The Guardian:

The rise of the mobile phone has left the streets of Madrid littered with increasingly redundant telephone booths. But these underused installations are now set to play a key role in Spain's electric car revolution under government plans to make them part of a network of electric charging stations for vehicles.

Reminds me of Paris project http://bit.ly/17zP5q as recently posted.

While the Japanese and the Chinese are currently leading in development and production of e-cars, in Germany, e.g., there are only a few prototypes on the road. Large scale manufacturing is prospected only from 2020 (or so) onward.

That's just plain smart!

I think its great to do this, though not the right solution. Hydrogen cars are the way to go. They drive further and don't take 9 hours to charge. Don't get me wrong I think electric is a great way to go but as it is now driving for one hour on a 9 hour charge just does not seem to be effective as far as trasnportation.

Plus I wish we had better mass transit in the States.

Amazing!
Spain is a very progressive country. Way ahead of the U.S.
They also provide free healthcare for all of their citizens.

A friend of mine pays $50 in maintenance per month on his apartment, as opposed to the $900+ that I used to pay on my maintenance. The U.S. is a place for people to get ripped off, legally of course.

It's really depressing to see how other countries are taking off with alternative energy and electric vehicles, while we stagnate. The Chinese government is making a huge investment in new technology, while we continue bashing socialism and gloating over the fact that we don't need no stinkin' government in this country.

I thought it was particularly poignant last night when Obama talked about America's inherent distrust of government. It's almost as if he were apologizing for involving government in health care reform.

Good idea as a start, but they better have a much longer range plan if they want to require electric vehicles in the city. I can't imagine that these phone booths and the 191 light post points are even close to enough to supply future demand. I also wonder how all of this electricity is going to be generated and paid for. If it continues to be paid by the government, that will be a hefty tax to levy on everyone, if they use the system or not. If the government decides to change people, that in itself could be greatly abused. If the plan is to charge people, this is a place where a little bit of corporate competition could keep prices reasonable.

Given the state of budget cuts for municipalities in the the US, this could generate a lot of money for them if old telephone booths became charging stations.

Spain is also the world leader in solar thermal energy.

In many American cities, local governments have been replacing parking meters with those really annoying payment kiosks (one or two per block) to save on meter maids. But in Canada, they're adding electric charge points to their parking meters.

We could learn a thing of two from how Spain is reusing obsolete Technology to help New innovations take off!
