Same-Sex Marriages Begin In Vermont

Gay Marriage

DUXBURY, Vt. — After 17 years together, Bill Slimback and Bob Sullivan couldn't wait another minute to get married. So they didn't.

With Vermont's new law allowing same-sex marriage only a minute old, they tied the knot in a midnight ceremony at a rustic lodge, becoming one of the first couples to legally wed under a law that took effect at midnight Monday.

Dressed in suits, saying their vows under a large wall-mounted moose head, the two Whitehall, N.Y., men promised their love, exchanged rings and held hands during a modest 17-minute ceremony. Moose Meadow Lodge co-owner Greg Trulson, who's also a Justice of the Peace, presided.

"It feels wonderful," said Slimback, 38, an out-of-work Teamster who is taking Sullivan's last name as his own. "It's a day I've been long waiting for, and a day I truly honestly thought would never come."

Slimback said he and Sullivan, 41, have long wanted to cement their relationship with a wedding, but since they couldn't legally marry in New York they chose to wed even before Vermont's gay marriage era officially dawned.

Vermont is one of five states that now allow same-sex couples to marry. Massachusetts, Connecticut and Iowa are the others. New Hampshire's law takes effect Jan. 1, 2010.

Vermont, which invented civil unions in 2000 after a same-sex couple challenged the inequality of state marriage statutes, was a mecca for gay couples who to that point had no way to officially recognize their relationships.

Since then, other states have allowed gay marriage, as did Vermont, which in April became the first state to legalize gay marriage through a legislative decree and not a court case.

Some couples – including many who obtained civil unions in Vermont – plan to return to the state to get married. But most are in no rush. City and town officials say only a handful of licenses had been issued to same-sex couples in anticipation of Tuesday's start.

"We've waited a long time to do this – basically, our whole lives," Slimback said Monday. "We've been waiting for a chance to actually solidify it," he said. He and Sullivan said they never wanted to obtain a civil union because they believe that's a kind of second-class recognition.

Meanwhile, Vermont-based Ben & Jerry's Homemade Ice Cream is marking the occasion in typically sweet fashion. They're symbolically renaming their "Chubby Hubby" flavor "Hubby Hubby" for the month.

Congratulations Vermonters. You led the way with civil unions, now you join us in Massachusetts in marriage equality. I will be more glad than ever to visit, and to stay married to my husband as we travel there.

LGBT Americans ARE Tax Paying Citizens MANY WITH CHILDREN and FAMILIES......LGBT Americans are NOT ALIENS....they are Our Fireman,Policemen,Drs,Nurses,teachers...mothers,fathers,brothers and sisters...OUR Family Members. LGBT Americans are NOT just thier sex lives sir.....just like heterosexuals are NOT just thier sex lives.....Marriage is a Commitment from the Heart & Soul...Interesting how LGBT Americans are FIGHTING for something so hard...something that Heterosexuals TAKE for GRANTED ie: Divorce, remarry, divorce, remarry etc etc.....there are Gay cpls wgho've been together 5,10-15,20yrs or more.....now thats commitment! There is NO Pre-requisite that Children Must be bred of married cpls..none! Also, you do NOT have to be religious to be married....
Religious Faith is a CHOICE..yes a choice...being an LGBT citizen is NOT a choice...you are born that way....99.9% of Gay citzens ARE Born to Heterosexual parents. Why don't you worry about the Homeless,or Soup kitchens that need help and food, or about the 100's of Mainer's who will NEED assistance PAYING thier HEAT bills this winter? No, you are too busy feeding the monster of In-equality and religious Tyranny. Growing up in the 60's, I was raised to keep my religion to myself, and within my church.

So VERMONT is the 1 STATE in our "union" where gay's can pay their taxes without experiencing that sickening feeling that their constitutional rights are denied.

As for the other 49 - taxation is immoral and unconstitutional, and there is NO motivation or obligation to comply with the I.R.S. On the other hand, heterosexuals should be paying their taxes in full.

Another reason to be proud of my home state. Now, if only New York could get it's act together.

There will no doubt be hold out states for many years. Certainly don't expect to see equal rights in the South anytime soon. It's now time for some of the larger blue states, California and New York for starters, to catch up with New England.

The tide is turning. It is turning. A good day for Vermonters to be at the forefront of this important issue.

The Westboro Baptist Church people came to Montpelier this morning to try and spray bile over this beautiful day. Started at the high school, moved on to the State House, then to City Hall.
Vermonters responded the way we do best: a bake sale in front of the State House to benefit GLBT causes. I'm savoring an extraordinary chocolate-chip cookie. I'll have the brownie at lunch.

Have you ever been to Vermont? Do you know the demographics of the state? It is quite possibly the most progressive state in the Union. They elected a self-described socialist for senator (Bernie Sanders). They invented Civil Unions. They're too busy eating Ben & Jerry's, hiking and actually enjoying life to sit around and hate gay people. Believe me, the number of people from Vermont who would be upset enough about same-sex marriage to move out could all fit in the same U-Haul van.
