Michael Jackson Funeral

GLENDALE, Calif. (Associated Press) - Michael Jackson's family has arrived more than hour late for the pop singer's funeral, keeping 77-year-old Elizabeth Taylor and other celebrities waiting on a hot summer evening.

A police escort ushered the motorcade of 31 cars, including Rolls-Royces and Cadillacs, to Forest Lawn Glendale on Thursday.

The planned start of the service came and went as the crowd of about 200 awaited the arrival of Jackson's parents Joe and Katherine and the singer's children. The motorcade from their Encino compound departed more than a half-hour after the funeral was to begin.

Temperatures hovered at 90 just before sunset, with some mourners fanning themselves with programs for the service. Other mourners included Barry Bonds, Macaulay Culkin and the Rev. Al Sharpton.

GLENDALE, Calif. (AP) -- Elizabeth Taylor, Barry Bonds, Macaulay Culkin and other celebrities gathered to mourn Michael Jackson on a hot, muggy Thursday night, slowly filling rows of white chairs placed outside the mausoleum where the King of Pop will be entombed.

The planned start of the service came and went as the crowd awaited the arrival of Jackson's family, including parents Joe and Katherine and the singer's children. A motorcade with 20 cars from their Encino compound departed more than a half-hour after the funeral was to begin, and with a 20-minute journey to make.

The five front rows of chairs remained empty, awaiting their arrival.

The delay meant that the 77-year-old Taylor and others were kept waiting on a muggy night at which temperatures hovered at 90 just before sunset, with some mourners fanning themselves with programs for the service at Forest Lawn Glendale.

The air was scented with smoke from a devastating wildfire that was about 10 miles distant from the cemetery.

A large, blimp-like inflated light, the type used in film and television production, and a boom camera hovered over the seating area placed in front of the elaborate marble mausoleum. The equipment raised the possibility that the footage would be used for the Jackson concert documentary "This Is It."

About 250 seats were arranged for mourners over a green surface. Nearly double the number of media credentials, 435, were issued to reporters and film crews who remained at a distance from the service and behind barricades.

Maria Martinez, 25, a fan from Riverside, Calif., who was joined by a dozen other Jackson admirers at a gas station near the security perimeter, gave a handful of pink flowers to a man with an invitation driving into the funeral.

"Can you please put these flowers on his grave?" she told him. Martinez said she picked them from a nearby park. "They were small and ugly, but I did that with my heart. I'm not going to be able to get close, so this is as close as I could get to him."

The man consented, adding, "God bless."

Glendale police said all was going smoothly early in the evening and there were no arrests.

Michael Jackson will share eternity at Forest Lawn with the likes of Clark Gable, Jean Harlow and W.C. Fields, entombed alongside them in the mausoleum that will be all but off-limits to adoring fans who might otherwise turn the pop star's grave into a shrine.

After the burial, the closest the public will be able to get to Jackson's vault is a portion of the mausoleum that displays "The Last Supper Window," a life-size stained-glass re-creation of Leonardo da Vinci's masterpiece. Several 10-minute presentations about the window are held regularly 365 days a year, but most of the building is restricted.

Lisa Burk, who blogs about celebrity graves at http://www.gravehunting.com, said the Jackson family chose well for his final resting place if it was privacy they were after.

"It's impossible to get in there," Burk said. "It was before, and it will be worse now."

By late afternoon Thursday, media tents had cropped up all along the boulevard across from the wrought-iron gates that serve as the main entrance to Forest Lawn. That vantage point offered no view of any mausoleum -- just a fountain and a building containing the gift shop.

The Jackson family had booked an Italian restaurant in Pasadena for a gathering Thursday night, said Alex Carr, assistant operations manager at Villa Sorriso, in the city's Old Town district. She wouldn't specify the menu or number of people, but said the entire restaurant, which can accommodate 200 guests, had been reserved for the event and that security would be present.

The ceremony ends months of speculation that the singer's body would be buried at Neverland Ranch, in part to make the property a Graceland-style attraction. An amended copy of Jackson's death certificate was filed Thursday in Los Angeles County to reflect Forest Lawn as his final resting place.

In court on Wednesday, it was disclosed that 12 burial spaces were being purchased by Jackson's estate at Forest Lawn Glendale, about eight miles north of downtown Los Angeles, but no details were offered on how they would be used.

The King of Pop died a drug-induced death June 25 at age 50 as he was about to embark on a comeback attempt. The coroner's office has labeled the death a homicide, and Jackson's death certificate lists "injection by another" as the cause.

Dr. Conrad Murray, Jackson's personal physician, told detectives he gave the singer a series of sedatives and the powerful anesthetic propofol to help him sleep. But prosecutors are still investigating, and no charges have been filed.

If they delayed they might had their reasons.

As much as I love huffpo, they need to get their act together. Looks like they decided to go the National Enquirer route on this one. Last week I complained about their over-emphasis on job numbers (yes, we all know the economy is pretty bad). But we don't Huffpo bombarding us with daily percentage figures and photos of angry, sad, and depressed Americans who are out of a job. My guess is, if the economy was bad on Monday, I kinda doubt it would improve by Tuesday.

Oh, and is this supposed to be huffpost's last dig at MJ on the night of his funeral? Yes, we all remember the vile stuff Ariana said about MJ during his trials.

Awesome headline huff. I mean whats more important, the mom of the deceased having a break down and the family doing as much as they can to help her to make it to the funeral which caused lateness or stating how Dame Elizabeth was kept waiting.

I am glad Elizabeth is a better person than the folks who makes up these stupid headlines. Who will wait for you guys when your time comes.

I hate media.

Rest In Peace my dear King of Pop.

There could have been many reasons for the delay, and it makes no sense to comment harshly about things nobody knows about for sure. Michael was finally laid to rest and his family - regardless of how late they were - got to mourn, weep and fall apart without the glare of the cameras. My heart goes out to the Jackson family and I pray for them; for there is no greater sorrow for a parent than to lose a child, or for precious children to lose their parent(s).

And looking at the rainbow of friends who were invited to his final goodbye, is a wonderful testament to the man and who he was.

RIP MJ

Firstly, Liz was not born yesterday and is well aware of the human phenomenon of running late. I am certain she has left a few waiting herself. And all of the "discussion" is based on a writer's comment and nary a complaint from Liz, whom I'm sure was patiently waiting to honor her friend. Besides, she speaks English very well and could ask for assistance at any time.

Next, anyone burying a close family member is not to be held accountable for anything that occurs on that day. It is completely and wholly about them getting their closure and whatever happens is their destiny. I also noticed Mr. Sharpton filmed looking at his watch.

Besides, this was the funeral of a worl class celebrity and was a very complex affair on many levels.
I'm glad they all had a nice restaurant to go to afterwards to be together and ease the pain.

And the total absence of Diana Ross during the whole periodis a bit alarming to me. I am a huge fan and it makes me think that she is not up to par or not wishing to be seen in public. She may have some issues herself.

A very good friend said to me recently..."do not be short with people as you do not know what they are going through in their lives". Makes so much sense in these tumultuous and precarious times we are living through.

Viva la vida!!!

Yes, I'm sure the Jacksons did not delay their arrival just to make it hard for their son and brother's BFF. Silly headline!

Before we go off the deep end here, let's have a little compassion, please. We don't know the reason the family was late. Perhaps MJ's Mother couldn't deal with the fact she was interring her son. Just maybe, she was very fragile and the finality of the moment got to her. Maybe, the children were upset and needed comforting. We just don't know. It really doesn't matter. MJ is finally in his resting place and that is what's most important here.

This was incredibly thoughtless of the Jackson family. Elizabeth Taylor's health is fragile, and then they do this. His family, and Michael lived and live in this state of lack of thought for others.

Michael was a great talent, but took all that talent and potential and used his money and celebrity to sink into a sad life.

Thank God your opinion is just that and it remind me of something that every one process.
How could the Jacksons be so uncaring by having a grieful and sorrowful moment while you all wait on them. You see folks in the real world the final laying there love one to rest moment hit them like a load of bricks; which forced Lliz and the other celebrities to wait for an hour. 'Mean old Jacksons' You all do know that these folks did not set out to ruin your Thursday evening or Liz's. The Jackson's have suffered a great loss and being someone who have expereinced this type of loss; the lateness was related to Mrs.Jackson and children having a come apart as they were getting ready to leave the house - the finality of the MJJ's Funeral was too much for them to handle at that moment.
You see perfect people the Jackson family was experiencing real life moment and I apologize on their behalf for them interupting your MJJ Thursday Burial event. Remember, this is all about you all and not about the Jackson's family grief.

Did Elizabeth tell you people how upset she was? If she was that fragile then she would have stay home. Instead she wanted to go pay her last respect to her friend and if it took her all day she would have stay. If Michael had no thoughts for others, would he help the number of people he help. Did you see the guy on Larry King who was set on fire when he was a kid by his father? He talk about Michael, how Michael helped him. Remember Ryan White when all others were turning their back on Ryan, Michael became his friend . The song Gone to Soon was written by Michael for Ryan. So based on these two accounts you are a liar when you say Michael had no thoughts for others. Michael was a great entertainer. And I will never forget him. Neither will his friend Elizabeth Taylor.

This has probably already been said, but I found the headline to be kind of....strange. Since when did a funeral become about the people who attended (especially friends) and not the deceased and his family?

I don't know why the family was so late, (and neither does anyone here), but guests who found the wait unbearable (especially those who are too ill or infirm), should have left.

I've cooled my heels at funerals and weddings from time to time, and at times have found the reasons for the delay unconvincing. But out of courtesy and respect for the family, as well as hoping that nothing has gone seriously wrong (one time a procession of funeral cars was involved in a chain reaction collision on the highway), I've waited for the ceremony.

Besides, nothing lasts forever. You have to go through it to get around it.

No offense to Liz Taylor, but the ceremony wasn't really about her. Plus, she hasn't acted in years and I doubt she had to be anywhere anyway.

If Liz couldn't stand the waiting she could have just left or gone inside somewhare.
Anyway, somehow I think I am more concerned with Michael's poor grief stricken mother. T
To the family: you are in my prayers.
There are some horrible racists people out there who want to persecute you, but I must say I admire how you manage to ignore the haters and LIVE YOUR LIFE.
Blessings beautiful family!!

You are correct.

Liz Taylor isn't a monarch or dictator. She was invited and she could have turned down the invitation if she couldn't handle the weather. The last time I checked, LA is always warm and muggy this time of the year.

Liz suffers from congestive heart failure which can be aggravated by high heat and humidity. Took quite a lot for her to be there. The Jacksons were very inconsiderate of their guests.

I agree. Liz was a dear friend to Michael and then his family disrespected her in this manner. His family should have done whatever it took to be there on time in order to honor their son and the people who had come to honor and remember him.
