Oprah's big blowout kicking off the 24th season of The Oprah Winfrey Show-- and shutting down a prime stretch of Michigan Avenue-- is officially underway.

NBC Chicago has a live feed of the cordoned-off Mag Mile party zone here.

Eager attendees began showing up overnight, according to the Tribune. The line started to form around 6:30 Tuesday morning and by 8:30 security was allowing people through checkpoints. The main gates opened at noon.

There was a bit of an early morning snafu when organizers told a crowd waiting to enter at one location that they needed to move somewhere else to get in. The announcement caused a stampede, the Sun-Times reported, as hordes of people ran to be first in line at the new location.

Things got a little ugly then, as people accused each other of cutting in line:

Nancy Linson, 54, of Elmhurst, who'd been walking the streets since 2:15 a.m. waiting for the show, said she was disappointed by the behavior of her fellow Oprah fans.

"I'm sad watching people be impatient and unkind with others," she said. "I don't think [Oprah] would be happy about it."

The event has taken over the Mag Mile, forcing traffic and bus routes to adjust. The CTA has an updated bus route map here.

Daley defended Oprah's bash --and the attendant street closures-- as an exposure windfall for Chicago, and Harpo Productions will reimburse the city for all police and sanitation costs. But not everyone is on board. City Council Transportation Committee Chairman Tom Allen said the the lack of public input on the decision "smacks of elitism" while ChicagoNow's Craig Kanalley highlighted a growing belief that the whole event is a promotional dry run for Daley's push for the 2016 Olympics.

Quick Poll

Is Oprah's Event Worth The Hassle?

Yes

No

For those making the trek downtown, Harpo's audience guidelines are here. For those who aren't, the show airs September 10 on ABC.

A full report on the event, from the AP's Caryn Rousseau:

CHICAGO -- Thousands of Oprah Winfrey's fans gathered on Michigan Avenue to help the talk show host celebrate the 24th season of her show with a public taping Tuesday that included performances from the Black Eyed Peas and Jennifer Hudson.

"Hello Chicago," Winfrey said as she came on stage to a cheering crowd for a taping that will shut down the famous downtown street - known as the Magnificent Mile for its upscale shopping - to traffic from early Monday through Wednesday morning. "Isn't this the most fabulous city in the world? I see you all the way down the Magnificent Mile."

The Black Eyed Peas sang their hit single "I got a feeling" as the crowd performed a choreographed dance. Hudson, who is from Chicago, performed her song "Spotlight" as Winfrey stood on the side singing along and dancing.

"It feels good to be home," Hudson told the crowd.

Diane Stimson lined up at 5:30 a.m., nearly 12 hours before the taping started. The 43-year-old Chicago resident called Winfrey an inspiration.

"She worked her way to the top, and she made it," Stimson said. "She gives us all hope."

Winfrey's production company, Harpo Productions, said it would cover all costs for police, paramedics and sanitation at the outdoor taping, which was also to feature Rascal Flatts, James Taylor and magician Criss Angel. "The Oprah Winfrey Show" normally is taped at the Harpo studios on Chicago's near west side.

Several people said they wanted to come because of the difficulty in getting tickets for the regular tapings. Gloria Jones, 60, of Chicago, said she was excited because "I never get a chance to get a ticket, and I figured this is the closest I could get."

The special outdoor event took place on a three-block stretch of Michigan Avenue near the Chicago River, with two blocks of audience members. The taping was free and open to the public.

"She knows where she came from and she remembers that," Janie Wu, 31, of Chicago, said of Winfrey. "That's why we're all here today."

Chicago Mayor Richard Daley attended the taping, which he has said will give the city global exposure and create jobs.

It also came just weeks before the International Olympic Committee will announce if Chicago will have the winning bid to host the 2016 Summer Games. During last year's season premiere of Winfrey's show, 6,000 fans crammed into Chicago's Millennium Park as she celebrated more than 170 American Olympic medalists from the Beijing Games.

If this is an indicator of what the City is going to be like if we get the Olympics.... I hope we don't.

I don't know anyone in the city who does. I think all of the support comes from suburbanites who won't have to pay for it and who won't have to deal with the hassle. Kind of like Oprah's show.

I was pretty annoyed that my bus took like 45 minutes to get me to work. I could have literally walked to work in 45 minutes.

Oh, before I go, question.

Maybe it's just me but, with all of the news coverage on this, why do we have a feed from FOX?

I'm just asking . . .

She did have strong feelings on the school speech controversy when asked about it:

Interesting how any subject (pick one) can reveal inner thoughts. Our jealousy/ envy is stoked by the media and this supposedly "feel good" story, is positioned to tap right in to it.

::cue dark and ominous music:: "Was Oprah's event worth the HASSLE?"

I'm not particularly fond of Oprah personally, but I admire her generosity as evidenced by some of the things she chooses to do with HER money. To help put this "inconveniencing event" into perspective, my Chicago friends tell me:

. The event took place along a 2-3 block stretch of Michigan Avenue. Most Magnificent Mile stores were not even involved, but might have benefited from the draw. Retail traffic has been slow like every place else in America; an extra 20,000 or so bodies in foot traffic couldn't hurt.
.Plenty of notice was given about closures. Chicago has good alternative transportation. The area was avoidable for those not wanting to get caught in traffic. Downtown traffic closings for festivals (much larger and for much longer duration) are typical; all summer long.
. Mayor Daley is no fool (neither is Oprah). This kind of exposure helps to showcase Chicago; both as an Olympics hopeful, and as a world class tourism city. (Doesn't hurt Oprah either.)
. The set-up occurred on the evening of Labor Day (not like a Christmas Shopping holiday) and is back to normal this morning.

Careful folks. Hater-Ade early in the morning causes indigestion. Have a good one!

Wonderful post, Matt !!

It says a lot about the h8ters on this thread when you, an admitted 'non-fan,' can look objectively and see not only the benefit of this event, but that the inconvenience is a very MINIMAL one.

I will never understand why h8ters are always the FIRST to flock to articles pertaining to those whom they h8 . . . except that people love to h8 on those who outshine them . . .

It didn't bother me too much, but I don't understand why the 24th anniversary was such a big deal.

25th anniversary, I can see.

But 24th?

It's not like this wasn't a last minute event. They've been talking about it for a few weeks. I work 3 blocks from the taping and I had no trouble getting out of downtown.

Michigan Ave... between Wacker & Ohio St. was shut down for Grand Old Oprah. I was terribly disappointed that they didn't shut down the whole of Chicago for her 24th anniversary. I plan to be outta town when her show hits 50th. I am told the day will be declared a public holiday.

Oprah is a great citizen of this country and the world. She talks the talk and walks the walk. To put it simply, she cares about her fellow humanity. And, she is so significant because of that and how and what she does to help others in her community and around the world.

Then she should have known better not to shut down a major part of the city for her own publicity...she is her own biggest fan - didn't use to be that way - but her ego grows bigger every year. She should have used the money to help the homeless she saw as her limo passed by trying to get to the event...

But what about all the free publicity she is providing to the city at no tax payer expense? She is showing the city to tens of millions of her viewers around the world & that's an invaluable boost to tourism. Why do you think the mayor let her do it? Because he's smart enough to know that a small inconveniance is a small price to pay when you have a private citizen who is willing to spend a fortune of private money promoting the city at no tax payer expense.

Sad that there are so many haters, and jelous people in the world, i admire her, she made what she has and she doesn't have to give any of it away, she has a great heart, no doubt she is not perfect, I have learned a lot from some of her shows, she does a great service for women. I am sure that she has brought a lot of tourism to chicago which has subsequently brought money and business to chicgo and i think she wants to be known as a phylanthropist and tries to be a service to americans. There are lots of cities that close streets to have block parties and they don't have oprah to do that. People just hate her because they can't seem to find their way to do what she has done. WAKE UP AMERICA!! Take responsibility for yourselves and your future. And try to get rid of that jelous spirit.

Having been a retailer on the Mag Mile, I can tell you that any inconvenience suffered over the two day (Monday morning to Wednesday morning) shut down will be MORE than made up for by the publicity and the throngs of people - 90,000+ by all of the local estimates - fanning out all over the area right after the taping had concluded.

While all of the retailers will be affected financially in a positive way, I hope that the souvenir stores and eateries had the sense to double up on their staffing tonight. They're gonna get slammed.

Note:
To those hoping Oprah will weigh-in on the health care debate:
Bet on it happening within the first 2 weeks of her new season.

Oprah just weighed in on the president's school speech controversy. She thought the controversy was ridiculous:
