Christian Siriano

NEW YORK — Designers from "Project Runway" have come and gone – sadly, mostly gone. But Christian Siriano has shown he plans to stay.

Siriano's spring 2010 collection shown Saturday was his third at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week following his stint on the reality show, and in that time he's made his way to the windows of Saks Fifth Avenue and to the shoe aisles of Payless.

The collection was a lush take on Mediterranean travel, concluding with three intricate ball gowns that elicited spontaneous applause from a crowd that included actresses Mena Suvari and Tori Spelling and model Alessandra Ambrosio. A satin-faced organza strapless gown in blush, elegantly draped and with a beaded bodice, cried out for a red carpet.

"I feel like a proud dad," said Tim Gunn, the "Project Runway" mentor. He said he knew Siriano would be a standout from the competition, and thinks he's evolved into something more: "I believe he's this generation's Marc Jacobs. I do."

Some of Siriano's most striking pieces were made from a fabric print created using an aerial photograph of the Italian coast line – "flipped, modified, repeated and saturated with Volcanic and Oceanic colors," as Siriano described in his notes. The result was a richly intricate pattern that looked almost animalistic rendered in reds and orange and like a deep ocean cartography in blues.

Siriano is a natural showman, so wearability seems beside the point. But his weakest moments came when he strived for it – as in a fitted khaki funnel neck dress with blue piping – and when he totally ignored it, as in an ocean print body suit that was unflattering on the model, who looked famished even by model standards.

But he showed a capacity to wow with some of his tamer pieces in shades of blush, nude and khaki – there was elegant draping, delicate pleating and gathered flounces at the shoulders and hips, two body parts getting a lot of attention at Fashion Week.

Also meant to be wearable: the sky-high shoes for his third Payless line with a curved, pointed heel and sometimes upturned toe. Just don't try walking too far. It wouldn't be fierce.

Nina Garcia, a "Project Runway" judge and fashion director of Marie Claire, said she agreed with Gunn's assessment of the designer, calling Siriano "pretty amazing."

"Go to the Saks Fifth Avenue third floor and you'll see him among all the big designers. So clearly it's not just us who think that way but I think also the retailers," she said. "Christian had just fearlessness about him, he just kept pushing the envelope. At the end of the day you have to have that to make it."

I'm happy for Christian that he is doing well. He's talented and works hard.

Well where are the pictures?! I love Christian!

He hasn't gone up to bat enough to have a reliable average- he is just a kid, cut him some slack. He is involved in an industry that is very fickle. I would expect his designs to reflect his personality, one of not being a wall flower. Staying in business and not being the flavor of the month is a challenge in the trade, he does appear to have talent, it is the staying power that is the challenge.

I hope his dreams come true.

Fierce! But honestly I liked that runner ups line better than Chris. But sine the show his designs have matured. I love watching people chase and conquer their dreams and ambitions. Good for you.

Blush, nude and khaki--all blah shades guaranteed to wash out any complexion.

Some of his designs are very pretty, very wearable, but the colors are so deadly boring. He will be interesting to watch as he matures, I think.

Beautiful gown. I Love Christian's work. I think he's a very exciting new talent.

His stuff gets more wearable - except those god-awful ugly, accident waiting to happen shoes. I don't think he'll ever be mass-market, but who knows? He's just getting started and he certainly knows his stuff.

Aerial views of the Italan coastline and then adpated to fabric for a design is brilliant. Seranno tends to over-the-top though and it's good to see he's learned to hold back. He is a sensational designer and the best out of all the Project Runways series.

Actually, Tim Gunn has said in a few interviews that he has not had a date or a romantic relationship in decades. He has no time to, because of the amount of time he works.

CS will be around until he's replaced by this season's winner or next.as a designer unless he expands his vision to include more wearable creations

Judging from the designers this season none of them have a chance, with the exception of older guy with the dregs.

Usually at events like NYFW, what we see on the catwalk is the extreme of a design.

Sometimes the designers will "design down" a design for clients.

What the catwalk shows is the direstion fashion may take in the next couple of years. Remember the scene in The Devil Wears Prada, where Streep discusses a particular color in blue, and that it had been featured in a designer's runway show 2 years ago but that, like most runway designs, it takes a couple of years for it to filter down to boutiques and department stores, and by that time it will have been modified so that it is more wearer-friendly.

Christian's line is great but it's unwearable. He only designs for Victoria Beckham. I know only two people that size and they can't afford to wear designer clothes. He needs to let out the hips a bit and picture women who are not a size 00, then we can discuss if he's on the level of Marc Jacobs. I know he's adorable Tim but really, quit your gushing.

This is strange comment. All designers use pretty thin models (except for plus-size designers I suppose), but then certain pieces are mass produced in several sizes. The reason is that "fabric tends to hang better" on women with no curves.

I do agree it is unwearable unless you are going to a very high end event. I wouldn't be surprised to see his designs start popping up on red carpets though.

Why is my comment strange. Christian says that Victoria Beckham is his inspiration. His line is couture and caters to the double/triple zero set. His line is gorgeous but it's not ready to wear.

I love Tim Gunn, but I completely disagree with the idea of Christian Siriano as the next Marc Jacobs. First of all Jacobs came to fame not only on talent but on the strength of his popularity with New York's young social set, then Hollywood and the public followed. Who is Siriano's audience? Who is he designing for? Certainly not the same youthful crowd because this collection, while informed by cerebral inspiration (an aerial photograph of the Italian coastline is truly original), speaks to a more mature, elegant woman. And there's nothing wrong with that, but Marc Jacobs it ain't. There definitely were some beautiful pieces in Siriano's collection, but there were also some huge misses, like the last gown: that burgundy print monstrosity. If he keeps working, he's going to get better and better, but it's a stretch to compare him to Marc Jacobs at this point.

"Tweetie"

You can not be serious. Your idea of a great designer is his or her 'popularity' with a certain crowd? And by they way, 'young social set' to 'hollywood' and the 'public' pretty much covered everybody. The comparison is of their creativity and non-cpnventional approach to design and their understanding of fashion. Siriano may not be as established as Marc Jacobs right now, but he's well on his way.

By the way, thanks for creating a brand new account to chime in on this topic. *wink* ;)

Every designer no matter how great has their share of hits and misses. It's not popularity with a social set that makes for a great designer either but training and talent and Seranno has both. He studied in London and has that euro edge in his designs that always seems far ahead of anything coming out of the U.S. As to his designing for mostly mature elegant women, look again at these coastal inspired designs and the models who wear them. Not exactly mature in the least. In fact, a mature woomen though and a younger woman can both look sensational in them.

Agreed. I think it's a bit premature.

The fact that Christian would feature now in two NYFW shows those nearly Dr.-Seuss-esque hats right there shouts "he needs more time."

I thought CS was a total twit on the show, and I didn't want him to win at all. But I admit, that blue dress is pretty cool.

All that baloney "fierce" talk made my skin crawl but that blue gown is "fabulous."

ITA. The "fierce" thing was obviously trying to work the viewers. The fact that other designers later started using the "fierce" (even saying it like CS) was unbelieable.

I have to respectfully disagree. He would say something egocentric, then he would say something self deprecating. It was very funny to watch and totally enduring (for me anyway). I can't pull up everything he said, but if he were a twit, most viewers would have turn him and the show off. But each week, we would tune in to see what he and the other designers would produce. That was a strong, final 3, as was the year before.

Yes, he was a twit. But he's also a genius. I guess sometimes we have to put up with twittishness for the sake of art.
