Thompson Stumbles Against Tony Avella In New York Mayoral Debate

It was a perfunctory, even predictable debate question: What would be your first act as mayor?

But with the cameras rolling on Wednesday night, William C. Thompson Jr., New York City's comptroller, seemed flummoxed, pausing for a painful six seconds, fumbling through a couple of false starts, then settling on a boilerplate answer: fire all of Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg's commissioners.
