'GQ' Buries Article Critical Of Russian President Vladimir Putin

For war journalist Scott Anderson, the most confounding part of his recent assignment for GQ magazine to explore the root of terrorist acts in Russia a decade ago wasn't the suggestion of treachery and subterfuge he found.

It was the reception his story ultimately received in the United States.

I don't blame them for not distributing the story in Russia, have you seen how many journalist have been killed over there?

Where was this guy 10 years ago when everyone else in Russia was covering this? Everyone knows that the FSB was responsible for bombing those apartment buildings in Moscow. Moscovites didn't say anything, but we all knew. Some newspapers like Zavtra and Novaya Gazeta covered it but who cares? About twenty people read both. The official story was it was caused by Chechen rebels and that's the rationale for a second incursion into Chechnya. There were even reports of witnesses who caught the agents trying to plant the bombs in the buildings, again, ignored by national media in both countries.

Fast forward ten years, Russia is richer with a different cast of oligarchs, Grozny has been rebuilt, Chechnya is a obedient, Muslim theocracy, and nobody cares about government corruption anymore. But I don't blame GQ for not running this article. Putin's Russia is no day at the beach, but journalists were getting killed for investigative reports during the "democratic" Yeltsin years, too. It's all about who you know and mending fences. That is how you are successful in Russia.

Do you actually expect to find true journalism in GQ? That's like looking for it in Maxim.

Doesn't surprise me. The Newhouse family owns Conde Naste which in turn publishes GQ. For years the 2 old brothers who founded their print empire weren't consumed with huge profits. As the newspaper and print industry in general has floundered, the nephews and nieces who're taking over have begun to ruin the business. They've taken newspapers that are struggling and have socked them with internet sites that are h0rrible. Rather than creating newspaper internet sites, they saddle them with separate companies that often don't even mention the parent newspaper. The sites themselves look like sites from the late 90's. Employees at their newspapers throughout the U.S. are being laid off or forced to take 15% wage decreases. It's an even bet that more than half of the papers will be closed or will begin printing only 2 or 3 times a week.

It doesn't surprise me that rather than care about the truth, the Newhouse's new generation cares only about the bottom line and ticking off Putin will do nothing for their bottom line. They're no better than Murdock.
