sarah palin....shipping her son off to a needless war and using it as a trumped up version of "pride" to attempt to win votes in her bid to become vice president...makes me sick !!! does it surprise anyone that she would attempt to control the press and deny our right to SEE the truth about whats going on in a needless war ??? we have been dennied our fundamental right to view the truth about whats going on in the heart of this war long enough ! in the history of our country....this has never happened , the press being so censored on reporting what our men and women are going through over there !!! i am outraged at this....the freedom of the press has been fundamental in getting the truth to the american people...this fundamental right must be kept sacred! just a side note, well actually a question....i have been wondering, does anyone think that glenn beck, sarah palin and rep. joe wilson are involved in a threesome ??? maybe we could find a "death camp" for the three of them, and then get back to business!
A couple of the noodles posting on this thread should Google this:
"sincerity troll"
It will be very informative.
Such gushing sentimentality in objection to seeing the reality of a war we gladly entered.
"Decadent" doesn't even begin to describe SP, or most of the posters here.
Okay, this is a serious question, no sniping, I just need to know. In what way will this picture in question change the turnout of the war in Afghanistan? How is this picture different from the dozens of others of dead American soldiers in Afghanistan?
I'm all for putting the true face of war out in the public so people are aware, but not at the expense of the grieving family. There are military families out there that HAVE given permission for the AP to publish photos of their dead, but to say their voice doesn't matter because soldiers "belong" to us and are not their own is a fallacy.
Nowhere in the 8 year military contract, much less the oath to the Constitution, does it state that the soldier must surrender his/her citizenship, much less his/her civil rights. We're not mercenaries, nor our we indentured servants. You don't "own" us and you never did, the only person who tells us what to do is the Commander in Chief, and that's just plain fact, and the current President of the United States agrees with his General that AP publishing the picture against the Marine's family's wishes, is deplorable.
Look, I'm going out on a limb and guessing that you're very young.
You probably didn't live through the Vietnam War as a youth or adult who was old enough to pay attention.
Back before Reagan and the neocons started chipping away at our freedom of the press, we Americans saw EXACTLY what was going on over there in photographs and videos. We didn't have an occasional little "embedded" report that was stepping all over it's own feet trying to HIDE THE TRUTH from the American people.
If a soldier had his guts shot up, we heard and saw it. If a soldier had his eye put out by shrapnel, we heard and saw it. We didn't have a veil pulled over our eyes. We were not lulled into smarmy sentimentality.
WAR IS HELL. The coverage of war shouldn't be a Hallmark card. It should SHOW us hell in no uncertain terms. That is the only way that Americans can make an INFORMED decision about war. It's not a picnic with bunting and bands and a big sign saying "Mission Accomplished".
It's hell.
Go look at photographs of war-time from the Civil War, through WWi and WWII, through the Korean War and Vietnam. Those iconoic photographs made the war real to three generations.
Now the neocons have been trying to HIDE war from us since Reagan -- a disgusting, dangerous trend that needs to stop.
I'd respond, but it's apparent that you're talking to the voices in your head again and not asking me about anything *I* said.
I've said this a thousand times since the elections ended. But who gives a flying rat F**K what this person has to say anymore?
As much as I hate to agree with Palin on anything, and as much as I respect what the AP does that no one else can, I have to agree.
This is just as bad as the Bush admin refusing to let relatives of the fallen give permission for photos of the dead to be displayed.
The families' wishes should be honored.
According to the Associated Press, yes, they did. The AP just don't care.
I heard a long discussion of this topic on NPR and the AP had a good defense for how this photo came to be used. It's easy to say they just don't care", but in their defense it was more complicated than that since it was taken by an embedded photographer who had been photographing this same marine earlier in the day. http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=112644023
Whether we want to know the real cost of war or be shielded from it is a big debate, but when you read the details of the story, you'll see that this is just Palin latching onto an opportunity to grand-stand. Facts are always optional for her.
Palin had no business interjecting herself into this matter.
This picture depicited the realities of combat. Even so, the family's wishes should have been honored.
i feel bad for the family of the fallen Marine...the AP should have respected the family's wishes...may he RIP...afghanistan is not worth fighting for.
Like Iraq was?
Whatever it takes to dampen America's appetite for war so that we can hasten our exit from both Iraq and Afghanistan. Sometimes we have to be reminded of the fact that real peoople are out there fighting for some nebulous cause and they are not just nameless, faceless casualties. This marine, like all of our fallen, symbolize courage as well as unnecessary sacrifice.
I say, if our boys go to war, we ALL go to war. Let the American people see what is happening to our boys and they might think twice before they vote for another republican” war president”. MISSION ACCOMPLISHED my freakin' arse.
Ummmmm, we have a Democratic President now. Quit biching about the past and hold the current administration to their campaign promises. That's REAL patriotism. I want these wars over too, but griping on a message board isn't going to do it.
That's very unkind to shellfish
Ok Palin, I'll grant you this one. However, grant me that had the AP or MSM in general been more "heartless and selfish" and less patriotic and spineless from 11/99 on, we'd possibly have thousands less dead soldiers today. So, take your pick.
How about a "heartless and selfish" Repug administration that went to war with dubious evidence to protect oil interest? How did that work out? And where was her moral outrage during the last eight years? Palin is farcical.
I posted, check that, tried to post a comment that pointed out that HP editiors know that SP is catnip for HP members; they hate to read about her but love to comment on her; and the censors know that advertisers (Pay Pal, perhaps?) love it when HP runs SP items, news or insignificant it doesn't matter.
The comment got bounced, lets see if this one flies. How do they make decisions about what gets in and what doesn't?
BTW, I'm a veteran and a Liberal.
I also feel, a grieving family's wishes aren't irrelevant, the chicken hawks here like to exploit this soldier's death but nobody's willing to make his sacrifice.
Wow, so apparently Liberals don't join the military, okay. I really don't care what you believe, I don't have to prove myself to you or any other chicken hawk out there, that enjoys exploiting our military for your own political agenda.
