Dowd On Wilson: "Some People Just Can't Believe A Black Man Is President And Will Never Accept It"

Wilson

New York Times:

I tended to agree with some Obama advisers that Democratic presidents typically have provoked a frothing response from paranoids -- from Father Coughlin against F.D.R. to Joe McCarthy against Truman to the John Birchers against J.F.K. and the vast right-wing conspiracy against Bill Clinton.

But Wilson's shocking disrespect for the office of the president -- no Democrat ever shouted "liar" at W. when he was hawking a fake case for war in Iraq -- convinced me: Some people just can't believe a black man is president and will never accept it.

And some people simply cant accept the fact that it's the Presidents core beliefs that I disagree with, not his pigmentation.

I cannot accept a "Post Turtle" as president (Patrick Dorinson, the Cowboy Libertarian August 28 column in Fox News), a greenhorn so wet behind the ears he surrounds himself with Chicaco ward flunkies and Havana U. drop-outs as czars to school him in post racial neo-octegenarian deconstructionist didactic disestablishmentarianism, which explains his stimulus, energy and health care bills.

Maybe "Post Turtle" is racist, I must consult Mohamed Ali, my distant Irish relative.

totally agree with Ms Dowd, also remember the President's back to school speech?
G.H. W. Bush told the kids to write him a letter telling him what they could do to help him.
People were never allowed to opt out of that speech.
What is the difference between the 2 Presidents. number one answer, color of their skin?

It's easy enough for the opposition, be it Republicans, conservatives, libertarians to claim that we always throw the race card in, they are just using reverse psychology.
Their base just cannot accept that the president is not "one of them"
stop pretending, we see through your prejuidice.

Libertarians have co-opted the racist faction, people who don't even have the intellectual capacity to understand the political issues that they are protesting. These people are being manipulated by their own prejudice into protesting measures that would improve America considerably.

Maureen Dowd, Kudos for telling the truth. Many of the people carrying the ugly, offensive signs could not care less about policy. It is as if Obama's election were a personal affront to them. What could it be if not racism? The President has certainly been more than gracious to everyone. He clearly is brilliant. What else could they want to approve of him except a change in the color of his skin?

A few hundred years ago the "average Joe " on the street thought the world was flat.

Even after it was proven to be untrue they refused to believe otherwise.

When the worlds population thought and acted like the world was flat..............it wasn't

Most folks today know about the human genome project, funded by the federal government:

Completed in 2003, the Human Genome Project (HGP) was a 13-year project coordinated by the U.S. Department of Energy and the National Institutes of Health. During the early years of the HGP, the Wellcome Trust (U.K.) became a major partner; additional contributions came from Japan, France, Germany, China, and others.

AND that we all originate from south east Africa.

This National Geographic project, The Genographic Project, has been all over the radio and television airwaves, news papers and magazines since April, 2005.

https://genographic.nationalgeographic.com/genographic/lan/en/index.html

The same people that reject this science, continue to reject evolution and think that the world was created in 6 days.

Rejecting knowledge and choosing ignorance do not change facts.

These same people did not want Sotomayor as a justice because they thought she was of color and assumed to be Mexican.

It would not matter what South American country or Island nation she came from, she had color.

Americans would be reacting this way if their president had anything more than a John Bonehead tan.

It IS about every color but white.

I remember the anti Bush protests... dissenters arrested for wearing antiBush T shirts, protests being relegated to parking lots miles from events, commentators calling them "Traitors" and "treasonous" and calling for "re-education camps", being called "Anti American" for questioning the war and the President...

at least these weirdos can protest in public.

I wonder what would have happened if anyone would have shown up with a gun to an event during the Bush years?

In any case, the GOP have been co-opted by the extremists that they courted. Now they are so shrill and, I don't think conservative is the right word more like - lame. They can't separate themselves from the extremists.

The ignorance and paranoia is not surprising. Americans don't rank very high globally when it comes to education... and these people are anti-Intellectual - thus the aversion to fact checking. They are frightened and stupid which is a dangerous combination. It leads to thinking that moral and ethical values are only important during peace time. It also leads to more extremists, and more dangerous extremists.

Realistically, we do have illegal immigrants here.

Mostly they do work that we don't want to do.

They are human. They do get sick; and they do get hurt just like everyone else.

So what are we going to do Mr. Wilson? Let them die?

No. We're the United States, we can do better than that. We'll treat them and provide them with well-care as necessary. And if they cannot afford it, they'll get what they need for free,,,,,,,,, on us.

Why?

Because we're the United States.

If we can afford to give away billions in foreign aid, then we can afford to pay for foreigners' care when they are over here doing our spit work.

"...But, fair or not, what I heard was an unspoken word in the air: You lie, boy! "

So, Maureen Dowd has written a whole article against Joe Wilson and the right because of what he DIDN'T say? Just what she THINKS he meant?

Wow...I guess when you don't have anything left to stand on, the race card is your best bet. Seems to be the standard defense for this administration.

Yes, there are racists in this country. No, the majority of conservatives are not racists. Yes, the left wants to believe that most conservatives are racists because then they can justify not debating them on facts. They can just claim that they don't talk to racists...that is one sure way to come to an understanding in this country...don't talk.

Looks like the left is doing their fair share to split the country down the middle...way to go, Maureen!

Excuse me? Apparently you did not read the entire article.

Here, gnaw on this...

"The congressman, we learned, belonged to the Sons of Confederate Veterans, led a 2000 campaign to keep the Confederate flag waving above South Carolinaโ€™s state Capitol and denounced as a โ€œsmearโ€ the true claim of a black woman that she was the daughter of Strom Thurmond, the โ€™48 segregationist candidate for president. Wilson clearly did not like being lectured and even rebuked by the brainy black president presiding over the majestic chamber."

Conclusion: Wilson is a racist SOB

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 03:54 PM on 09/14/2009

I know for a fact that not all conservatives are as bad as they have appeared to be of late, but like you, only the delusional seem to be speaking out these days. You harbor disdain for higher thinking and label it too "theoretical", and simply ignore facts like those referenced by "Georgiapundit". The left doesn't want to debate the facts??? Are you kidding me??? Conservatives have covered the entire life-cycle with baseless lies...from cradle to grave as they say, or shall I say "Birthers" to "Deathers". And your party insists on peddling the notion that the health care reform bill (intentionally) extends coverage to illegals. The only facts related to these assertions are from those defending against them.

You say, "...the race card is your best bet. Seems to be the standard defense for this administration." The fact is, this administration has been slow to point out even the most overt racist behavior, by instead making comments like, "โ€ฆDemocratic presidents typically have provoked a frothing response from paranoidsโ€ฆ". You are the standard for Republicans who speak out today.

Actually...I am not a Republican. That party left me. I am not a birther, a "deather" or a racist. President Obama won the election fair and square. I accept that. I respect him for holding his tongue when he could be lashing out like Joe Wilson.

But to take the ignorant on our side (i.e. the racists, birthers, deathers, etc) and try to make them the face of our side is misleading and ignorant in itself.
When every statement contradicting the president is turned into a racist comment, when those that oppose him are painted to be racists for having a different viewpoint...it is wrong and cheapens the real racism because it is being lumped in with all of the other viewpoints. It is being used as an excuse and that is too bad because there IS real racism that is out there. To discuss things with the opposition will make progress...to ignore them because they "must be " racists is the easy way out...but it doesn't get us anywhere except where we are today. That was my point...not to applaud Mr. Wilson, who was wrong to do what he did as are all of those that did the same to the previous president.

I've made this comment before, and now it seems that MoDo is saying much the same thing: what we are witnessing is the former majority writhing in agony at their own approaching minority status. White America is gone, or it soon will be, and the supreme emblem of this encroaching reality is a black man in the white house. For a large segment of the population, raised on racism and working overtime to try to conceal it in a society which increasingly frowns upon such hatred, their feelings about a black president are simply burning too hot to tamp down. They can't get away with emblazoning their Obama charicatures with "The N Word," but they can certainly flirt with overt racism by cloaking it in protests of "socialism" or "communism" or "fascism" (three distinct political ideologies which have become, for the fringe right, all identical and equally suitable euphemisms for "The N Word").

What these people hate is the coming of a brown America, and their racism is blatantly obvious to anyone who's paying attention. What worries me is that whether Obama lasts four years or eight in the presidency, the demographic change coming to this nation will not be altered one way or the other. When these lunatics understand that, Obama or no Obama, whites are headed for minority status, I don't know what they might do. They're panicked now, and I imagine they will only become moreso in coming years.

When I was a child, I had a friend. The African-American son of the neighbors who lived houses down from us. He went to my school...in fact he was in my class, so we were together all day every day.

When I passed to the third grade, my reward was to go see Mary Poppins. This was the early sixties in a large Midwestern city, and I wanted to take my friend. I would'nt shut up about it. I bothered my parents and his.

Part ll

Finally...and I'll never forget it...my mother took me aside in the sitting room off her bedroom when the house was quiet. She put her hand on my little face and with sad eyes, told me that my friend could'nt go with me. She did'nt explain why, but I knew in an instant. I remember it as the moment I realized that although the grownups said that everyone was equal in society...it was a lie.

I saw Mary Poppins that day, but from then to now, evertytime I'm asked to go to the movies, I decline. I simply cannot walk into a movie theater without having my stomach turn over.

I say all that to say this.

If we as whites are headed for a minority status, then good. We've made a hash of civilizarion, and there are prople of color on this earth whose ancestors were ruling great societies when such as we were dropping out of trees, hunting with sharp sticks, and discovering fire.

White people need to get the h3// over it. Then we need to apologize on our knees and make repair for out runiation of civilizatio

Great story, Kid. Yeah, our parents and their parents did a job on us, and a lot of parents continue to do so.

When I was in elementary school in the late 60's in the San Francisco area, my three best friends were Chinese, Japanese and Orthodox Jewish respectively. Man, I loved going over to their houses to play, because I always learned something (and usually got something interesting to eat in the bargain). But I think that my experiences were atypical for that time. I do know that my mother was a bit of a rebel in her high school days, when she invited the only African-American young man in the school to take the desk next to hers. Weird, because as she grew older she clearly became resentful and fearful of people of color.

America will never be a melting pot, but it's becoming an incredibly interesting salad bowl! And now it's time for the iceberg lettuce to make way for the rest of the veggies!
