In this photo released on Sunday Aug. 30, 2009 by the Glynn County Police Department, Guy Heinze Jr. is shown. Heinze Jr., 22, who called 911 to report finding seven people slain in a dingy mobile home on a historic Georgia plantation, was arrested late Saturday and charged with illegal possession of prescription drugs and marijuana, tampering with evidence and making false statements to police, Glynn County Police Chief Matt Doering said. BRUNSWICK, Ga. — A man who told authorities "My whole family's dead!" in a frantic 911 call was charged Friday with killing the eight people attacked in his family's mobile home in coastal Georgia.

Guy Heinze Jr., 22, was arrested Friday on eight counts of first-degree murder in the slayings last weekend at a mobile home park a few miles north of Brunswick, a port city midway between Savannah and Jacksonville, Fla. Among those killed were seven of Heinze's relatives.

Glynn County Police Chief Matt Doering would not say what evidence led police to charge Heinze, who was returned to the county jail Friday less than two hours after his release on bond on lesser charges.

The chief also declined to say whether police think Heinze acted alone or with others.

"Right now, I don't know," Doering said. "I do know he's involved... I would have not allowed him to be arrested if I was not comfortable with that."

Doering said he wasn't sure Heinze was responsible for the deaths until late Friday afternoon when two new pieces of evidence became available, but he wouldn't say what they were.

In the call to emergency dispatchers early Aug. 29, Heinze said he'd come home to find the bodies and that it appeared the victims had been beaten to death. Seven were found dead at the scene, an eighth died at a hospital, and the attack's only survivor remained hospitalized after being critically injured.

"It's the most heinous crime we've ever had in this community," said Doering, who insists that revealing details about the slayings could jeopardize the investigation.

Police haven't released causes of death for the victims. But Doering identified the lone survivor as 3-year-old Byron Jimmerson Jr., the son of one of the slain women.

Hours after the bodies were found, Heinze was charged with evidence tampering, lying to police and drug possession, but police didn't say until Friday that they suspected him of the killings. The arrest warrant for the evidence tampering charge says Heinze admitted removing a shotgun from the home and trying to hide it from police in the trunk of his car. He told police he thought the gun was stolen.

Heinze was arrested Friday as family members of the slain victims gathered for a funeral home visitation the night before they were to be buried Saturday.

The dead included the suspect's father, Guy Heinze Sr., 45; his uncle, Rusty Toler Sr., 44; and his aunt Brenda Gail Falagan, 49. Also slain were Toler Sr.'s four children – Chrissy Toler, 22; Russell D. Toler Jr., 20; Michael Toler, 19; and Michelle Toler, 15.

Chrissy Toler's boyfriend, Joseph L. West, 30, was also killed and her 3-year-old son was hospitalized.

A phone message left for Heinze Jr.'s attorney, Ron Harrison, was not immediately returned. Harrison said earlier this week that Heinze denied any part in the killings.

Clint Rowe, who has been acting as a spokesman for the family, said he learned of the arrests while at a public visitation for the victims, saying it was "definitely a surprise."

"I'm floored right now," Rowe, who is an uncle to the Toler children, said from the funeral home. "But right now it's just an arrest. We have to see where this thing takes us so I'm going to keep my mouth shut until the Glynn County Police Department informs us of more."

The manager of the New Hope Plantation mobile home park where the slayings occurred said the arrest still leaves a lot of questions unanswered.

"I'm feeling just like everyone else is right now, we're all shocked," said Gail Montgomery. "We don't know what any of the circumstances are. We don't know if there was more than one or if it was him by himself."

i'm thinking lazy, incompetent cops and a corrupt prosecuting attorney had not clue one to start an investigation with and decided to just implicate the guy who called the cops. maybe i'm wrong, but my faith in georgia's justice system isn't very strong.

Some come here to reunite with old friends, some come here to heal, learn and move on

and some come here to do as much damage as they can

of course i don't know but it seems awfully convenient... the police didn't have to do hardly anything...lets just charge the guy who made the call and is on drugs!!
if they truly have evidence that he killed these people and their children he should rot, but lets not shoot first and ask questions later

After reading the story about the completely innocent man who was executed in Texas on faulty evidence that he killed his daughters by arson, I don't automatically assume someone is guilty just because they are arrested, much less convicted.

Based on what?

Associated Press: "Heinze was among 10 people living in the 980-square-foot home that his uncle, Rusty Toler Sr., rented for $405 a month."

Ten people living in a 980 sf mobile home? In a sense, it's no wonder that someone snapped. Middle class America does not like to acknowledge the existence of this other America; I don't like to either, honestly. But it does exist, and events like this one (admittedly an extreme case) are a reminder of the toll that living in it takes.

Sadly, we are bound to see many more incidents like this one if the economy doesn't improve.

Doesn't say much for society if the respect for human life varies according to the economy, turns on the value of a dollar.

wow, $405/month for a 980ft^2 mobile home. Seems kinda high. Brunswick must be expensive place to live.

It's pretty common for many people in other cultures to live that way (Indian, Asian, Hispanic, African) voluntarily without anyone snapping and killing their entire families.

That being said, I completely agree that middle and upper class America doesn't even acknowledge the other America.

Also keep in mind the other America, (especially the other, white America) does a lot to support middle and upper middle class America because they believe one day they can one day be rich too. Just look at them in townhalls. I wouldn't be surprised if Heinze's great-great-great-great grandpa fought for the Confederacy in hopes that he could one day own slaves. This thinking hasn't helped them in 150 years but they don't seem to want to change.

If I lived in a trailer with 8 other people I might have evil thoughts. Don't they have a limit? No wonder it's always the family that does these things!

A 3 year old? He attacked a baby?

If he did this, throw the book at him.

So killing 8 other people isn't enough reason to do so?

It takes this evasive sheriff exactly one week to locate two pieces of evidence to return this man to jail? How very convenient. During the course of this week the relatives and neighbors were the ones to release the identities and other information.Basically, this is a scapegoat situation because the residents of New Glynn County are furious and demanding answers. Following Gaffney, they have a right to be. He needed a quick save and this is it. He probably associates with persons who engage in illegal drug activity therefore, his inability to divulge his whereabouts originally. And as far as the shotgun goes- he registered the scene, realized the implications, and removed it.The sheer carnage alone, proximity of neighbors and their comments pertaining to that night indicate that there had to have been numerous people involved. My mother and her husband and 3 of their friends were brutally murdered in Kentucky in 1986 and it took 2 females-this was with everyone awake. How many does it take in a small mobile home, close quarters and everyone asleep? Look at the method-beating- this requires numerous blows to "smash" someone's face in.This is not quietly done. Finally, he said that 6 were in the home. There were nine. Because removing the boyfriend, and other visitors to the home the number residing in the home would have been six. This man is innocent, of this I am certain. The persons responsible are still out there waiting to strike again.

At this point it is impossible to know if he is innocent or guilty. No evidence has been released. As far as the police arresting him yesterday, it is not uncommon for the police to charge someone with a lesser crime while they investigate. He was in jail. It was his making bail & being released which triggered his arrest.

wow, you put this together based on press reports? And you are "certain...this man is innocent"? Well, for sure he will want you on his jury. Amazing criminal investigating.

Innocent until proven guilty? Story is mighty sketchy -- Although, I too am always suspicious of white men in Georgia with shaved heads,I am trying to remain objective. To do less is to become like the racist hate mongers that I shake my heads in wonder at. This family sounds like they are really poor and poverty can be a terrible evil that will steal your humanity away and create the atmosphere where heinous acts can be perpetrated. Some mobile homes are very nice and represent a good standard of living. This mobile home does not sound like it fits that category.
If we are truly so much more educated, advanced, and empathetic, maybe we can stop thinking that all people who live in such dire circumstances are trash and realize that most people are simply doing the best they can given the circumstances they have to work with. Not everyone is capable of rising above their circumstances. For the lucky ones, there are people who help change the circumstances.
