DAMASCUS, Syria — Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez told the Israeli people not to support their government, which he described as "genocidal" on Friday, the second day of his trip to Syria.

Chavez is on an 11-day trip to Libya, Algeria, Syria, Iran, Belarus, Russia and Spain in what he is describing as a bid to build a multi-polar world and decrease U.S. influence in the region.

The Venezuelan president has singled out Israel for criticism during his visit to Syria, slamming it for mistreating the Palestinians and being an agent of U.S. imperialism.

"The state of Israel has become a murderous lackey at the service of imperialism," Chavez said. "It's a genocidal government. I condemn that Zionist government that persecutes the heroic Palestinian people."

Chavez, whose remarks were broadcast by state television in Venezuela, added that "the people of Israel shouldn't support a genocidal government."

Chavez spoke in front of about 10,000 people who gathered at a football stadium in the city of Sweida, some 110 kilometers south of Damascus, near the Jordanian border.

More than 200,000 people from the Sweida area carry Venezuelan citizenship and most are members of Syria's Druse sect, who immigrated to Venezuela in the past century.

Chavez later inaugurated a public garden in the city, naming it after 19th century Latin American independence leader Simon Bolivar.

The firebrand Latin American leader has built close ties with Iran, Syria, Cuba and other countries while his relations have grown tense with Israel.

Chavez strongly criticized Israel's war against Gaza in December and January and said the Jewish state should return to Syria the strategic Golan Heights that it captured in 1967 Mideast war.

Chavez also called for Israel to "take its hands off Latin America also. Because there the U.S. empire is trying to turn Colombia ... into the Israel of Latin America."

Venezuela and Colombia have been feuding for weeks over negotiations between the Colombian government and Washington that would allow the U.S. military to increase its presence at seven Colombian bases through a 10-year lease agreement.

Chavez calls the pending deal a threat to Venezuela. Colombia says it's necessary to more effectively help fight drug traffickers and leftist rebels.

Later Friday, Chavez arrived in Tehran and praised Iran for standing up to he said were "western forces" attempts to destabilize it after the elections there. The Iranian opposition alleges the country's June 12 election was rigged in Ahmadinejad's favor and that pro-reform challenger Mir Hossein Mousavi was the true winner.

After the election, Iranian security forces, including the Revolutionary Guard and pro-government Basij militia, crushed mass street protests against Ahmadinejad's re-election in a heavy crackdown that prompted heavy criticism from the West.

Chavez is doing a good job inside his country with reforms. But he an utter ignoramus in as far as international affairs are. Here he is just reading Cliff Notes prepared for him by his pal Ahmadinejad.

Why is Pinchas Brenner still the Chief Ashkenazi Rabbi of Venezuela?

He was a participant in the 2002 Coup and at the Presidential Palace when it was seized. Shouldn't clergy stay out of politics?

I wonder how many pioneers voiced their dissent when it was the US government and military versus the indigenous people of America? ...or Cambodian citizens during Pol Pot's regime, etc.?

The opposing viewpoints on this thread demand proof and evidence, yet provide none to defend their own opinion; instead they rely on put downs and cheap oneupmanship smugness.

Just because someone does not agree with a country's governmental & military policies; that does not necessarily make them a hater, or wrong.

Remember that it is a luxury to have the freedom to voice your opinions on blogs, etc.

Most of the rest of the world does not share this luxury.

I concur, why you need only take for instance the demonstration on 4th september in Gaza in which the Palestinians were attacked by the Israeli military for attempting to peacefully protest the wall (deemed illegal by the Israeli Supreme Court) that ran through their land and effectively cut them off from their families. Sir, they certainly do not 'share this luxury' of being able to speak out freely about the injustices carried out against them.

And so we will speak out for them and we will do so because we DO have that luxury and we will do so UNTIL they have that luxury and instead of fighting for the rights of an oppressed people you continue to defend the indefensible and with every feeble justification, you inch closer and closer to losing your humanity. You and others like you are absolutely NO different from those who attempt to defend the actions of the Third Reich or those who deny the holocaust. You too deny what is right before your eyes. You need no further proof and any attempt to argue the contrary reveals you more and more to be beneath contempt.

Chavez is on his world tour of repressive regimes & met with Ahmadinejad and they pledged to work together against the USA. He reinforced the lie that the post-election riots in Iran were the work of Western forces trying to destabilize Iran.
Meanwhile, back in Caracas his repressive regime will now pull the plug on 29 radio stations in addition to the 34 he has already shut down. And a new investigation into Globovision will probably lead to the closesure of the only major television station that does not take it’s marching orders from Chavez. A new Chavez education law will insure indoctrination of youth in schools.
There are many more examples of the hypocrisy of Chavez and his love and support of
“ the people “.
How can anyone who loves freedom and supports human rights support Chavez ? ? ?

1st they came for the communists...
Then they came for the socialists...
Then they came for the trade unionists...

Is how i thought it originally went. Chavez is certainly a Socialist and i'd say he has a reasonable fear of our Military "coming for" him.

First they came for the communists, and I did not speak out--
because I was not a communist;
Then they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out--
because I was not a socialist;
Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out--
because I was not a trade unionist;
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out--
because I was not a Jew;
Then they came for me--
and there was no one left to speak out for me.

"In fact, one very conservative and very honest Zionist leader, Nachem Goldman, who was the President of the World Zionist Organization and who was detested towards the end because he was much too honest...just before his death in 1982 or so, made a rather eloquent and unusual statement in which he said that it's -- he used the Hebrew word for "sacrilege" -- he said it's sacrilege to use the Holocaust as a justification for oppressing others. He was referring to something very real: exploitation of probably the world's most horrifying atrocity in order to justify oppression of others. That kind of manipulation is really sick."

Nothing in your posting is in any way connected to the statement issued by Chavez. He certainly has the right to ssay whatever he wants, but he is certainly wrong about this issue. Given his record it is amazing anyone would think this is a story.

I wish the Palestinians would abandon their own representatives!

For anyone who believes that the Palestinians have recourse to peaceful protests.....that the Israeli military only attacks when provoked...that the Palestinians only know violent dissent, I invite you to view this report and tell me what more the Palestinians can do to stop the occupation of their lands? To improve their lives?

They can stop firing rockets into Israel, they can stop teaching their children to hate Jews and that murdering a Jew is good for their casue, they can recognize Israel's right to exit next door in a state of peace. What part of that don't you understand ? What part of that don't they understand ?

If the Israeli Government honestly cared about that recognition they would stop the expansionism, stop with the checkpoints/roadblocks, stop polluting the river Jordan downstream to it's neighbours... and not expect it to happen overnight.

But it's a smokescreen what your asking. The IG is not interested in peace. A rocket attack is a great way to barrel in and knock off Palestinian civilians at a ratio of over 9 to 1, no police work required, just make sure you keep out the Red Cross.

Chavez is desperate to ally himself with anyone he thinks that can help him stay in power. All that does is make him and them more likely to be targeted for regeim change.

Truth hurts.

Just wish folks would commit to changing the truth rather than attacking those who dare to voice it.

Would be so much more productive.
