Having drugs be illegal is the reason we have such a black market. Organized crime leaders seek to keep people addicted.
If we were to finally interrupt that cycle, like they have successfully done in say, Portugal, we could finally start to see a reduction in the use and addiction issues, including the G I N O R M O U S sucking away of our common treasury.

In case people haven't noticed, making drugs illegal doesn't work. Yes, overuse of practically any substance is harmful, but criminalizing the use of a drug simply has never worked to stem it's use. All it does is drain money from education and health programs, and foster the rise of organized crime.

As it is now, the drug cartels determine drug purity and price, and all the proceeds from sales are untaxed, going into the pockets of the gangsters, crooked cops and politicians who feed off the misery that drug laws create.

If abuse of any drug is a problem, then the patient needs compassion and care, not incarceration.

Incaseration of substance abusers is not justice. Their rightfull place is the rehab and treatment centers.
Drugs(alcohol included) can have mind numbing control over peoples' lives and when they are under the control by a substance, they are innocent of so called crimes which their behavior results in.

Michael has completed the metamorphosis into his dad. They're so similar now. Michael had the benefit of nepotism as does his son now. I completely respect Kirk because he came from poverty and fought his way to the top.

I realize Jr Douglas has bigger problems, but he really needs a more current hair cut. Y'know something from the last two decades? He should never wear Michael Douglas' 'Streets of San Francisco' slim.eball look.

For those of you who continue to insist that we legalize crystal meth, the drug he was selling, take a look at the faces of meth. And see my post one page over.

But it is okay for physicians to prescribe meth to little kids to help them sit still and concentrate in school? Okay for our soldiers to be given meth to keep them awake?

Abusing alcohol causes problems, just as bad as meth, and you can buy it anywhere.

I am not advocating meth use, just pointing out some facts.

There are a lot of people doing life in prison in California and other States for stealing something as small as a slice of PIZZA because of the "Three Strikes Law"!

Get off Michael Douglas' son's back! Some people really like to get cranky on that stuff. It really ought to be legal. He obviously wasn't doing it for greed when he's got enough dough. He made a life-style choice and now he's a drug-policy dissident.

I'll put my name up in defense of any drug trafficker who did no physical violence and merely facilitated trade in illicit substances. Young Mr. Douglas' physical safety better be guaranteed because this is a case many are observing.

I have no sense of humor at all about the way drug policies have been applied to destroy people and I won't watch it happen to anybody without speaking advocacy on their behalf.

Keep in mind the purer crystal meth is not the kind that is necessarily filled with corrosive processing chemicals like the kind made in an Oklahoma meth lab. People snort this stuff, and it probably doesn't cause the meth-mouth of the corrosive chemicals of the kind people smoke.

Anyway, it's not my cup of tea and I've never had any, but nevertheless, I hate to see a young man's life destroyed over a bag of chemicals that people willingly buy and consume.

Yeah, so go ahead and control distribution of bulk quantities. I don't use that stuff.

I'm just saying the drug policy has been a complete failure so far.

So young Mr. Douglas made a huge error in judgment. As I said on behalf of Bernie Madoff, his safety is the responsibility of those who have taken him into custody.

He is no longer able to move this stuff around, and his trial is pending. My point is that his physical security is paramount because we all know how twisted prisons are being run.

Houses of pain. Mockery of the misery inside. That's not ok. I'm just saying, people have to stopped being trashed in America's barbaric, (for-profit "correctional facilities" (horribly Orwellian)) prison because of some non-violent crime.

Trust me. Any sort of meth use will tear up your teeth if you use enough for long enough. Besides, other than the prescription methamphetamine capsules supplied to narcoleptics and those with very severe ADHD, it's all sloppily-labbed, impure, bathtub chemist sh.-te. There's often violence associated with heavy use, along with sometimes permanent changes in cognition and mental health. The completely whacked-out hippy "acid casualties" one used to see on Haight St. were actually more likely to have been done in by speed than LSD. I don't know that life sentences are the right solution, but just letting anyone who wants to, do as much crank as they feel like using is probably not the correct approach, either.

I don't mess with it. I agree with you as well. I'm just trying to put in a word for the security of this young man as I did on behalf of Farrah Fawcett's son who had much less of a problem in terms of quantity.

If these guys can be afforded a chance to survive and redeem themselves, maybe the whole corporate prison-industrial complex can be changed from being a soylent green factory to being rehabilitative of guys who are in prison for drug related offenses.

Alcohol. It is by far the hardest drug, and it is legal.

""He handles everything with honesty and with grace. "

I have to admit - and I'm not usually one to be a fame sychophant - I have been very impressed with the way that Douglas has dealt with this. Unlike most of the rich and famous, he hasn't tried to use his wealth and fame to get his son off the hook, he hasn't seemed to call in favours to officials or judges, he hasn't adopted the ludicrous (but sadly in this world all too often listened to) position that because he's in movies it is outrageous that his son has to obey the law and has been arrested.

A rare thing among his peers. I have to commend him for that. Paris Hilton's mother - for one - could take lessons.

Remember at first he was able to get his son permission to stay
at his mansion instead of jail.
Sounds like string pulling to me ....... after which
his son screwed up, AGAIN, with his girlfriend.

There wasn't a chance for him to pull strings for his son after that.
