NEW YORK (AP) -- A new design for the Brooklyn home of the New Jersey Nets features weathered steel and glass, with a canopy that juts out like the bill of a baseball cap.

Developer Bruce Ratner unveiled the new design for the Barclays Center on Wednesday. It replaces a design from renowned architect Frank Gehry.

The Barclays Center is the centerpiece of the multi-building Atlantic Yards project.

Ratner took Gehry off the $1 billion project in June, citing cost concerns. He was replaced by the firm Ellerbe Becket. The price tag for the project was taken down to $800 million.

Ratner said SHoP Architects will be joining with Ellerbe Becket on the design.

What a piece of trash!
Both Ratner and that stupid stadium that should be at Floyd Bennett Field and not downtown Brooklyn. It’s a waste of money the eminent domain claiming blight is bogus. This stadium is already ruining my neighborhood. In an effort to be mean spirited and claim their territory despite the opposition residents, they condemned the Carlton Avenue Bridge forcing more traffic onto Flatbush Avenue. I don’t buy into any of that neo-con crap but I do have to say that Acorn helped to sell this false bill of goods to long-term neighborhood residents. Promising “affordable housing” without a single guarantee. I’m sure they will build a few SRO’s but the average middle –class family looking for a home/condo under a half-million can forget it! This stadium has made a mess of Prospect Heights. There is a reason why residents blocked that other stupid Jets stadium on the West-side of Manhattan. Look at ANY neighborhood around a ball-field and it is awful! Just take a look at the beloved NY Yankees Bronx neighborhood, it’s depressing to say the least.

Brooklyn is a city onto its own and was developed as such up until efforts for consolidation began late in the 19th century. Fact is the majority of Brooklynites do not live in downtown. Many of the skyscraping condos remain unfilled. The bulk of the population lives south and east of prospect park. I live about a mile away in Victorian Flatbush and i do fear the crush of traffic, but these people must come to a realization. Eminent domain has taken away much from all the other communties in Brooklyn. These people feel entitled because they live in brownstones and drink coffee priced higher than starbucks. The real estate value has skyrocketed through the roof because of Ratner's speculation, and in turn has kept the values of their homes steady in this down market. Be happy if they want to give you money. As for original intent lets be realistic. Those communities to be affected were initially built as satellites to Hezekiah Pierrepont's Brooklyn Heights community; which was intended to be a quaint yet ultra affluent commuter subway on the shore. Considering that Magic Johnson owns the current tallest building in the neighborhood it is obvious that has gone through the roof so sell your brownstone and get on with your life.

Interesting to me that the NY Jets and the NY Giants play in New Jersey, while the New Jersey Nets will have a home in Brooklyn, NY...

How many times do we (Brooklyn residents) need to say it? We don't want an arena in Brooklyn. There is a brand new Prudential center in NJ already! We are sick of Ratner's lies about jobs and costs. Any jobs building the arena would be temporary and gone after it opens. Which housing do you think Ratner will build first? Luxury apartments or low-income housing? Obviously the luxury apartments come first and then we will find out they ran out of money and cannot build any of the low-income housing. Plus how many residents of Prospect Heights, Clinton Hill, Fort Greene, Bed-Stuy, Crown Heights, etc. will actually be able to afford going to any games/events? There is eminent domain abuse on/around the proposed site to say nothing about the traffic nightmare the arena will create for residents. Again, how many times and how boisterous do people need to be before Ratner, the mayor, and the city get it?

The Nets are a cursed franchise. They should stay in Jersey till the curse is removed. Having sold Dr. J to Philly, necessitated the Jersey punishment and the curse is not lifted.
Besides, the traffic movement in the depiction is totally and completely fictional.

Finally a design that works for Brooklyn and 50 years after the theft by LA of the Dodgers, Brooklyn will have itself a home for a sports team. O'Malley will be smiling tonight. Thank you recession for creating the perfect strom to replace the prior designs with a local design that fits the streetscape of NY.

Robert Moses was an evil man, but I have to agree with him on shutting down O’Malley. If he didn’t, I would be able to enjoy my Prospect Heights neighborhood today! Yeah, let’s celebrate that a stadium ( that can be build elsewhere) will wipe out residents. I’d bet you would have a different sentiment if it was built on your block. I know it need to go somewhere if the fans want it, but why not Floyd Bennett Field, if you have to have it?
Keep in mind I pay very good money to live in my neighborhood. The middle-class cannot afford to live here. If you make under 100k, you will not be able to live in anywhere around this arena even if you want to. If you do, the price per square foot will be similar to Hong Kong in order to live in a shoe box. Certainly few of the police officers from the 76th Precinct will be able to afford to live in the neighborhood. All for a sports stadium that will not decrease our taxes, provide real jobs? What do we want it for, bragging rights on the back cover of the Daily News? I think it’s selfish and childish.
