New York wants to know if you're "pouring on the pounds."

On Monday, the Health Department rolled out their new ad campaign targeting liquid calories. In an attempt to get New Yorkers to think twice about what and how much they drink, the ads go right for the gross-out effect, showing soda and other sugary drinks turning into revolting frothy chunks of fat.

Posters of the ads will be put up throughout the subway system, making your packed, un-air conditioned commute all the more pleasant.

As a registered dietitian I emphasize with my clients the importance of balance and moderation...I tell people "Ok, if you want an eight ounce beverage then eliminate one of the bread rolls and butter at dinner." Scare ads like the one from the New York Health Department create fear, negativity, and place the responsibility on someone else. It may be a better use of tax-payer funds to focus on more positive messages and engaging corporations to help overcome the obesity epidemic in our country. The obesity problem is just too complex to blame any one industry! We need to be more responsible of our own actions, and learn to eat healthy and be more active.

food/soda makers should be forced to put the REAL truth and consequences on thier products or forced to make the bad choices less available, fix the food chain and you will make a huge dent in health care.serious problems do call for serious solutions.

Take perfectly good water.
Put it in a container that will last hundreds of years as trash. Add sugar, air and other chemicals--most of them bad for you. Market it as something vital to your lifestyle, without which you will be uncool. Rape the environment in countless ways as you meet production from raw materials through marketing to delivery.
Explain to me again why this ad campaign is not appropriate?

SINGLE PAYER NOW. All People should watch the interview below of Wendell Potter, former CIGNA executive. Please Re-Post this entire comment on every related health care story on HuffPost. We need to inform people. Thanks. http://www.pbs.org/moyers/journal/07102009/watch2.html He speaks the truth. We need congress to vote for a SINGLE PAYER PLAN. Right now, the insurance companies are salivating at the prospect of having the 50 million un-insured to be mandated to buy health insurance. Wake Up People! Do Something! Please watch this video interview of Wendell Potter and then contact your congressman/senator , urging them to support a Single Payer Plan. Also, feel free to copy and re-post the video link below and/or my message and place on all comment boards on HuffPost. We need to get more and more people to watch this interview and effect change. Currently, the Corporate Beaurocrats and their Lobby are taking over town hall meetings and influencing the general public to be scared of a SINGLE PAYER PLAN. We need to take control of this debate and show the Real Truth. If you haven't seen Bill Moyers' interview with Wendell Potter, former PR executive for CIGNA, I strongly recommend it: http://www.pbs.org/moyers/journal/07102009/watch2.html

If I was manufacturing diet soda I might be offended by a poster telling people not to drink soda. Other than that, it's a very positive step.

If this campaign is successful, it will be the most cost effective contribution to healthcare in the USA for a long time.

No complaints here --- while we are on the subject -- show X-rays of smoker's lungs and their teeth and how about the amount of smoke in babies' nurseries in a smoker' house!

I see nothing wrong with extremism in ads designed to keep people healthy. There are quite disgusting ads to prevent people from smoking. You can't sugar-coat stuff. Americans need to stop being coddled and face some realities.
