MISSOULA, Mont. — Gray wolf hunting was set to begin in the Northern Rockies, even as a federal judge eyed a request to stop the killing of the predators just four months after they were removed from the endangered species list.

U.S. District Judge Donald Molloy said Monday he would rule as quickly as he could on a last-minute injunction sought by environmental and animal welfare groups opposed to the hunts in Idaho and Montana.

Hunters were poised to head into the field Tuesday in Idaho, where a quota allowed as many as 220 wolves to be killed. Montana's season is set to begin Sept. 15, with a quota of 75 wolves.

Missoula hunter Mac McLaughlin attended Monday's court hearing then left to buy his hunting tag, saying he was tired of the wolves attacking elk. He intended to use an elk call to lure wolves.

"If the opportunity comes up, you bet I'll shoot one," he said. "There's got to be a balance and our game populations have taken a terrible beating."

More than 9,000 hunters in Idaho already have bought tags allowing them to kill a wolf. Tags went on sale Monday in Montana.

Wolves were removed from the endangered species list in Idaho and Montana in May, with management of the animals transferred to the state wildlife agencies.

Doug Honnold of the environmental law firm Earthjustice said wolves remained at risk because the states had insufficient safeguards to ensure their safety.

Story continues below

"It's the endangered species that need to be protected, not the states' rights to kill wolves," Honnold said during the hearing.

Michael Eitel, representing the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, said the agency would keep monitoring the wolves and step in to return the species to the endangered list if warranted.

"The Northern Rocky Mountain wolves are doing very well," Eitel said. "Yes there might be wolves that are killed, but that will not affect the population in Idaho and Montana."

Wolves once roamed North America but by the 1930s had been largely exterminated outside Alaska and Canada. An estimated 1,650 of the animals now live in the Northern Rockies – the result of a contentious $30 million reintroduction program that began in 1995.

Today, the debate centers on whether that population will remain viable if hunting is allowed. That population is now five times the original recovery goal set in the 1990s.

Wyoming was carved out of the territory where wolves were removed from the endangered list.

That prompted Honnold to claim the government had "flip-flopped" on a prior policy against making endangered species decisions based on political boundaries.

In court, Eitel acknowledged his agency changed its position on the issue but urged Judge Molloy to accept its latest interpretation of the law.

Molloy appeared doubtful. "How am I supposed to make judgment as to which of their positions to give deference to?" he asked.

Molloy gave no indication how he might rule on the injunction request. State wildlife officials said the hunts would proceed pending the ruling.

Last year, Molloy sided with environmentalists in a similar case.

As a result, the federal government kept about 300 wolves in Wyoming on the endangered list.

Humans have to keep the wolves in check in a responsible manner, because unless we do the wolves will overbreed. We are the top predators, and we have to act with great care and concern to do the right thing.

I know many humans need something or someone to worship, but you could make a better choice than me. You could make offerings to an eggplant, for example.

since the wolf population has not only met the standard initially set but exceeded it 5 fold why is there this complaint about restarting the hunt? When the goal post keeps getting moved people will lose faith in the system and begin to ignore it.

Okay, now I am totally convinced that the only solution is to GO VEGAN. That way there will be no need for these hunters to complain about their livestock because they will not have any livestock!

you can be vegan all you want that doesn't affect hunters.

Any true hunter will not make a k..ill unless they are going to eat their k..ill. Anyone who hunts something they are not going to eat, is not a hunter.

You said it CR46 and simply put. Its as simple as that don't kill anything your not going to eat. That is the law of nature and the only way it works period. Im a hunter and have been saying that my entire hunting life.

And any true farmer would kill a predator that was hunting his livestock.

Do you like seeing elk?
Do you like seeing deer?
Do you like seeing wolves?
How about ducks?
How about pheasants/bighorn/sheep?

All were in big trouble do to MARKET hunting. Guess what happened, hunters paid and worked to save them. We self regulated our hunting, trapped animals from good areas and re-established population where they disappeared.

NO ONE ELSE HAS PAID A DIME TO SAVE THESE ANIMALS.
HUNTERS PAID FOR IT ALL.
As for wolves we hunters will never allow them to disappear again. We love animals and understand animals and the environment they live in.

Wolves have been saved!! THANKS TO HUNTERS!

Us hunters do need help. We have carried the burden since Theodore Roosevelt. Please don't fight us because you feel for the individual animal, help us save the species that need saving.

ANYONE THAT SAYS HUNTING IS WRONG IS TRULY IGNORANT OF WILDLIFE. When you drive to Yellowstone an look out how awesome it is. Many of you thank god for creating it. You need to thank a hunter for setting it aside for you to enjoy. HUNTERS CREATED THE NATIONAL PARKS, look it up.

So now that the truth has been explained to you.
YOUR WELCOME!

If you are supporting one of those anti-hunting organizations like defenders of wildlife, HSUS, some of the others, Find out where you money goes. IT GOES TO LAWYERS AND LOBBISTS not WILDLIFE.

My money goes to biologists and wildlife management for ALL animals. Look it up!

You are mistaken. I subscribe to the Nature Conservancy, which has spent a lot more than a "dime" on preserving wildlife habitat. In fact, the teamed up with the BLM and Ducks Unlimited to preserve a large wetland in my area.
You are arguing a zero sum game, which is the way things go these days I guess.
I support hunting and fishing, and enjoy doing my share. But as far as hunting the wolves goes, however, I think it is obvious this is a ploy by the folks who want a trophy; plain and simple.

The wolves belong in the northern Rockies. And they were in fact hunted into extinction in the region. YOU look that up!

When you eat what you kill, and allow nature to achieve its balance despite what you take, that's good stewardship. When you claim to know how to balance these animals by sneering at those who care about their preservation, you do your argument AND the animals a disservice.

who do you think your fooling with your s/c/r/e/w/e/d/up logic?

You created National Parks only to K/I/L/L the ones who were there first?
You hunters have way too much arrogance to think your the saviors of the animal kingdom..if animals could speak bet they'd tell a story of persecution, savage hunts, k/i/l/l/i/n/g their babies and families.
Setting aside a park for the hunters to k/i/l/l for sport is sick, so your NOT welcome one bit!

The states are so poor from free trade that have to oversell hunting permits and raise car registrations.

as I read many of the posts here, I realize the level of animal worship that has permiated our society. Why don't some of you google ol' three toes. Three Toes was a wolf in western SD and eastern Wyoming/Montana that ran for years killing livestock for nothing but the killing. There is so much bs out there about wolves and how they do nothing but kill for food. What right do you people have in forcing these animals upon those of us in the west who make our living with livestock? The wolves were never really threatened as a species, but only the numbers in the USA. Canada still had plenty of them and introducing them back into our country after our very wise forefathers got rid of them was nothing more than animal worshipers having their way. I raise sheep in the area that ol' three toes ran and I am sure they will be back in my area unless they are hunted to control them in wyoming. Oh and btw, if they run the wolf hunting program like they do others, they will stop the hunt on the rest of the permits as soon as the quota is met. The only solice I have is that you city weirdos have your rats.

such arrogance! what gives you the right to claim their land? They were there first and why do people who CHOOSE to live in the wolves homeland suddenly complain because the wolves (who were there first) are only do what wolves do, eat!!! It was S/T/U/P/I/D of you to live there to begin with. YOU should move and leave the wolves alone. I mean really, how S/T/U/P/I/D can you be to move exactly where wolves live, eat and breathe and then complain of it????
I hope the wolves live forever in peace and in THEIR rightful homeland.

where exactly would you have people live? Every place on Earth has some animal that was there before man. Tell you what once wolves develop the means to force me to move I'll live where they tell me.

Then those ranchers were uninformed, I have had livestock in Northern Minn and shared my land with a wolf pack. What did I do to protect my horses and cattle?? Easy answer, I bought two Llamas and two mules, they will keep the wolves away from stock, even fighting if necessary. I never lost one horse or calf to my wolf pack, they are much more interested in eating white-tail deer and rabbits. The deer herd in Northern Minn has grown and is a healthier herd because of proper culling by wolves. Its a win-win-win, healthy wolves, healthy deer population, happy deer hunting. Why didn't you invest in a Llama to stay with your sheep or is it just easier to complain?

We humans have caused so many other species to become extinct; wolves may be our next victims.

We extirpate, or at least maltreat, just about every other living species. Our lives are the poorer for this.

Otherwise, selecting Salazar was a mistake! (and Vilsak is not any better, really)

So much for this eco-friendly administration! It is KEN SALAZAR, Obama's Interior Secretary, who is allowing this to happen.

If Obama and Salazar wanted this hunt to stop, it would.

As much as I want this hunt to stop, I don't want the White House or anyone else in power interfering with last-minute decisions by federal judges. We had enough of that kind of arm twisting with Bush/Cheney.

1650 wolves (roughly) and 9000 permits sold already...

May as well pencil them in for 'extinct in the wild' again.

I find it incredibly ironic that many of the very same people who hate environmentalists, are the ones hunting animals "tree huggers" saved. Were it not for protecting such species, these hunters would have nothing to hunt.

"Our game species have taken a terrible beating." Ha. I wonder if the guy really thinks that way or if he is just another truthy rightie. It's hard to tell. The whole idea of having wolves back in their old habitats is that they prey on game species, the predator/prey relationship maintains the genetic health of both species. We either have wilderness where natural processes work or we have a game park where Dick Cheney can have a few shots.

Before long, the only place we'll be able to see wolves will be on Animal Planet. Shame these idiots weren't raised to respect and admire these animals instead of killing them out of existence.

Nature takes care of her own excesses...man does not need to intervene...to kill God's beautiful creatures for sport is uncivilized.

In my state there is an email travelling through the web to boycott Idaho potatoes, and it is passing into other states. .Protest Emails are also being sent to the Idaho governors office I wonder if those licence fees for wolf killing are going to equal the amount of money lost in potatoe sales. I went to the supermarket today to buy potatoes, and although I love Idaho potatoes...I passed them by.

Yes, The email adresses to protest the hunting of the Grey Wolves, by boycotting Idaho potatoes is, potato.idaho.govho.gov and potato.idaho.govto.idaho.gov

This morning,s New York Times had two good editorials on the Grey Wolves possible extinction. Handing out 9000 licenses to kill, when there are only 1600 grey wolves at last count... well you do the math.

The Idaho Governor does not care what you think and the farmers who make those potatoes often have livestock that suffer at the mouths of those wolves. Horse getting gored ect. and if you think horses are not still a viable farm and ranch tool then you are a fool. NOBODY is talking about getting rid of all of them!! So now you got your farmer whos potatoes you love being squeezed from both ends. NUTS! Your little potato protest isn't going to work anyway........
