The Washington Post:

As school starts again, there's so much more for a parent to nag about. Homework. Bedtime. Lost hours on Facebook and Xbox. The chores that need to be squeezed in.

But in the age of the digital childhood, Jacky Longwell, 45, mother of three in McLean, often text-messages what she once uttered as her children rushed out the door: Be nice to your brother. Walk the dog. Remember your reading.

All I can say is thank you to our local high school administration for outlawing cell phones and ipods during the day. If any staff member even sees one after the first bell has rung for the day, they are confiscated and have to be picked up by a parent. Some of the parents were the worst abusers sending kids texts during class when they should be getting an education. It is disruptive to the learning environment but these same parents wonder why "Johnny" failed his test. They don't think that communicating all day is a distraction in the classroom for their kids. So far this year it has worked well with minimum complaints from students and parents.

I often log onto Facebook at 3pm while waiting for my university class to start. If I see that my daughter is on at that time (when she should be doing homework or practicing an instrument) yes I send her a text or IM to remind her to stay on task,

The mom in this story is quoted as saying she sends these messages to her daughter "without the noodgy voice".

I looked up "noodgy" in Wikipedia and found nothing.

Is this something only this woman being quoted came up with or is there actually more than one person on this planet who uses the word (?) "noodgy"???

It is not always spelled like that. I use nudge. It is a Yiddish word that essentially means to push or nag.

So when you do this parents, you are raising socially inept children that will end up being digital zombies, unable to communicate face to face with someone. Way to go.

My son won't answer a call but he'll look at his text messages. Call Dad.

I use texting to keep up with my son in college. And my high school senior and I use text for many communications. This does include nagging when being nice did not work.

I have no shame at all. Texting is here and I use it as a mom.
