A brand of software invented to make sure singers hit the right notes in the recording studio, Auto-Tune has been re-purposed by many acts to transform their voices into a robotic warble. The software was launched as an iPhone app ("I am T-Pain) by the software's major champion, rapper T-Pain, but hip-hop heavyweight Jay-Z has different ideas. In his new song "D.O.A. (Death of Auto-Tune), Jay-Z raps, "I know we facing a recession but the music y'all making gonna make it the Great Depression." The song has become a rallying cry among music fans dismayed over Auto-Tune's spread.
