LOS ANGELES — Fear has trumped romance at the box office over Labor Day weekend.

The Warner Bros. fright flick "The Final Destination" remained the No. 1 movie for the second-straight weekend with $12.4 million for the first three days of the long holiday weekend. "The Final Destination" raised its 10-day total to $47.6 million.

It came in ahead of Sandra Bullock's romantic comedy "All About Steve," a 20th Century Fox release which debuted in second-place with $11.2 million from Friday to Sunday. Bullock plays a woman who sets out on the road in pursuit of her soul mate.

Among other new movies, Lionsgate's action tale "Gamer" debuted at No. 4 with $9 million. The movie stars Gerard Butler in a thriller about real humans controlled by players in lethal games.

Opening at No. 10 with $4.2 million was Miramax's comedy "Extract," starring Jason Bateman as a businessman whose personal life heats up just as he's trying to sell his flavor-extract company to General Mills.

Studios will release estimates for the four-day weekend on Monday.

A drippy romance chick-flick vs. an action packed things blowing up and devastation everywhere. No contest - the action film will win.

Sandra Bullock is a talented actress, but she has done enough dumb comedy flicks. She is a very fine dramatic actress and should look for dramatic roles. She played Harper Lee in the British film about Truman Capote. She was much better than Katherine Keaner. I have seen her in other dramatic movies where she is surprisingly good.

I agree, she was great in Infamous as well as Crash. She should do more dramatic roles.

It's good to see she hasn't been retired because she's a little more mature than the others.

It's a holiday weekend - teens are not going to see a romcom when there's a horror film playing at the same theatre ... DUH!

I actually enjoyed 'The Proposal', as typical as it was.

HOW did Bullock and (Canadian) Reynolds NOT have inter|course when they did that shower scene?????? Their privates were touching!

Sandra Bullock is awesome. I will gladly see any movie she stars in. I really think all movies suck in general, and see a fantastic movie about once every two years. I think she rocks. She could play any role and still be believable to me. It gives me an hour or two to clear my brain and just see what happens.

There is something about her personality that is inspiring. Her looks aren't bad either, although she might want to give up playing youngsters. When she was younger, she showed that she could act. Now, she just wants to play romantic comedies. Still, it is always a pleasure to see her on-screen.

I really liked The Proposal (movie) with Sandra Bullock. She was strong, attractive, and it was a cute love story. The leading man was charming. Now this "Steve" movie, I am not going to see it. Her character is ugly and desparate, like a minstrel-show level version of what a single white woman is. I will hold out until that uncoming movie with her adopting the black football player. That looks corny, but at least she is not playing someone like in Steve.

Miss Bullock is a cougar, why does she take on roles making her look desperate, hanging on to a youth hat has abandoned her. She doesn't make watchable movies and that's nothing new. Another person with mediocre talent at best is shoved down the public throats with horrible movies, while real talent gets no attention at all. That's show biz.

I like Sandra Bullock, but I've yet to see her in a vehicle that really lets her stretch as an actor (no bus pun intended).
I hope this film turns out better than the promos, because they don't look promising. She looks cute as a button though.

Sandra Bullock has turned out to be a rather boring actress, along the lines of Jennifer Aniston (although not quite as bad as that). These attractive and mildly talented women in Hollywood find safe vehicles and keep making the same movies over and over again. Eventually we all fall asleep from boredom and refuse to wake up.

Unlike Jennifer Aniston, however, Sandra Bullock may actually have enough talent to really act in a movie. However the longer she sticks to these romantic comedies, the more of a bore she becomes. She ought to try something unpredictable that causes her to stretch and EARN our interest, but this is unlikely.
