BAGHDAD — Four U.S. soldiers were killed by roadside bombs Tuesday, the deadliest day for American forces in Iraq since combat troops pulled back from urban areas more than two months ago.

The separate attacks in Baghdad and in northern Iraq showed the dangers still facing U.S. troops as they drastically scale back their presence and prepare for a full withdrawal by the end of 2011.

The monthly U.S. death toll has declined sharply this year, falling into single digits for the first time, with American troops shifting to a mainly support and training role in line with a security pact that took effect on Jan. 1. August saw the lowest monthly toll since the war began in 2003, with seven U.S. deaths.

But attacks have persisted since American troops withdrew from population centers on June 30 – as required under the security deal – and Iraqi forces have borne the brunt. Bombings and shootings killed at least 10 Iraqis on Tuesday. The attacks have heightened concerns about Iraqi forces' ability to protect the people and raised fears of resurgent violence ahead of January's parliamentary elections.

One roadside bomb struck a patrol in southern Baghdad, killing one American soldier. A short time later, another bomb targeting a patrol in northern Iraq killed three U.S. soldiers, the military said.

With the deaths, six U.S. troops have been killed this month. It was the deadliest day for U.S. forces since June 29, when four soldiers were killed by a roadside bomb in Baghdad. In all, at least 4,343 U.S. service members have died since the war started in March 2003, according to an Associated Press count.

An Iraqi military spokesman in Baghdad acknowledged the need to improve Iraq's U.S.-trained security forces at a news conference on Tuesday as political fallout continued following devastating Aug. 19 suicide truck bombings that targeted government ministry buildings.

Maj. Gen. Qassim al-Moussawi said 29 police and army officers responsible for security in the areas of the hardest-hit foreign and finance ministries had been arrested and charged with negligence.

"Absolutely, what has been achieved so far in the intelligence and security efforts is below expectations. There is a review to all security plans with the supervision of the prime minister," he said.

Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki has blamed loyalists of ousted leader Saddam Hussein based in Syria for organizing and financing the attacks, which killed as many as 101 people.

His demands for the extradition of the main suspects and call for an international tribunal to investigate the attacks have led to a rift with Damascus that has threatened recent moves toward friendlier relations between the two neighbors.

Iraq's presidential council, led by President Jalal Talabani, a Kurd, called on the prime minister to ease the tensions. It said the situation with Syria should be contained "through dialogue and diplomatic channels."

August was the third deadliest month for Iraqis this year, with at least 425 people killed, according to an AP count. Only June with 448 casualties, and April with 451, saw more people killed. So far this month at least 63 Iraqis have been killed.

The deadliest attacks Tuesday occurred in areas surrounding the disputed oil-rich city of Kirkuk, 180 miles (290 kilometers) north of Baghdad.

A roadside bomb killed the head of an Iraqi anti-terrorism police unit and four of his bodyguards in Armili, a mainly Shiite Turkomen town of about 26,000 south of Kirkuk, police Brig. Gen. Sarhat Qader said.

Armed relatives of those killed went looking for the assailants, who they believed had come from a nearby Sunni village, setting off a gunbattle. Iraqi army troops intervened and no casualties were reported, but the skirmish illustrated lingering sectarian tensions despite security gains.

Another roadside bomb struck a police patrol at the nearby town of Daqouq, killing two policemen and wounding three others, Kirkuk police said.

Two people also were killed in the northern city of Mosul, one civilian in a roadside bombing and a soldier who was gunned down at a checkpoint, according to Iraqi officials.

In Baghdad, a Health Ministry official escaped an assassination attempt but the roadside bomb against his convoy killed one ministry employee, officials said.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity as they were not authorized to release information.

some of you people need to have some freaking respect, if it wasnt for us out there fighting for our country you wouldnt be sleeping under that nice warm blanket at night. Not all of us are just out there to "Get Some" you have mothers, brothers, sisters, daughters, out there fighting to keep our families and our country safe, and if we didnt do it who would stand up? Certanly not those of you who get on here to say you do not care about our soldiers. I dont think you honestly know how it feels when these people fall next to you, our second family, so before you come here criticizing those who fight for your very freedom, maybe you should re evaluate the actual reason your country has freedom....because of us!!!

We already got a start on revising history on this war by overlooking any stories of valor, and magnifying any findings of Americans behaving badly. And the almost brilliant move on putting our returning Veterans on the Home Land Security watch list.

We better pull out now before all the hatred we are building around the world comes reigning down on us. Those crazy conservatives who preach peace through strength are obviously wrong. The fact we have not had another attack on US soil has nothing to do with that thinking. More crazy talk like we will stand down when they stand up, and can defend themselves. We did not make certain that the Vietnamese military could stand up when we pulled out of Vietnam. Congress wouldn’t even provide the funding for the Vietnam military to re supply. Why chase a bad investment with any more good money? It was only millions of Asians who got slaughtered in the killing fields. And millions more who became refugees some of who made make shift boats and drowned at see. The lucky ones made it to America; I work with three of the offspring of the lucky ones. What do you think they have to say about America pulling out without leaving them a way to defend themselves? We can divert attention from what really happened in Vietnam by producing scores of stories and movies how the uniformed Americans are drug crazed monsters. We control the class rooms, text books, and Hollywood. No one will ever find out we were on the wrong side of history in Vietnam. We can certainly do the same thing again when we pull out early in the Middle East.

I hope I never take for granted the sacrifices, especially the ultimate one, made by our soldiers, no matter how much I hate war.

Suicide Attack On Iraq Tribal Leaders Kills More Than 30 After spending 6 years chasing around Iraq trying to quell violence? Our administration has decided to escalate in Afghanistan. It seems the next move for occupation resistance would be when troops are drawn down in Iraq, violence will escalate. making a withdrawal of more troops questionable or impossible. The draw down in Iraq while escalating in Afghanistan is an invitation to keep us in the chase and spend us into catastrophe. Escalation in Afghanistan will quell violence for the short term while resistance fighters move their front to Iraq. It is a trap!!!! No amount of killing will curb this cycle. When we move they move. posted Mar 10, 2009 at 13:09:22

grn1 wrote "keep us the chase and spend us into catastrophe". This administration is already bent on doing this without a war. Chasing failed banks and insurance companies (Bush started it and Senator Obama voted for it). President Obama even took it further with an 800 billion dollar stimulus 3 or 4 it's hard to keep track. And then there is the buy out of the miss managed GM and Chrysler, oh let us not forget the cash for clunkers fiasco. The administrations spin is that if we hadn’t acted it would have been worse. Even with the most basic knowledge of economics tells us that you do not create new tax paying jobs, by sucking the capital out of the private sector.

Why is it that the foreign media will report events, especially concerning events on the ground in theater and the deaths and injuries sustained by our troops, before our esteemed media outlets will. This should be a major wake up call to Americans that our wunderlust and wishful path to "hope and change" is mired in smoke and mirrors. We had better quickly get our heads out of the sand because pretty soon, even with the current current problems which draw people into the service, the troops we rely on to fulfill this collapsing mission will begin to wise up and debunk the patriotism spiel in keeping this operation going.
