Washington Post:

From 2003 to 2006, the Bush administration quietly tried to relax the draft language of a treaty meant to bar and punish "enforced disappearances" so that those overseeing the CIA's secret prison system would not be criminally prosecuted under its provisions, according to former officials and hundreds of pages of documents recently declassified by the State Department.

The history of USA involvement in torture is well documented. It goes back to 1946.

An important milestone were the reservations to the UN Convention mentioned in McCoy's article.

It is a sad day for America when the Bush administration puts us on the same illegal, immoral ground as Iran, China and Russia.

What we need is a good old-time war crimes trial.

Two necessary preconditions for a war crimes trial.

(1) Lose the war.

(2) The victor decides to hold a trial.

So where is Obama in this? If you do not seek out and prosecute the guilty, you are a collaborator. You are no better than they are.

A little birdie told me that, if Obama personally took the lead in pressing for criminal investigations of the previous administration, the current, over-the-top wingnut screeching about everything from his "indoctrination" speech to the kiddies to his "socialist" takeover of the country would look like a lawn party at an adult home.

The camel's nose is in the tent... Holder is just shifting into first gear, Congressional inquiries are proceeding out of the limelight and, somewhere just around the corner, there's a little demon called "critical mass".

The man's not self-destructive, and he's not the prosecutor... he's the President.

Gee... I don't know if I can take any more of these disappointing, surprising revelations. Who'da thunk?

... and we were so safe.

When you try to protect people from prosecution you have got to know something illegal is in the works.

This type of behavior is tantamount to an admission of guilt. I think we all know bushco used torture.

This must be investigated! This must be reported on in detail using dates, names, and places, not only of who did what but who gave the orders.

It goes to the top. We all know that. Now it is time to investigate, prosecute, and imprison.

(I understand the reluctance of the current administration to aggressively address this question. No one wants to set a precedent that would encourage future administrations to go after those who came before, but what bushco did was just flat unconstitutional and this must be prosecuted.)

the headline is backwards...the Bush administration sought to protect intelligence operatives because Cheney had authorized their using illegal tactics...they were seeking to protect the administration's involvement

Daddy bush finally comes out of the wood work to save jr. wondered how long it was going to take before we started seeing statements from his administration. This can only get better, turn up the heat and prosecute!

Patience, everyone, patience.

There is still more surprises for us to be told. We can't do anything just yet because not all the lies and the secrets are exposed. Don't worry, though. The more time that passes, the more loose the lips will become and the more Truth will come out.

Watch Gonzo be willing to spill some secrets (anonymously, of course), because he sure hasn't had any luck with getting a job lately, and Bush seems to have conveniently forgotten about him...

And now that Ashcroft knows he's going to be sued, he'll have a few things to tell, so that he can get a plea deal...
