SYDNEY — Oscar-winning actress Cate Blanchett got a head wound when she was hit by a prop on stage Wednesday during a Sydney theater performance.

The performance of Tennessee Williams' "A Streetcar Named Desire" was canceled, but the 40-year-old Australian actress will return to the stage for Thursday's show, Sydney Theater Company spokesman Tim McKeough said.

"Another actor lifted the prop above his head, and she somehow sustained a minor blow to the head," McKeough said.

Sydney Theater Company is run by Blanchett and her playwright husband, Andrew Upton.

Blanchett, who won a supporting actress Oscar in 2005 for "The Aviator," is playing the lead role of Blanche DuBois.

That was such a tragedy. Hopefully now more people will be aware of the importance of checking out what may initially seem to be a "superficial" head wound.

I'd love to see her in "Streetcar" - sounds like a GREAT part for her. Always loved her as a actress. As a person, however, she has appeared to be a little feather-brained. But a terrific actress.

Feather brained? Sheesh, precisely the opposite. The secret to Ms Blanchette is that she is thoroughly grounded. She has 2 bachelor degrees including an economics degree from Melbourne University. She is the artistic director of the Sydney Theatre Company, her work choices are based on quality not remuneration and I can't even begin to think of a public event where Ms Blanchette has displayed anything other that classy, witty intelligence.

I loved her in that movie about wartime Paris. Johnny Depp had a small part as a gypsy. What was the name of that movie?

Are you thinking of Chocolat where the lead character meets a gypsy which is Depp? That was not Cate, but a great French actress Juliette Binoche.

Both Cate and Juliette are wonderful actresses, above the rest in talent IMHO, Juliette just does a lot more French movies so not as well known to Americans as Cate.

It was another movie. I can't remember the name of it either. She played a woman who became a spy for the Allies.

she's so versatile...can play in ANYTHING and be believable...really sinks into her characters...i love Meryl Streep, but so does everyone, and it would be nice to make room for someone like Cate...she's often underrated, i think...but the cool thing is that she seems to never 'make a fuss' about it, which is such an endearing quality...

She reminds me of Daniel Day Lewis and Meryl Streep - very talented and you never hear any gossip about them.

Yes. She redeems the magnificent name Kate/Cate after what it has suffered at the hands of those far less worthy.

I know accidents happen, but shouldn't they have rehearsed this scene enough to know how cautious they needed to be?

Great actress. Hope she's fine.
