Maria Sharapova's U.S. Open Dress: Hit Or Miss? (PHOTOS, POLL)

Maria Sharapova showed up at the U.S. Open yesterday ready to play some serious tennis and sporting some serious style. The 29-seed player was clad in a black Nike mini-dress with silver crisscrossed stripes, a silver headband and simple sneakers...and $1000 diamond earrings made for her by architect Frank Gehry and Tiffany & Co.

For the article, and the question being asked about the outfit, why the shots of the head band and the shoes? I want to see more of the outfit itself...her behind! a shot of her bending over, swaying back and forth, waiting for the volley...from behind!

WRONG - black clothing absorbs sunlight and the heat radiating from your body, but if it is loose-fitting, and there is wind, the wind convects the heat away faster than it is absorbed. White clothing reflects sunlight, but also reflects internal heat back towards your body, so the net effect under identical conditions is less cooling than if you wore black.

I saw her on ESPN wearing this dress, and it was really a beautiful expression of fashion and femininity. The movement of the dress when she walked was so fluid and almost sensual, I think she looked awesome.

The dress is different. I liked it, but I don't see it catching on...Tennis outfits should be comfortable. This outfit didn't look like it would be too comfortable, especially in the later sets....

Exacty! Has anyone noticed, Maria always get an easy draw although she is not a top seed? However, the William sisters are No. 2 and No. 3 in the world but are always in the same bracket with the toughest players.

The USTA apparently wants Maria to win badly.

the USTA has nothing to do with the setting at the US Open. There are rules and on the contrary the top seeded have easy first rounds. It's the reason it is so hard for non seeded to come through.

John McEnroe will tell you in a minute all that beauty means nothing when it comes to tennis. It's can you win? I love when he commentates because he doesn't like all that fluff of who's cute, pretty or has a nice body. But, I do understand that people in this country do obsess about white beauty. When one lacks substance themselves they rely on beauty to fill the void.

Well, Maria Sharapova was already #1 too. She had to stop playing for 8 months because of an injury and she is now trying to come back.
Venus and Serena had also to fight injuries in the past and fell in the ranking.

JDRNYC, I hope the Williams sisters don't take note. I like Maria and love her fighting spirit, however, you can look at her and by the time she reached Venus and Serena ages, she going to look ruff without some type cosmetic help (see picture No. 4 above).

She's tall and thin with absolutely no muscle tone and she's an athlete but I like most of her outfits.
