What's Your Reaction?

NEW YORK (AP) - Two employees of the advocacy group ACORN are shown on a hidden-camera video released Monday, apparently advising a couple posing as a prostitute and her pimp to lie about her profession and launder her earnings.

The video was the latest in a series that has already led to the firing of four ACORN employees in Baltimore and Washington, D.C. It was created by James O'Keefe and Hannah Giles and posted on BigGovernment.com, where O'Keefe identifies himself as an activist filmmaker.

ACORN spokesman Scott Levenson blasted the video shot at the organization's Brooklyn office, saying the group believes the voices of the couple were dubbed over to alter the conversation and make the interaction appear more objectionable than it may have been.

The two employees featured in the video have been suspended while ACORN works to reconstruct the exchange that was caught on film, Levenson said.

On the video, O'Keefe and Giles enter the ACORN office, and O'Keefe can be heard explaining "we have a unique life situation" and asking if they qualify for housing help.

In a meeting with an ACORN housing coordinator and office administrator, both women apparently urge the pair to lie about their ill-gotten gains, with the administrator saying "Honesty is not going to get the house. That's why you've probably been denied."

"Don't say you're a prostitute thing or whatever. ... You have to sit back and think and find another name for it," says the housing coordinator, who later urges Giles to put her cash in a tin and bury it in the backyard.

The undeclared cash could be given to an uninvolved friend who could then give the funds as a gift to O'Keefe, presumably to pay for the house, the housing coordinator tells the couple.

The housing coordinator at one point seems confused about the legality of the situation, asking, "Is prostitution legalized in New York state?"

She later seems to take a concerned interest in Giles, telling her: "You have to start thinking, and when you're in this business you have to think fast."

"I can't tell you don't do it, because you won't listen to me. ... If you're going to do it, do it well, and start thinking for yourself ... and save for a rainy day."

According to Levenson, ACORN sent a letter to Fox News President Roger Ailes, stating that the videotape was deceptive and had been dubbed over, and asking the network to stop showing the videos.

Fox News spokeswoman Dana Klinghoffer said the tapes were vetted editorially before they were aired.

Breitbart.com, which owns BigGovernment.com, did not immediately respond to a call and e-mails seeking comment.

When ACORN pleads guilty to defrauding taxpayers or consumers of billions of dollars - as many companies have done - call me. This stuff is child's play.

We love when Republicans get brought down for wrong-doings, we should be honest and support the pursuit of justice EVEN when it means Democrats get brought down for criminal activities.
Just because our President is trying desperately to wash his hands of ACORN's filth does not mean we should drop this.

OK, so we are supposed to believe that a former lawyer for ACORN and now President of the U.S. didn't know that Acorn gets billions of $$$ from the feds. Obama should be ashamed of himself for sayint this.

Here's what I see:

Carefully edited video, with a lot of "suggested" and "inferred" context, that has little or no direct relevance to the words coming out of the woman's mouth.

If you completely eliminate all of the suggestions of context (buying a house for prostitution, etc.), and watch the edits CAREFULLY, you'll see a pattern: the context is "setup" by his words, then an *edit*, then her answer... apparent to me, unrelated to the suggested context.

Over and over.

In fact, much of the advice I heard was wise, and "human"...... acknowledging that she's a 'prostitute', understanding it, not "judging" it...

I also think they were trying to be "helpfully creative", and saying 'well, good luck!", but reminding them over and over that what they were doing was illegal, and that there might be 'workarounds', but again. I didn't see them 'facilitating a safe house for child prostitution'.......

Not once you look more carefully at the editing: "context suggestion *edit* answer..."

It's a sham. Nothing these women actually said, with the suggested context removed, was inappropriate....... nothing.

It appears ACORN is an acronym for a bad seed.

I am still trying to find the "scandal" part of this scandal.

taxpayer dollars. tax fraud. tax evasion. sex slavery. child prostitution. illigal immigration. yeah, i can see why you are having trouble.

I feel like I took the pill that led me down the rabbit hole. Maybe we should remain oblivious to what the matrix really is. Im with Jon Stewart on this- Acorn isnt the scandal, the media not covering this is. I feel like I just found out that someone I love did something really bad. Major news networks not covering something so salacious? The implications run deep. I cant help but look back and wonder how much has been kept from us- or reported with an angle. Thank the divine for the blogosphere.

Even if this is trumped up and videos are actually fake, the damage is done. The message has been blasted out on every media outlet. Heck, even the Daily Show picked it up. I truly don't think Acorn can recover from this which is sad because I'm sure they did a lot of good work in these very needy communities.

Silly peasants! Look how they fight over the scraps we so graciously toss to them. Here, let them eat crack, I mean cake!

I'm confused. Sorry for entering the fray late on this one. I took too much of my anti-depression medication. Can someone explain to me the difference in the general term "prostitute" as applied to a street prostitute or a political prostitute.

When the Bernard Madoff tapes hit the waves, why didn't we demand that we cut off all the funding to Wall Street and the Financial Sector. His tapes are merely a variation on a theme expressed over and over again in penthouse offices, corporate boardrooms and 30,000 feet in the air on corporate jets on their way to exotic vacation spots around the world. Unfortunately for the poor, they don't have the means to legitimize their attempts at greed which for most of them are really attempts at survival. Wrong-doing for the purposes of greed seems to be less revolting than wrong-doing for the purposes of survival. I wonder how many street prostitutes enjoy their profession. I can understand how an ACORN worker might understand an act of desperation. The prostitutes don't have much in the way of benefits. If they could only afford a corporate lawyer and corporate accountant to cover their attempt at greed, I mean survival, with a complex layer of paper so no one can find it.

Excellently stated.

I guess we should investigate everyone that Borat (Sacha Baron Cohen) fooled into saying or agreeing with something outrageous as well. Next, conservatives will go to all of the Good Will and Salvation Army locations and see if they can get the recovering alcoholics, former prostitutes, and uneducated low level workers to say something that makes those organizations look bad. Then like these people, they'll only air the "hits," and exclude all of the times they were turned away. This is ridiculous.

Yes, you're exaclty right.

The ACORN worker in San Bernadino pretended to have killed her husband...O'Keefe never called the police to either report it or verify it as a good journalist should do.

He ran to FOX news instead to accuse Ms. Kaelke of murder ....and now may wind up in court for what he has done.

The video they are not showing - Philadelphia ACORN workers boot James O'Keefe & Hannah Giles from their office and call police.

The incident report has been furnished to AP and other news organizations by ACORN administration.

However, the Philly ACORN workers did not call the police to investigate whether the pimp and prostitute were really importing girls from Central America to prostitute them in Philly. ACORN workers called the police because the couple got belligerent.

Oops, that should have said the couple got belligerent after ACORN workers would not help them.

Forget the FOX/GOP demands, the investigation I'd REALLY like to see now is ................ The impact ACORN had on Obama's defeat of Hillary in the primaries. If it is as bad as I expect, the only thing protecting Obama from impeachment would be ................................................ Biden.

Jon Stewart covered this story last night (Tuesday night). His audience was stunned and Stewart was contemptuous that main stream media was not covering it. Fox news is high as a kite over it, over course. If the tapes do turn out to have been dubbed, i wonder if Stewart will take it back?

I doubt they are dubbed; edited, yes.

Tonight, Hannity reveals the FIFTH video, taken in San Diego, in which an ACORN employee advises the undercovers to ship the underage future sex slaves to Tiajuana...so then ACORN can use their contacts to help bring them into the US.

Check Hannity, Fox News, or BigGovernment.com to see the truth for yourself, because, of course...the mainstream media won't cover it.

This story has actually been exposed as fraud and Maryland is in the process of filing entrapment charges against the "reporters."

http://www.newshounds.us/2009/09/16/fox_news_punked_by_acorn.php

"Actually, it’s the perfect exposure of the Republican media complex. First, you have Giles and O’Keefe. Not quite the “independent filmmakers” they are presented as, each is a well-connected conservative activist. O'Keefe is an anti-choice zealot who specializes in using deceptive practices to trick his targets into embarrassing themselves. Giles is the daughter of Townhall.com founder Doug Giles. As Hannah Giles previously revealed on Hannity, she knew nothing about ACORN, other than that she didn’t’ like the organization, before she hatched her plan to dupe them. Breitbart soon proved he had not vetted Kaelke’s claim and didn’t care. Nor did Fox News, as Glenn Beck proved earlier. So do the screen grabs from Foxnews.com and Fox Nation below.

It was Hannity, of all people, who offered a modicum of ethics and independence.

“Did you ever check to see if in fact she (Kaelka) had a husband that was killed?” he asked Giles.

“We’re working on that,” Giles answered evasively. "

I'm surprised this isn't on the front page of HuffPo.

are you really surprised....

I don't think entrapment would fly.... law officials weren't the ones who did the taping.... this is investigative reporting.... Kind of like how 60MIN does it..... go in with hidden cameras than than expose.....

I wonder however, if going back with exposed cameras is part of the requirement for being considered investigative.

The law doesnt apply here because it has to be in a one on one situation, not a group session. Nice try.
