen.

Mr. Angelich had begun cutting his own hair to save money. His wife offered to trim a spot in the back he couldn't reach. So she picked up an electric razor, "put a little too much oomph into it," and carved out a "giant chunk" of hair. The fix: She shaved his entire head.

I have not been to a barber for more than 15 years. I was surprised when my cousin told me a couple of months ago that a haircut now costs $25!!!
The last time somebody cut my hair I think I paid $10 with tip.
My son and I both get buzz cuts ( I cut my own because my wife is worthless) every 2 to three weeks. The beauty of it, no appointment no waiting - 30 minutes each including shower time.
The clippers cost me $90 (don't buy the cheap Wahl crap - try Oster-pro) and still good after 10 years.
Oh, flobees are just abominations - stay away.

Savings of about $500+ year in my estimation.

Now if I can convince my wife and daughter to try the home salon - that will be neat trick, but I choose my battles wisely.

I have been cutting my own hair since the mid-60s. I came upon an article in WOMAN'S DAY then explaining the "One-Cut Method." One gets a pair of hair scizzors, makes a pony tail at the level of the bangs you want on your forehead, affixes a rubber band and go: SNIP! Since I have curly hair, what I ended up with was a perfect layer-cut.

I used to have hair dressers run up to me at discoteques, (remember those), asking, "Who does your hair?" They were a bit upset when they learned I did it myself with the "One-Cut Method." My hair is so curly most hairdressers blow cutting it half the time and I want to wear a paper bag on my head for a week or two. I only blow it 1/4 the time so I do it myself. (P.S. - The money I save not spending at the hairdresser gets more than spent at the Dog Groomer. Hahahahahahahah!!!! And they look GOOD!)

Just for the record--I still get a lot of compliments.

I've been cutting my own hair for the last 8 years. Granted, it's long and straight so not particularly challenging. But it sure beats having to pay and worse yet, paying someone NOT to listen to your instructions.

I'm with you, I've been cutting my own hair (long and straight also) for over 20 yrs or my one sister cuts it for me. The last time I paid for a cut, it was so uneven that I had to fix it anyway. I cut my husbands hair for thirty yrs now and used to cut my sons, though my daughter was different, and I did take her in, but then we made it part of a "special day" for her when I did.

I have been cutting hair for my family of 4 for over 10 years. The guys (3 of them) all wear buzz cuts and I have a lot of natural curl (you can hide a lot of mistakes in curly hair). I color my own hair too. Although, my niece is getting married next month and I think I might blow $20 and get a professional cut!
