NEW YORK — When Melanie Oudin wakes up each morning these days, sharing a king-sized hotel bed with her mother, she's basically your average teen visiting the big city.

Then the 17-year-old from Marietta, Ga., gets out on court at the U.S. Open in those pink-and-yellow sneakers with the word "BELIEVE" stamped near the heel, and there is nothing ordinary at all about her.

No higher-ranked or more-accomplished opponent is too intimidating. No deficit is too daunting.

Yes, the comeback kid did it again Monday.

Five points from a straight-set loss, Oudin kept plugging away with her perpetual-motion defense and pick-her-spots offense for a 1-6, 7-6 (2), 6-3 victory over 13th-seeded Nadia Petrova to reach the U.S. Open quarterfinals.

"It's kind of hard to explain how I've done it," Oudin said. "It's, like, now I know that I do belong here. This is what I want to do, and I can compete with these girls, no matter who I'm playing. I have a chance against anyone."

Can't argue with that. The upset of Petrova follows comebacks from a set down against three-time major champion Maria Sharapova in the third round, and No. 4 Elena Dementieva – a two-time Grand Slam finalist and Beijing Olympics gold medalist – in the second.

"I don't actually mean to lose the first set," explained a smiling Oudin, 17-4 this season in three-setters. "I sometimes just start off slowly, I guess. Maybe I'm a little nervous."

Story continues below

The first major quarterfinal of her nascent career will come against No. 9 Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark, who added to the stream of upsets in the women's tournament by knocking off two-time major champion Svetlana Kuznetsova 2-6, 7-6 (5), 7-6 (3).

Asked about facing Oudin, Wozniacki said: "She's had an amazing run. Hopefully someone from the crowd will cheer for me."

Oudin is the story of the tournament so far, already drawing comparisons to Tracy Austin (a U.S. Open champion at 16) and Chris Evert (a semifinalist at 17), and giving U.S. tennis fans hope that there is someone coming up in the women's game behind the Williams sisters.

"This is going to do a lot," Oudin said. "I think it's good for American tennis."

Things are different for the U.S. men: None of the 18 who entered the tournament is left, after 55th-ranked John Isner of Tampa, Fla., lost to No. 10 Fernando Verdasco 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4. It's the first time in the history of an event that began in 1881 that there will be no American men in the quarterfinals.

"I knew that," Isner said. "I wanted to keep it going."

Verdasco, from Spain, will play fourth-seeded Novak Djokovic of Serbia in the quarterfinals, after Djokovic's 6-1, 6-3, 6-3 rout over 15th-seeded Radek Stepanek late Monday.

And Switzerland, of course, has its representative in the final eight: No. 1 Roger Federer extended his pursuit of a sixth consecutive U.S. Open title by beating No. 14 Tommy Robredo 7-5, 6-2, 6-2. Up next is a familiar foe: No. 12 Robin Soderling of Sweden, who is 0-11 against Federer, including losses this year in the French Open final and Wimbledon's fourth round.

The woman who eliminated No. 1 Dinara Safina, Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic, couldn't build on that, losing in three sets to Yanina Wickmayer of Belgium, while Kateryna Bondarenko of Ukraine shut out Gisela Dulko of Argentina 6-0, 6-0.

Like Oudin and Wozniacki, Wickmayer and Bondarenko are first-time Grand Slam quarterfinalists.

This is all so new in so many ways for Oudin, whose twin sister Katherine was bawling in the stands at match's end.

A year ago, Oudin – it's pronounced "oo-DAN" – was ranked 221st and lost in the first round at the U.S. Open. She never had won a Grand Slam match until June, when she knocked off former No. 1 Jelena Jankovic en route to Wimbledon's fourth round – after losing the first set, naturally.

My, how her life is about to change. Starting to change already, actually.

After beating Petrova, Oudin huddled with her coach, Brian de Villiers, trying to figure out how to squeeze in various media obligations with necessary tasks such as eating something and getting treatment for her heavily wrapped left thigh.

Endorsement offers are coming in. Now recognized by strangers, Oudin needs security guards to help her navigate the crowds on her way to the Open's practice courts. Walking through the lobby of her New York hotel is an adventure. There even was a bit of a skirmish among paparazzi when she was in Times Square the other day.

"That was her first realization that she's big-time, that it is going to be scary sometimes," Katherine said. "I'm surprised that she's held it together as well as she has."

On the court, the situation seemed bleak when Petrova, already up a set, was serving at 4-3, 40-15 in the second. One more point, and Petrova would be a game from the win. But Petrova netted a forehand for 40-30, and on the next point, Oudin blocked back a 112 mph serve, then ended an 10-stroke exchange by smacking a forehand down the line.

"Unbelievable winner," said Petrova, who would never again be that close to victory.

"Winning that game kind of gave her a second breath," Petrova said. "She realized, 'OK, I'm back in the game.' And probably after winning previous matches pretty much in the same way, she thought, 'You know, I can do it again.'"

Precisely right.

Forced to hit extra shots because of the 5-foot-6 Oudin's ability to track down balls and sling them back, Petrova began to make more and more mistakes. During one key stretch early in the third set, Oudin won 11 of 13 points – and 10 were thanks to miscues by Petrova.

"She's on a roll. And she has nothing to lose," said Petrova, the fourth Russian in a row Oudin has beaten. "She goes, enjoys it, crowd is behind her. She's just having a blast out there."

Sure is.

"This," Oudin said, "is what I've wanted forever."

Not that forever is all that long in her case. She is, after all, "just 17" – as the lyrics go in the Beatles song reverberating through the Arthur Ashe Stadium sound system after her victories there.

Melanie and Katherine began hitting tennis balls out of a bucket with their grandmother at age 7, then began working with de Villiers at age 9. At about 12, though, Melanie decided she wanted to be home-schooled, so she could focus squarely on tennis. Katherine, meanwhile, plays in national junior tournaments, but has other interests, and is now a senior in high school.

As little kids, the sisters would play matches on a makeshift court, piling up jackets in their home's cul de sac to serve as a net until Mom or Dad said it was too dark to be outside.

They never pretended, though, that they were at Flushing Meadows or the All England Club. Those places seemed too far away at the time.

"It's not like we were saying, 'Oh, we're going to be there one day,'" Katherine said. "But Melanie's just always believed in herself. It's amazing."

Shouldn''t we have reached a point where we root for the ATHLETE because of their character and not even think about color? The great athletes/coaches I admire are people like Cal Ripken, Lou Gehrig, Roberto Clemente, Jackie Robinson, Mariano Rivera, Derek Jeter, Tony Dungy, Kurt Warner, Tim Tebow...good human beings who represent their sports well. They demonstrate genuine humility, show bravery in the midst of adversity, take their craft seriously, donate time or money to help the less fortunate or try to rehab criminals. The type of people with whom I'd like to associate. Last time I checked, those aforementioned names cover a broad spectrum of colors and creeds.

Good point. I believe both Wozniacki and Kuznetsova had only 2 double faults in 3 sets. Unless Wozniacki is way off her game, it should be all over for Oudin. The same would have applied if Kuzzy had won that final tie-breaker. Melanie had a good run, but she played some people that weren't exactly on their game.

May be she didn't let them go to their game? You are only so good as your opponent let you.
Petrova payed very good but her strokes came back. Period.

Some posters here raised the issue of sportsmanship and the Williams sisters.

For having the nerve to discuss the issue they were attacked. The justifications and for the Williams' behavior by these attackers was loud, personal and ugly.

Most interesting about this exchange, is the mirror that these angry, intolerant ranters hold up to the general decay of civility, manners, and yes, sportsmanship that runs rampant, not just in tennis, but in too many sports today.

And the mirror is a reflection of them. Their acceptance, even championing, of poor behavior among athletes speaks more about the same level of social decay and pathological behavior in society at large, than these poor, unthinking, creatures will ever understand.

The truly funny part is, that with each post, they undercut their own arguments, while proving the assertions of those open minded enough to have asked the question in the first place. They only showed that George Carlin was right when he said that humanity is circling the drain.

I personally have never seen the williams sisters have unsportsmanlike conduct.

I've seen calls that should have been for them go against them, and they get angry at that, rightfully so. Most of the time it's serena who gets angry, but when I've seen it, it's justified because I'd be mad too!

But i haven't seen them act in any way that was inappropriate since they've matured.

So i honestly don't know what you're referring to.

I can see melanie developing a similiar style of play, only with more court speed. Dangerous.

As for the Williams sisters, their places are secure in the annals of american tennis.

And the question is, so what? In the record books all that will count in years to come is how many majors did they win, and they've got a long way to go before they can be considered in the same league as most of those women.

As for money, second string quarterbacks make 20 mil a year, and a heavyweight championship fight pays Both fighters more for one fight than Joe Louis made in his entire lifetime. You saying he was chump?

I didn't think so.

what football league are you watching??? I don't know of a single second string qb making 20 mil per year. You are seriously on something, or you are just blatantly lying.

the only second string qb making that much would be the Tom Bradys and Brett Farves of the world who are hurt thus FORCED to play 2nd string.

you. are. smoking.

another thing, there's no question that SW and VW will go down with all the greats. period.

I watched her play this past week when she ousted Dementieva. One of the things that I liked about her was her style of playing. She didn't have those loud, obnoxious grunts like Sharapova (which are clearly unnecessary and meant to throw off the opponent). And she was not like these current muscled amazon players including the Williams and the Russians who just slam the crap out of the ball. She mixed in a lot of different shots, remained cool and calm and collected and reminded me of Chris Evert and players of the past - when the game was also about strategy.

Yes - she does have those fresh, blue-eyed and blonde good looks. And yes - that will always attract attention and be something special. But I see no reason for people to get bitter and resentful about that.

Also - when the Williams sisters hit the scene they received a lot of attention as well, deservedly so. So everyone just needs to simmer down. And when I went to their doubles match it was packed. And they still get a lot of attention and are legends. But they are not demure little built things, so of course they are going to be portrayed differently. Which is great - because it takes all types to make the sport interesting.

Like i said, all you need in america is blond hair and blue eyed "good looks" and you people will choke on your own drool. LOL.... shows how high your standards are.

I mean the girl can have a face that looks Bo Obama's behind, but as long as those eyes are blue... it's all over. LMBAO.

Speaking of body types, Oudin seems pretty darn muscular to me. but then again she has blond hair and blue eyes, so she just can't be called "a man in a skirt' like serena is called, (despite the fact that serena actually has a much more curvy body top to bottom, and more feminine facial features.)

It's ok if you're a hater. At least own up to it.

I say more power to Oudin. I hope she has a long career ahead of her. She is tiny by pro-women's tennis standards (5 foot 6) so I have to tip my hat off to a shorter athlete. (I'm 5' 3" so I always smile when I see shorter than average players in tall people sports.

That being said, no one can touch Serena and Venus with what they have accomplished. If it wasn't for them, women's tennis would be a bunch of Russian chicks with unpronounceable names. Women's tennis would be in the sewers if it wasn't for them.

The nerve of those Russians having unpronounceable names. You'd think they would have had the decency to submit their names to an American panel of lowest common denominators for pronouncability before continuing their carreers. It probably escaped your attention, but tennis is a world-wide sport so not everyone playing it will be a Roddick or a Williams. Did you know how Oudin was pronounced before hearing it on TV?

My favorite female player is Serena Williams and I LOVE Raphael Nadal. Melanie is new...fresh...I hope that she goes far, but I don't think that she will make it into the finals. I'm hoping that Serena will do America proud and win this thing. I don't think that Melanie has the experience to go all the way. I did have a serious problem with how the New York fans treated Venus yeaterday when they rooted for Kim Clijsters instead of American Venus.

Pro tennis isn't like soccer where you have one country playing against another. The players are free lance agents, and to root for the "American" doesn't make as much sense. Venus and Serena are going down in tennis history was two of tennis greats and people like to root for the underdog so I don't take the cheering against them seriously. I cheer for Venus and Serena because I like their games, and like their attitudes towards the game, not because they are American.

Right. I wonder why there were so many chants of "USA!" USA!" "USA!" at the US OPEN when Taylor Dent won against Spain's Ivan Navarro. I wonder why some people in the crowd were displaying American flags. According to you this is all nonsensical. You must have thought the AMERICANS in an AMERICAN city rooting for an AMERICAN against a Spainard was nuts huh Iwanttofu?

Tennis is a wonderful sport and you can be a fan of players from all countries but the crowd is almost always supportive of the player from the home country. If an English man is playing against an American at Wimbledon the crowd is behind their countrymen are they not? Of course they are. You're being ludicrous. Why do you think Wozniacki said, "Hopefully someone from the crowd will cheer for me?" Because Oudin is an AMERICAN playing in the US OPEN with an AMERICAN crowd excited about her because she is good for AMERICAN tennis.

It was disturbing to see the American crowd not only root against her but do it noisily while the ball was in her court. A lot of people pile on the Williams sisters abroad but shockingly in America too in a way that I think really stinks. They have always worn their American citizen proudly and represented the country well. They competed at the Olympics twice winning gold doubles medals for the U.S. when they really didn't have to bother with it. They could have made a lot more money playing other tournaments. The way the crowds acts against them has nothing to do with Oudin who is a nice Cinderella story by the way. It doesn't matter who Serena plays. The crowd will support her opponent like they always do.

Those women aren't stupid. They know what's going on. Even so, they always thank the crowd after each victory whether the crowd deserves thanks or not. That's how classy they are on the court.

You're right Judy. They know what is going on and astute watchers know what is going on. It took a very long time for the Williams sisters to get any type of respect. But it's all good. They're very talented and changed the landscape of tennis and that's all that matters.

One thing I think you need to consider is that Kim Clijsters has been off the tour for about 2 years, and not to nurse an injury or for a suspension. She left to start a family. That strikes a chord in people more universal than silly denominations like nationality. Kim Clijsters has been missed by tennis fans these last couple years, and seeing her make a strong comeback was worth rooting for, even if it meant Venus would have to fall.

Don't think of it as rooting for, or against any one player. Root for the competition they had. It was a great game, and one that will be talked about for some time.

It's just so funny how all of your are trying to justify this garbage. The crowd automatically favors williams' opponent. point blank period.

admit it. stop trying to say it was because of Kim Clijsters baby break.

white tennis fans in the crowd never hesitate to root for white american tennis players. some go for the williams, i'm not saying they don't but many make a point to cheer for their opponents.

i almost can't wait till they retire just so american womens tennis can suck again. American tennis doesnt deserve what they gave it all these years.

All this talk about individual support in tennis vs country support is Bull Pucky.

Some Americans just cannot stand that these two young black women have so exceled in tennis. As such these tennis elite "haters" are still looking for "the Great White Hope" of tennis. Look how they jumped on the Petrova band wagon for a short lived run.

Let's face it if these sisters were two white sisters, America wouldn't be able to get enough of them. They would have been on every cereal box and in every commercial America ever ran since they came on the scene. Instead these sisters got and get minimal commercial contracts and little American support unless it was on the international scene. Even then they were sometimes ignored or rooted against by Americans.

The problem for anti-fans is that sports like tennis are based on skill and unless as in the days of old you take away their opportunity to compete, the Williams' sisters will be front and center in the sport whether Americans support them or not. What is wonderful is that the Williams sisters do have a world wide fan base.

And people like to say that it's their fault because they have "bad" attitudes and lack sportsmanship. Let's conveniently forget that they have been bashed since they came on the scene. If I were them, I may be a little defensive too.

I mean I've literally seen people say in the same breath that they hate the Williams' sisters, but they love John McEnroe.

But, that's the thing in this country. Since everyone is so PC, it has lured people into this false sense of security. That there aren't still people out there who have a general overall dislike for people who are not white. We can look at what's happening to our president and see it as clear as day.

I'm a long-time tennis fan (been watching since high school), and I can honestly say that IMO Melanie Oudin is the most over-rated player I've seen in at least a decade. She has no game - absolutely no serve & she makes way too many errors to be playing at this level. Luck is the only reason she's advanced this far, and the only reason these ranked, more experienced players keep coming up short against her is because they are b e a t ing themselves out there on the court. I expect Oudin's luck will run out on Wednesday.

How old are you really? She's a pro, he/she is a fan. Does not being a politician stop you from commenting on politics? She's an ordinary player with no service game who benefitted from a woefully off track Petrova. I'd like to see her do half as well against a stronger, fitter, bigger serving Wozniacki.

You are so right....but I "believe" in luck and I will continue to pull for her. But then, I am from Atlanta and will root for the home town girl until she loses. What I hate is how the media attempts to turn these young girls into media darlings. Hopefully Malanie has her head on straight.

my sentiments exactly!

They did that to maria sharipova (turned her into a media darling), and just look at her now. OVERRATED!

MelO seems pretty talented at her age, yes she makes a lot of errors but she's 17 years old! She seems very humble and i know she will go far in her career.

My fave will always be serena, but MO should stay hungry, and maybe she'll have the kind of career that serena is having.

"The more I practice, the luckier I get." -- Arnold Palmer.

How many female players have her winning percentage after losing the first set?

She's played like a handful of matches, dude.

That's not a statistic that you should carry around as a bragging right.

When she starts getting way more matches under her belt, that will definitely change and that percentage you're referring to won't be so impressive.

so don't kid yourself.

What a downer you are. You've been watching tennis since high school? I think you are probably not much older than Oudin. Great analysis. But, as we used to say, skill makes its own luck. And if theory was enough to determine the winner, there would not be any reason to get on the court to play.

I'm a long time tennis player over the past 40 years, and a big fan of the game. Melanie Oudin is not over-rated. She was not rated at all. I hope to hear from you Wednesday night when she gets another win under her belt.

I'm a long-time tennis fan (been watching since high school), and I can honestly say that IMO Melanie Oudin is the most over-rated player I've seen in at least a decade. She has no game - absolutely no serve & she makes way too many errors to be playing at this level. Luck is the only reason she's advanced this far, and the only reason these ranked, more experienced players keep coming up short against her is because they are beating themselves out there on the court. I expect Oudin's luck will run out on Wednesday.
